Controversial Music Opinions?

Drake sucks.

This is controversial? I thought this was a universal fact.

I don't consider "music" that was compiled 100% on a computer to be music. Basically anything in the dubstep direction. It is one thing to take actual instruments and alter the way they sound to make it different, but just throwing a bunch of wubs and robot sh*t into a rhythm doesn't make it music according to my ears.

Only going to address your first point here as your second opinion has been debunked pretty thoroughly by other people. Drake is a great song writer and a very good artist, so to say he 'sucks' is controversial yes. Not sure what type of bubble you are living in with people who think he sucks. But it must be awful.

Drake is a decent song writer, I just think he sucks as a rapper. If you want me to go on, I can.

The irony of this statement whilst you are flying Childish Gambino's flag, one of the biggest frauds going in hip-hop at the moment. Certified white people hip-hop.

Once a song is used in an advert, it's f*cking dead to me.

Mr. House

Once a song is used in an advert, it's f*cking dead to me.

That is by no means controversial.

Some of mine:

-Tegan and Sara are a better song-writing duo than Lennon/McCartney.

-Prince was better than Michael Jackson.

-Bob Dylan is the best individual singer/songwriter of all time (read: better than Neil Young and Springsteen)

-metalcore (fusion of metal and hardcore punk) is a match made in heaven and one of the best musical innovations in the past 20 years

-indie rock is, for the most part, no better than generic radio buttrock

I cucked Alex Jones

Some acts, like Arcade Fire and Death Cab for Cutie, are terribly overrated, but indie rock encompasses so much music, I don't think you can just dismiss it like that.

Pulp is by far the best indie rock band.

Yikes to that first one. I like Tegan and Sara as well but reeeeeeeeeeally.

Second one is definitely open for debate.

"Progressive" Pop Trance / Dream Trance is a depressing music

There's nothing wrong with Dubstep & Brostep as long as it sounds good.

I'd rather listen to Industrial Experimental and Terrorcore all day long than to mainstream pop, pop rap and "RnB" music.

Disco is still the best dance club music.

You can stop right there while you have Chris Brown's avi tho. Drake claims so hard in his records that he is so tough and gangster but he's known for being the softest rapper in the game. He's known for saying and doing soft sh*t.

Gambino on the other hand has never portrayed that in his songs.

Also, nice play on the racist comment, like African Americans can't enjoy Gambino's body of work. Oh wait.... I am.... and I do.

Yeah nice try, but I don't think calling Childish Gambino 'white people hip-hop' quite qualifies as racism. It is more just an indictment of the fact he is the latest in a short line of rappers that have gained acceptance and popularity from whites because they feel as if he is somehow more intelligent to listen to than other rappers. If you want racism you can find it in the white people who like Childish Gambino because they somehow deem his music as more passable for stupid reasons. So congratulations on your incredible reach.

I don't give a sh*t what Gambino has or hasn't portrayed in his songs. His music is boring as f*ck. He is genuinely a bad rapper. His name its self is from an internet Wu-Tang name generator. He never took this sh*t seriously, and his whole style is like a horrific parody of Kanye West, Lil' Wayne and others. The guy is a fraud like I said. When he realised people were actually taking him seriously he changed tact, and started to take it more seriously. And now people like you lap it up because you think he's so amazing because he raps over awful techno inspired beats and doesn't rap about traditional hip hop archetypes.

Not sure what Chris Brown has to do with this but I don't think I've ever listened to a Chris Brown record and thought 'Wow, this guy sounds like he has just listened to a bunch of popular RNB and is now forcibly throwing it back up in some kind of weird parody and tongue in cheek type way'. So I guess he has that going for him. eh? Gambino is as valuable to hip-hop as Weird Al.

Well, if you actually listen to his sh*t, he can be very deep and introspective. He talks about real sh*t, not bragging about how many bitches he f*cks or how many records he sells, I'm looking back at Drake. They aren't clearly giving him passes for "stupid reasons."

You give Drake a pass, but call Gambino a bad rapper. mmkay. Gambino's wordplay and lyricism is damn near impeccable. Whether it is a "Childish" song or a serious one, he brings it. And once again, if you listen to his sh*t, you can see he took rap serious way before people took HIM serious. I can tell you don't listen to his sh*t or you don't give him the chance. He has songs where he talks about serious subject matter. You are just regurgitating what Pitchfork and every other "rapcool" tards are saying.

"Wow, this guy's name is CHILDISH GAMBINO? WOW, WHAT A FAG!" Ever heard of Ol Dirty Bastard? His name is corny, but guess what? HE CAN ACTUALLY RAP! What you just said is pretty much basing a book by the cover.

I can see how people say his style is similar to Wayne, from his older work that is, but how Kanye? Go listen to Because the Internet. The whole comparisons to Gambino and every other artist can stop.

