I think chrome became popular in GTA online because it was the most expensive paint job and you needed like 25 or 35 race wins to get them, so it became like a status people for those who unlocked it, it was only later on that people realised how hideous chrome looks on pretty much all the cars in the game.

I don't have the metals unlocked and I want to unlock them...but I didn't chrome any of my cars because of that...
