1971 VW Beetle Rebuild

Recommended Posts

unopieceo

Haha nicely spotted and picked I went through my pictures 4 times going "how the f*ck did he know that?" before I saw it. We've got a bmw as well so we're very much repping our German heritage in our choice of vehicles. Yeah the slk is very definetley not in the garage when I'm working on the beetle and it will be on the opposite side of the road when I get to painting this weekend.

EDIT: bonus points for spotting the beamer just noticed it features as well

I can barely believe it but the beetle is now cozy and rust proof under its first layer of primer! my bondoing skills were also better than I thought they'd be and with a little attention to detail and a couple more days work I'll be ready to lay on the top coat! The dream is becoming a reality.

Looks fabulous, man. What sort of color are you going for?

I actually spotted a stripped Beetle just like yours on the back of a truck today, and thought of this thread. It was a fresh yellow. :colgate:

A sort of cornflowery blue color, not an original beetle color but whatevs. Was gonna go for red but when I bought the other beetle I decided that would have to be the red one. After a few days of priming, Sanding and filling small imperfections I'm calling the primer coat finished! Without too much effort I should have the top coat on this weekend

Looks nice, mate! Keep it up! I love the Beetle, and it is very, very popular over here. Too bad people just doesn't take care of the car, and they all look all trashed up nowadays.

Also, for colors: I just freaking love when you do those two-tone paintings, like in this pic:

I'll prolly rebuild a VW Beetle, or a VW Brasilia (common car over here too) in the future, since they're cool cars to have around.

Couldn't help but notice. Did you prime over the suspension/shocks and pedals?

Protect yourself from those ISOs bro!

Yeah I went over most things with the primer I just couldnt be bothered masking up every little thing. The pedals will be fine though Im going to spray them black anyway.

So anyway, today was a very important day, as you can see.

So since I last posted the old engine has gone back in (unrestored, Ill get to redoing that a bit later) Ive rebuilt the steering column, speedo and ignition wiring, the steering wheels gone on and a few other things. Nearly ready to fire this bad boy up again. Also gonna wind the odometer back to 0 with a drill like from matilda once I get it on the road again.

Man...so jealous. I wish I had a garage. :)

My first real car was a '66 bug.

Honest. Looks great.

f*ck yeah I couldn't think of a better first car. I've come to the conclusion that beetles are basically giant toys. They're so easy to pull apart and rebuild it feels like I'm playing with knex or something. It's a tragedy modern engineering has pretty much killed the idea of fixing your own car up yourself. I feel like I'm living in the twilight years of it where there are still unrestored classic cars around that haven't rusted to pieces and are still slightly affordable for the common man. It'll all be over soon.

I'm pretty sure with reproduction parts and stuff, You could just build a brand new VW Beetle, Using no old parts. You'd just need to find a car with a VIN though. Or try to get that car registered somehow.

So its engine rebuild time, I started last week with the 1300cc seized engine from my '67. The plan is to rebuild this one, swap it with the 1600 so I have a working car while I rebuild that one. Couldnt wait to find out why this piece of sh*t wouldnt turn over, I found out alright.

So heres the engine as it was when I got it

http://i.imgur.com/SBRo5EU.jpg

When I first removed it

http://i.imgur.com/xG6IDLg.jpg

After the first day of removing, labeling and bagging parts I was left with this

http://i.imgur.com/dTOgBHK.jpg

A box of bagged parts (and a pile as well)

http://i.imgur.com/2SYls7w.jpg

And instructions to rebuild once Im done

http://i.imgur.com/81aTySE.jpg

Found some weird sh*t as I was tearing out down, f*cking snails and walnuts jammed in around the spark plugs what the f*ck, also found a couple loose bolts and nuts just chilling in the exhaust pipeing, mustve run loud as.

http://i.imgur.com/mGtuxUD.jpg

Sick little engine trolley I made for half of what I wouldve bought one for

http://i.imgur.com/bcpt2ay.jpg

Getting smaller, but at this point I realised it with the two right pistons that were completely seized in thier barrels.

http://i.imgur.com/CodG3HS.jpg

Freedom! (for the left pistons)

http://i.imgur.com/MmTTfWz.jpg

I finally got them out with some DW-40, a wooden block and a sledge hammer, but theyre pretty far gone. Im going to but a new piston+barrel set.

http://i.imgur.com/3dGzJ2M.jpg

Yeah theyre f*cked.

http://i.imgur.com/LXuqTCH.jpg

Finally the crankshaft is free to turn over, its a good feeling.

http://i.imgur.com/mmrxRr4.jpg

Hopefully within the next couple days I can crack this baby open and begin the cleaning and rebuild.

