Th3MaN1
From a simple texture or model, to an entirely new game, game modifications can enhance the gameplay experience, give it more life or re-playability, or even turn the game around, creating an entire new feel. This is one of the PC games' advantages, modding. What mods, in particular are your favorite? Mine would have to be: http://www.moddb.com/mods/payne-evolution Payne Evolution is a mod for Max Payne 2 which introduces a lot of features and mechanics from Max Payne 3, while still keeping the same setting, story and characters. It also adds new maps to Dead Man Walking, along with other modders' works added in there. It's simply awesome.
Satourn
I have several GTA mods that I can list as my favorites. All of them have new storyline, introduce new characters etc. Great Theft Car - this mod is very well-known. It continues from where SA has ended. The storyline can feel a little out-of-place, but the way it was executed... Also it has the Building Businesses thing, I guess it originated from VCS. Hell On Wheels - My oh my, this is certainly the best modification for GTA SA so far. It tells you about a biker who has just been released from jail. The plot twists are great, the atmosphere is incredible. I'd also like to mention all the work on new character and car models and, of course, map additions. Left 4 Theft - it continues CJ's story but in a strange way - the zombie apocalypse. I'd recommend it for zombie shooter fans. The GTA LCS and VCS adaptations - although I didn't download them, I do like the idea of porting the console game on PC on SA's engine. Frosted Winter - probably the only GTA III mod so far that is worth playing. It's also the only one that has new storyline as far as I've seen. Th3MaN1
Well, gonna have to check out those. I played Great Theft Car, but to me it seemed like it dragged on way too much. I also played Left 4 Theft, but for some reason the newest version is not working for me.
BarelyLegal
Insurgency mod using the Half Life 2 engine, now made into a Standalone game. Probably the best shooter I've ever played.

That game was a mod first? Never knew about it. Just like Counter Strike.
Fireman
There's a lot of fantastic mods, but the problem with big mods is that they hardly ever get finished, especially Total Conversions. I always like modding games myself, don't always release stuff, released stuff for San Andreas, Omerta, Carmageddon (this was more of a collection of other people's mods though) and Baldur's Gate, but also made a ton of other mods for myself, like Mount and Blade troops and stuff. I wouldn't know what is the best mods, there's a lot of great mos out there. What I do know is that I have more than 400GB of mods installed right now! Most GB's for Fallout: NV, Skyrim, Mount and Blade and the Sims 3. Edited April 5, 2014 by Fireman
Th3MaN1
Holy sh*t, 400GB to me is quite a lot of mods. Thank god these games actually support modding. I've never understood why games like CoD allow modding, while Battlefield allows nothing.

a20characterusername
I like the Fall From Heaven 2 mod for Civ4, plus about a dozen more that I can't remember the names of. Usually I just make my own mods though, but they're usually just bugfixes and/or balance mods. I used to do ROM hacking years ago and made a few hardtype and partial conversion hacks, but that's it really.
Fireman
I have a massive problem with mods though, mainly that the best mods come from Russians, Poles and Chinese and it's A LOT of effort to find and download those. Same goes for modded ports of other games, those mods are always the best, but so hard to find. I managed so far with Google translate, but sometimes certain mods contain partially translated items, so in New Vegas (for example) my Fission Battery ended up being ÏÖoÏoIo'oioioioioiolllll. Those restoration mods of removed/disabled content are always the best though, because they don't feel like a mod. They've done this for Fallout 2, Baldur's Gate, SW: KotOR and almost every other RPG I've played, there's always a restoration/fix mod with a 10 page list of fixes and additions. CantThinkOfOne2013
GTA mods are my favourite, I've always wanted GTA to be set in real places and I can have that with mods, I can also have any vehicle or weapon that I want. I wish my laptop was powerful enough to run GTA IV so I could have modded that game into what it should have been.
RedDagger
Do things like Team Fortress and Counter Strike count? They started off as mods from Half Life *and quake, and look at them now... Anyway, since my computer can't really play games I haven't had experience with many mods. However, Midtown Madness still has an active modding community 14 years on, from improving the game, doing things that couldn't be done in the vanilla game because of the power of PCs at the time (including simple things like making the rear-view camera render as much as the forward facing camera instead of 5m behind the car, make the game look/play better, etc.). I'd say that's my favourite type of mod. Of course, the most common is people adding various vehicles and the like. Good for people starting out with modding! Also, never knew about Midtown Madness. Sounds pretty fun. The only mods I've ever done were weapon.dat modifications for San Andreas, but that's pretty easy stuff. Moth
If a game has a healthy modding community and it's easy to mod it, you'll see me playing mods for that game. Hell the first time I ever played GTA III was when it was modded. Fallout 3/NV and TES games are usually games I mod the hell out of. Same goes for The Sims 2 and 3. Wish more games had that kind of mod support. a20characterusername and Th3MaN1