I lap him over because Gambino shows his uniqueness and versatility. Something rap music actually lacks today. He creates something different but executes it greatly.

Where is this parody sh*t coming from? Like I said go and actually listen to his sh*t and stop following these mindless drones feeding you this BS. Gambino has proved he can be valuable to hip hop. You just haven't give him the chance.

I don't dislike the name Childish Gambino because it's stupid, I dislike it because it represents how seriously Donald Glover takes hip-hop. He used an internet wu-tang name generator. Like its suppose to be funny.

I don't need pitchfork or any 'rap cool' opinion leaders to tell me what I can work out by listening to Camp. You tell me he is unique and versatile? Is that some kind of joke? He somehow manages to be even more pseudo intellectual than Kid Cudi or Cage. The pretentiousness DRIPS from his music. He is doing nothing interesting nor savvy. He has gained popularity because white people think the type of hip hop he makes is somehow 'original'. It is genuinely so insulting.

You yourself come up with this BS in the first line of your post. 'He doesn't brag about how many record he sells or bitches he f*cks' SO WHAT!? Shall we give him a freakin' medal!? You can rap about whatever the f*ck you want to as long as its interesting. All Childish Gambino does is put down f*cking lame word play and cringe worthy jokes and then takes the flow of another rapper and spits it out over a horrifically tacky techno beat.

A name doesn't equal how serious an artist is, this is basing a book of the cover.

Apparently you do because you keep saying Gambino is just a parody rapper. He had like 4 of those "Childish" songs on Camp. The rest were introspective songs. You really don't listen to his music. I can tell by light years away. Either that or you're not giving him the chance.

Dude wrote a 70 page screenplay for an album, that is something a rap artist has never done, uniqueness. He can rap, sing, produce songs, and write, which can equal up to some good concept albums/songs, versatility. Every artist in the music business are pretentious. Lil Wayne called himself the Best Rapper Alive and Kanye called himself The Biggest Rock Star on the Planet" (btw, these are the artists you mentioned Gambino "steals" from).

He makes music for a different audience, that is why is more widely accepted by, not just whites, but also blacks. It is music that makes you think, not to "TURN UHHHHH" to. Not saying that you can't make that rap, but there is too much of it.

Okay, you can make music that grabs the attention of the kids, but you are not going to have that long. These rappers like Rich Homie Quan, Migos, Future, Young Thug, and etc. are not going to last long. That don't have worthy fanbases. Gambino makes music that IS going to keep him in rap and have fans that actually buy his records. With the exception of Kanye and Jay, because when they do it, it comprises to people for obvious reasons, braggadocios rap will not help you get anywhere as an artist.

That last sentence is very opinionated, but false at the same damn time. To YOU he might put out corny lyrics, but if actually LISTEN to his recent sh*t (I'm talking Camp, Royalty, and Because the Internet) he is not rapping over "techno beats." In Camp, he is rapping over alternative hip hop type tracks, in Royalty, he is rapping over trap beats, and in Because the Internet, he is rapping over experimental hip hop type tracks, which is something like using heavy synths and unconventional elements incorporated.

You need to chill out though. Judging from the posts you made, you are taking these OPINIONS to heart.

Don't worry Geth, I ain't made at you tho...

Tell me though, writing a screen play for an album. Why? What is good or interesting about this? Is his album so in depth it needs a screen play? Why do you carry this idea that he is so intelligent? Honestly. Can you give me examples of lyrics that you think are so deep and introspective? When I say pretentious, I don't mean in a 'I'm the best rapper alive' way. That is just confidence that every rapper has. I mean pretentious in the fact that like you just mentioned, he wrote a freakin' screen play for his album. Kid Cudi did the whole ACT 1, ACT 2 story narration thing on his second album and it was already f*cking terrible and unnecessary then, so I can't imagine how it is now that someone has gone the whole nine yards and wrote a screen play for their album. It's just ridiculous. It wouldn't be so bad if fans like you didn't hold it up as a reason that is so special and different.

Now that you've mentioned Young Thug, I'd just like to say that 'Danny Glover' is probably a more interesting a record than absolutely anything Gambino has put out, SCREEN PLAY BE DAMNED. You're reading this sentence now and you're like 'What the f*ck!?' That's ignorant rap! That's boring! It's so generic!' but you don't get how interesting that record actually is. Credit to the production of 808 Mafia because that is a f*cking nasty track, but what carries that song is the character Thug brings to his record. Dude is legit weird and interesting as f*ck. It's not forced. It is just bizarre and interesting music. Like when The Beatles dropped acid and made music, that sh*t was INTERESTING. It is the same principle.

