Seriously, GTA V improved on a lot of aspects that the previous didn't have. People complained in IV about lack of countryside and map being too small but V fixed that. it's more dynamic, breathtaking graphics and has an incredible amount of detail. The list could go on...

Probably should go to the GTA series section but I'd have to say it's a tie between GTA III and GTA IV

 

GTA 3 - Best atmosphere by far and the missions are still the best one by far because of the creativeness at times or simply random, a bit challenging at times.. something the current HD games need

 

GTA IV - Best story and characters, multiplayer was amazing and much better than GTA Online

This. IMO had the best narrative and something about a silent protagonist leaves a lot up to the imagination, which I like. IV is very close for me.

But yah GTA:Online is my fav for sure. I mean san andreas was great but nostalgia isn't enough for me to put it over the fun and beyond ludicrous "action movie worthy" things that I've done in gta online.

I kinda lean towards San Andreas. Yes it was stupid overall, but it had some cool features, some of which i'd like to see again. Probably V as my all time favorite, though.

I have to go with San Andreas, I still fire it up on the ps3 now and then. And also like gtaiv I seriously think the storyline in that would make for a great movie.

Bowling wasn't part of the story, and as annoying as that line was coming from Roman at least we memorized these iconic guys, I still barely remembered half of the characters from GTA V aside from the main ones.

All the nostalgia air heads saying GTA III. But without a doubt GTA San Andreas is the most ambitious and better than most of these sandbox games out today, and it was running off PS2/Xbox Hardware!! In my opinion Rockstar hasn't even made one better since then. They tried to with V but its not the same.