Are you getting the engine block sand-blasted or just giving it a good clean?

I'm thinking I'll clean it by hand I had a go over it yesterday with a wire brush and got like 80 percent of the crap off. I might drop the whole thing into a bucket of vinegar and degreaser its been working really well for rust and oil removal on the smaller parts

Its been a little while so I thought Id check in with a quick update on whats been going on. Since I last posted pics of the car Ive pretty much repainted and sanded the entire thing (I didnt sand the primer well enough the first time and laid the top coat on too thin which cause all sorts of problems) Finished the wiring, dropped the engine back in and Ive now begun work on the doors and rear mudguards which are pretty much the last things I have to do before I can put in the interior and windows. Its getting close now! Heres some pics from various times over the last couple months.

After the repainting and sanding with a few bits of added trim (notice the freshly painted suspension and underbody)

f5iva4b.jpg

My mate the other day after we took it for its first spin around the neighborhood (notice the deluxe aftermarket milk crate seat)

2eXf3be.jpg

GeNCYaa.jpg

And today as I put the hood back on and started assembling the front mud guards. sh*ts getting there!

Somehow I recall that particular model of Beetle, as a rare one.

I mean with the large trunk but still with the flat windscreen, the small taillights and the old-style dashboard as pictured here...

Nice to see such a decent build-up in an offtopic thread.

Edit:

Just saw the white Beetle. That thing looks veeery interesting.

I'd personally say it is a pre '65. With the little chrome vents at the front and the chrome details as a whole. But what do I know, lol. The only OZ-built Bug which I have seen was in Birdwood/S.A. And other cars were a bit more interesting for me, coming from Germany, just 60 kms from Hessisch-Oldendorf.

THE Hessisch-Oldendorf with the worlds largest VW-meetup. With people bringing their cars from Japan, Australia and the Americas.

I dont know if Id call my '71 rare but imo its one of the last good beetles because in '72 they came out with those ridiculous drum sized tail lights, ugly rounded front window and cheap looking plastic dash. My white beetle is a bit different and might actually be a bit rare I nede to do more research into it, from what I know its a '67 made in Australia meaning its more like a '63 for US and Euro markets, there might be a few other little differences Im not sure. They werent made here for very long and its cool that the sheet metal was stamped and made right here in Aus.

Sweet. Even if the target date isn't met...great progress and I can't even begin to express how envious I will be of your final reward.

1st Q haha. nothing on this car has been easy, rebuilding these doors was one of the most painful experiences of my life, blood sweat and tears the whole way. From sandblasting, to filling, sanding, primer, sanding, paint, (lots of sanding) to repro parts not fitting and that god damn motherf*cking quarter window its been a hard trek.

UPDATE

Things have been going slow but steady, I recently repainted and rebuilt the dash because I wasnt happy with the first job I did and the dash is what Ill be looking at the most so I wanted it looking schmick, cars running and all that left to do is the interior then pop the windows in, its all finally coming together. Sometimes I just get fed up with the f*cking thing and take a month off, most of this car has been pure hell to complete, nothing has been easy. And now with winter here its even harder to get motivated, Ive been doing at least an hour a day recently and more on weekends even with a full time job so its going to get finished one way or another

Finally the interior is going in... Over the past few months Ive finished off all the paintwork, Installed all the sound deadening/foam padding, recovered most of the seat parts, started gluing the headliner in and have generally been finishing up the many remaining tiny issues keeping it from completion. Its surprising how much Im still learning even on the home stretch, upholstery was one thing that I was really dreading but as with all things if you have the right tools, techniques and patience anything can be achieved. I'm hoping the next pictures I post will be of me driving the thing but I''m not holding my breath, this has been a long journey.

My god its been over a year since I posted an update in here. Due to real life bullsh*t things have been moving slow, but just last week I finally go the car into the upholsters and they finished off the headliner for me, they now have the seat backs for the front seats and promise me theyre going to look shmick, Ive popped a couple windows in this week and I can see the finish line in sight which is really encouraging me to make that final push to completing this now 4 year project