Furthermore, I didn't say Gambino 'stole' from Kanye or Wayne, he just apes their musicality in a really artificial way which is why I don't take his music seriously. It is like he is trying to parody every popular rapper in hip-hop. We haven't even spoken about how bad his delivery is on record. The dude sounds like me when I use to try and rap back in high school over Deep Cover instrumentals. He just talks really fast and splutters everything out, it makes barely any sense.

LASTLY, I'm really not pissed off at all. I'm not trying to be aggressive, I'm just debating. I really think Childish sucks, and I'm sick to death of people saying how good he is whilst at the same time disregarding artists like Future, Young Thug etc. because they are somehow bad or ignorant. It's just silly.

The screenplay goes with the album, it is a concept album. It fits with it perfectly with it. If you actually read the damn thing, you can see why Gambino gets praise. It is not because "he just wrote a screenplay."

That Danny Glover song is about nothing that you just said. It is about saving girls with his dick, his money, and his guns. If that is interesting to you, you have some very bad taste in music. That song is not giving any depth or anything that makes you think. It is Double Bubble Gum rap. Anyone that praises Young Thug for his "weirdness" aren't listening to music outside of commercial rap.

Once again, for the 90000th time, if you actually LISTEN to his sh*t, you can see he is more than a parody rapper. He has songs where he can get deep. You aren't listening to his music are you? That is like me saying all Eminem raps about challenging every rapper, how good he is, and his success, e.g. Not Afraid and Survival.

You are debating against people's opinions. OPINIONS. That doesn't make sense. No matter what info I can spew at you to make it seem like Young Thug is a sh*tty rapper who isn't gonna hit GOLD in his career, it won't change anything. I am debating against you to counteract your non-factual arguments. Like the whole "parody rapper thing."

They disregard rappers like Thug and Future because it is not worth listening to. It is like comparing a snack food (Thug and Future) to a high class dessert (Gambino). You can mindless chomp away at the snack because that is how it is made. It can satisfy some, but not those with higher standards. High class desserts takes some slowing down and demands you to enjoy how complex it is. In the end, I'll like more of the high class dessert. It gives me true satisfaction more than the snack will ever will.

WOW. This is EXACTLY what I'm talking about! You think you are so intelligent and smart in the same way you think Childish is intelligent and smart. It is RIDICULOUS. The food analogy sums up EVERY Childish Gambino fan there is going. There is nothing complex about Gambino's music. The word play you posted whilst not as bad as some of the sh*t I heard on Camp, means nothing in the grand scheme of things. He made a few intelligent references to an american poet WOW! SO CULTURED. SO LAYERED. SO COMPLEX. Seriously give me a break. Besides, I have known tons of rappers to be good wordsmiths but it doesn't mean they are good rappers and artists overall at all. For example, this line:

I melt gimmicks every time I spit, with rhymes like crowds in health clinics cause every line is sick.

That honestly is probably one of the best lines I've ever heard in rap. Not only is the word play on point but the multi syllable rhyming is absolutely flawless. It was by a rapper named Copywrite. Do I think Copywrite is one of the best rappers ever? No. Because he isn't. He lacks on creating good records, his flow is pretty off a lot of the time and although he is intelligent, that doesn't equate to being a good artist. It is the same principle with Gambino (though he is definitely less intelligent, and more pseudo intellectual). He can occasionally spit these lines that could be described as witty and interesting but that doesn't set him apart from anyone. Only people like you who have his dick rammed so far down your throat that you think he is the next Shakespeare or something.

Why do I give a f*ck about whether Young Thug will have a gold record or not? Do you know how much attention I pay to sales figures when enjoying the music I listen to? About 0%. Why would I? Why would you? Do you think because Gambino sells a lot of records that validates what you are saying?

Honestly the last paragraph is one of the most pretentious things I've ever read in my life. Firstly though I'd like to point out Future isn't a rapper, and much like Danny Glover, Move That Dope is a better record than Gambino could ever hope to produce. Your supposed 'higher standards' are non existent my man. To carry on with your food analogy, you think you are having a gourmet dessert but really you are blind folded and someone has given you a dollar twinky. But carry on, if this is what makes you feel like you are different to others I'm happy for you. You are just as pretentious as the artist you love so much, no wonder you dig his music so much. I'm surprise you are on a Grand Theft Auto forum, isn't there some Sartre you should be debating somewhere right now on a french philosophy website?

Instead of ranting and raving about nonsense, you didn't even try to discredit the lyrics and songs. So how do go on about criticizing Gambino's intelligence? Maybe counter-argue with something that makes sense, it will help you better.

