GTA 5's online mode is the "gift that keeps on giving," Take-Two says about its monetary opportunity

In the past, Take-Two would ship a product and the collect its money, but now the company can create platforms that allow for recurrent consumer spending, CEO Strauss Zelnick says.

From a financial standpoint, Grand Theft Auto V's multiplayer component Grand Theft Auto Online is "the gift that keeps on giving," according to Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two Interactive.

Speaking today on FOX Business' Risk & Reward program, Zelnick said GTA Online is an example of Take-Two adapting its business practices to create platforms that generate sustained revenue instead of a one-off jolt.

"Just a few years ago when we put out a product no matter how big, we put out a hit, we collected our money, we went on to the next [game]," Zelnick said. "Now [what] we're finding is we're creating recurrent consumer spending and we have the gift that keeps on giving."

"I talked about that when we took over Take-Two six years ago...It's nice to see it coming true," he added.

GTA V has shipped 32.5 million copies and some 70 percent of all users have played Grand Theft Auto Online. Take-Two is keeping the all-important ARPU (average revenue per user) figure a secret, but from the enthusiastic way in which Zelnick talks about GTA Online, it wouldn't be surprising to learn that the online mode is performing quite well monetarily.

For Take-Two's quarter ended December 31, the company reported that net revenue from digitally delivered content grew 42 percent year-over-year to $132.8 million. This was led by GTA Online, Zelnick said at the time.

What a conincidence! It's the gift that keeps on giving for me too. And I haven't even had to buy a single cash card!

Admins on this site need to figure out a way to put a filter that prevents anyone saying anything about cash cards, making threads about cash cards.

Deer don't have money, silly. And I doubt Trevor's rifle is connected to the internet.

I remember SP2MP'ing Franklins Buffalo, fully modded, to sell in GTAO.

That was the gift that kept on giving.

And with this, R* has officially declared SP as we used to know it officially dead

RIP GTA SP.

don't post if you don't like it

Hurray for fascism.

Ontopic: So? R* are making money, just like a healthy company should....the point?

Or are people who use their services & buy their games now hoping they fail & shut the online servers down?

And with this, R* has officially declared SP as we used to know it officially dead

RIP GTA SP.

R* have stated months ago they're working on SP DLC. Stop being so dramatic. The main game kinda gives it away as well with Don Percival's post-story e-mail.

yes. i am. not gonna lie about it.If you dislike it so much then stop playing its a pretty simple concept that even a simpleton like yourself can figure out.

As far as the OP goes I can't believe a company has the audacity to try and make a profit on something they spent millions upon millions of dollars and years developing. Not only that but they continue to give us free updates and free DLC. Those bastards. Why can't they just give us free stuff while taking a significant loss to their bottom line so they can make people who will complain about anything happy.

Why?

In fact, why profess so much hate for it yet keep playing?

It's akin to someone being against the killing of animals, yet they work at a fur coat factory.

Yeah, because cash card conspiracy threads aren't old. Jesus some of you guys are dense, anyone who thinks a corporation should not pursue profits to sustain it's business is an absolute moron. You should be glad they've created a profitable game, that means they'll be able to make more. If that idea offends you, then I only have 2 questions: why are you here, and why do you keep playing it?

I doubt he plays the game because if he did then he would be appalled that the only mission people are playing these days is rooftop rumble. I tried to host half a dozen lobbies for other missions tonight.. as soon as people arrived they left because it wasn't a easy money making operation like RR :(

But whatever.. as long as they sell cash cards.. then everything is fine.

Indeed. I can't stand that mission anymore. I avoid it like the plague.

I'll lead off with RR, Chemical Extraction, or a race, and take the best option at the voting screen. Been doing this since day one, have not once felt the need to buy a cash card.

who said i hated it? all i said is that i hope they fail and the online gets shutdown. i think it would be better for everyone if they did. they obviously aren't capable of making an online game correctly. i understand that things change overtime, but the transition rocktar made from all of their previous game to V:GTAO is unwelcomed. they have lost their touch and are nothing but a shell of their former selves. i think it will take a major loss for them to act right. they have been too successful, and got cocky (with good reason i suppose...)

zelnick isn't making anything better. cash cards have manipulated the game in a way that currently makes them look bad, (but i suppose that it MAY get better overtime) but this isn't about me, and i don't have a problem with entitlement, even though i shelled out 3x more money for the game than most others. its about principle. but you know, even though im a consumer, i don't have the right to dislike something or else i'm bitching and moaning...

i understand that they find the microtransaction business model beneficial, but they made a lot of fans upset with their approach. they care more for their share holders than the people who actually buy and play the game. not to say that they don't appreciate their fans, but they just care about their shareholders more. even though they give out free content (not complaining about that!) i feel that they just... i don't know...

so basically for TL;DR

I dislike rockstars approach on cash cards, but i understand it. it wont keep me from playing the game and enjoying it, but it will make me look at rockstar differently now.

hopefully rockstar will do something that will make me change my beliefs and support cash cards. as for now, i wont buy one, and i will not advocate them.

but who gives a f*ck what i think, right?

I'm okay with this model as it keeps refreshing content without having to pay for exclusive content (weapons, cars, clothes, etc.).
