Australian boots are on the ground in Iraq but we are only there in a "mentoring" capability. However that doesn't mean we aren't armed and won't participate in combat operations or retaliate when fired upon. It just means overall we place emphasis on mentoring and developing the local military forces. For example there's a difference between going to a location where the primary objective is to engage the enemy compared to going to a location to brief local elders and coming under enemy fire, retreating then launching a counter offensive maneuver. So no we are not on the ground fighting ISIS we are on the ground to primarily run courses and provide infrastructure/equipment for the local military. As of yet we aren't a fighting force we are a mentoring force with the capability to launch combat operations.

I'm actually happy! I've been down in the dumps for quite some time but today I genuinely feel happy and I'm loving every second of it. Made some awesome new friends, love my job, and get to go surfing this weekend for my 21st birthday!