You said name his best lyrics and songs, then you make a dumb argument like that one. Make up your mind child. Like I predicted, you blew the whole thing off to make an argument that doesn't make any sense. I can't name a bad song from Gambino except from his Sick Boi and Poindexter mixtapes. He is actually consistent with his work. That to me makes him a good artist. If you actually researched the lyrics, you can see how Gambino's lyricism sets him apart from every rapper today. He's one of the best punchline rappers today. And let's not forget you had Drake's dick all up in ya' ass a couple of posts ago...

I said that Young Thug will not go Gold for two reasons because, 1. I knew you were stupid enough to try and counter argue with that. 2. His fanbase are a bunch of kids, kids don't buy albums. But seriously, that whole thing had nothing to do what with I'm talking about, that was just an example

Future is somewhat of a rapper. He's a hybrid almost. He can rap and sing. While he does a piss poor job of doing so, he is that and he is selling records doing it. That second sentence is very opinionated. I can name 20 songs that Gambino put out that sh*ts all over Move That Dope, but since you will blow that off like you did with the lyrics, I'm going to spare you.

You use your analogy, but don't give any construction of how Gambino is more like a twinky. And I will carry on btw, if you think Thug or Future is better than Gambino, then go ahead witcha bad 'self and listen to that garbage, while I listen to something with more meaning and depth. I should be asking you the same thing, you haven't made any posts in the Grand Theft Auto sections, but you are on a GTA Forum, f*ck outta here, go to KanyeToThe where your "Thugga La Flame" and Future are loved.

I seriously hope you're joking when you say these are lyrically and linguistically brilliant. These lyrics are almost as bad as Ab Soul's musing that 'I wrote like Edgar Allan, I was Poe like Edgar Allan'

My mockery was because you're insinuating that I couldn't figure out a lyric as vapid as 'EE Cummin on her face, now that’s poetry in motion.'

If you like Gambino, fine. I don't really care about that, but talking sh*t about other rappers when THIS is your holy grail is a little misinformed.

I've made lots of posts in the GTA section and um..how is that relevant to the quip I made? I was making a joke about philosophers that cliches like yourself love. I was alluding to the fact that cultural bastions such as yourself must see themselves as above a franchise like GTA, no? Do you understand?

The lyrics and songs discredit themselves. If you really need someone to break down for you why those lines are lame, tacky and ridiculous then I don't know what to say to you. The fact you quote them and think they are somehow intelligent and more worthy than other rappers is ridiculous. You can disregard this as ranting or raving, I'm just laughing at how much of a pretentious person you are. You literally live up to every Gambino fan archetype aside from the fact you aren't white. It is amazing. I'm also clearly not the only person to think so as evidenced above.

Like you really don't get it do you. I don't think Childish Gambino is stupid. I think he is a pseudo intellectual. There is a difference. Do you need to google the term or something? I think both YOU and Gambino (but especially you) are pretentious pseudo intellectuals. You think you are smarter than you actually are. The absolute cheek of you to question mine and others intelligence whilst holding up Childish Gambino as some kind of intellectual juggernaut is a joke. Making a reference to me having 'Drakes dick all up in my ass' doesn't really hold up. I'm not flying Drake's flag. I don't think he is some kind of amazing original rapper. I just think he is a good artist and song writer.

Half of your posts don't even make sense like. What do you mean I was stupid enough to counter? I didn't counter anything. I just said what you said was irrelevant and stupid. Which it was! I think you are a little out of your depth here man. Better retreat to your Gambino intellectuals club and analyse his screen play and lyrics.

''Guys did you know cumming, and cummin' can be used interchangeably and ONE is a poet! I mean wow!! I haven't heard word play this inspired since Shakespeare'''

-metalcore (fusion of metal and hardcore punk) is a match made in heaven and one of the best musical innovations in the past 20 years

As much as I enjoy Earth Crisis and bands of that ilk, I don't see how it's all that innovative - they just did it well. I just hope you're not referring to the melodic metalcore groups like Killswitch Engage and Underoath, which is on the whole ripped off of swedish melodeath that came out in the 90s, but with eyeliner and cropped bangs.

Hate to say it, but I am. Just not those particular bands. I like Every Time I Die and Cancer Bats as well as some of the scene queen bands of the past 5 years. I'm not saying they are particularly innovative, just that it was an innovation in a liberal sense. It wasn't my point that they're super original.

I'm not nearly as big of a metalhead as you, so I don't expect you to agree with me, but that sh*t just tickles my fancy.

Converge and Every Time I Die I think are in a whole other ballpark as those more melodeath rip off bands - I'm not a huge fan of them (I have a hard time getting into Converge but they're f*cking great live), but they're good at what they do.

Madonna can actually sing very well, contrary to many peoples opinions of her. However she is not a naturally gifted singer like Mariah Carey or the late Whitney Houston so she'll never have a range greater than 3 octaves and the middle of her range is really her strongest.

But for someone who is self-trained she is a very competent singer.
