is SA the Most overrated game in history?

Recommended Posts

Nah. I've never got 100% in any GTA

Seriously, then what makes otherwise think are we talking about?

It's not your prerogative then to believe that I'm too defensive; knowing that your playstyle varies from mine, and also you've to play this game with the same level of total interest; just like GTA IV :p

After all, a game where people regularly attempt to spend the most time are often those games they like to play; irrespective how others take it.

@ Militia

That's the whole point why I still find GTA SA amazing. Can't really say I find the same level of crazy fun and willingly spend hours in GTA IV ( incl. GTA V ) other than, that I felt it was worth playing for a change to enjoy the details and few decent side missions that made up for poor Niko.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm literally the polar opposite to you.

Yeah well don`t bother with long posts because when someone has his own opinion stuck deep inside nothing will change his mind. I know that, i gave up on convincing people that VCS in No. 1 GTA game a long time ago.

BTW, do you know that`s sonny forelly`s artwork in your avatar and not tommy vercetti`s? I didn`t know that untill yesterday  I always thought that is Tommy but he seems little too soft for Tommy so i did a homework and found out it`s a sonny`s artwork.

Anyway back on topic, i would say SA was a huge f*cking hit back in 2004 and still is these days. It was so damn good game that you couldn`t even believe your own eyes. Especially for someone like myself who jumped from super mario on nintendo right on GTA SA :catspider::karmaeater: .

I will never forget when a friend called me and said "wow you`re not going to believe what an awesome f*cking game i`m playing. You can do like everything, you can work out on bench press and get bigger than arnold scwarzenneger, you can shoot people with gatling gun, dive under water, get tattoos and even play pool in a bar and then beat the sh*t out of a co-player. It`s almost like a movie, it`s way better than street fighter on super nintendo man" and i was like wow, you`re joking me man.

Than he lent me a PS2 and GTA SA and i saw that he was telling the truth. Consider that SA was my 1.st game on PS2 so imagine how trilled and happy i was. Right next day i went and bought myself a new PS2 and GTA SA and that was a day when my SA experience started and it lasted untill these days.

So hell yeah it was a f*cking awesome game, it pushed PS2 limitations to it`s extremes. Even today it`s unbelievable that PS2 supported so much stuff on 1 cd only.

So if someone knows what hell of a game this was it`s me, ok. I`ve played it 5 years non-stop.

But now we have GTA V which is as great as SA was plus has a sense of realism which many of us missed at 3D era GTA`s.

And yet are the things i prefer in SA to V and reverse.

SA was so great to me especially because i was a huge fan of boyz`n`hood movie and it gave you that real feeling of west coast gangsta theme.

I know one thing and that is GTA SA and V completely shadowed my IV experience. To me IV looks like a sh*t compare to V and SA.

Oh and one more thing, did i see right that someone above wrote SA had hard missions? SA has ridicolously easy missions, in fact every other GTA in 3D era is harder to beat. Even those moronic Zero`s missions aren`t tough when you`ve mastered them. They were tough only 1.st time.

But it`s always the same with all GTA`s, for the 1.st time you play almost every mission feels hard, when you play it 2.nd time seems a lot easier, when you play it 3.rd or 4.th time it becomes ridicolously easy.

Before and after GTA V I have heard people say that SA is the best GTA ever, and having played through it again recently, I find that incredible!

I'll agree that the world is good (however has nothing on V's world) and CJ is a great protagonist, but playing the game , the missions are atrociously bad, there is no fun involved, they are either ridiculously hard or just boring!

It was good when it was released, however I don't understand why people still enjoy playing it in comparison to the HD games?

The Last of Us is the most overrated game in history.

GTA V is the most overrated GTA game in history.

People hated San Andreas because it was too wacky and over the top. Then GTA IV came and people complained it didn't have enough to do like in SA.
Thus Rockstar made GTA V a middle ground

Or you simply can use new GTAForums feature that saves post if you wrote enough amount of text (e.x. You write more than 12 words, post will be saved). It may still be saved, but i think it got replaced when you were writing another post, so next time, you have this like feature.

I think it may be overrated in a sense similar to others such as Ocarina of Time; significantly dated but easy to see why it is a classic. But then my time with this series hasn't been too extensive - I've fooled around in the first a bit and watched friends fool around in Vice City. I've only finished SA, IV, and V. So I can't gauge SA's quality compared to past games really. Might get VC off PSN soon, not sure about the others. Usually don't mind outdated stuff, but there are exceptions like Super Mario 64 or Metroid that were very hard to force my way through.

Compared to V it's no contest. V tried to sell itself as a return to SA's style but turned out to be pretty shallow. Kind of like the Goldeneye "remake" though at least there it was more obvious. Had been disappointed with IV at first, due to lack of tons of features and countryside and all. Missed planes specifically, though I suppose they wouldn't lend themselves well to a city full of skyscrapers anyway as much as helicopters do. Other stuff has grown on me, like the physics engine and level design. Features themselves make me question quality vs quantity. IV would certainly be better with more stuff but then how good would much of it have turned out?

Hmm I've been thinking about giving SA another go. I have GTA III and VC downloaded on my PS3 so logically it should be next. Sometimes I think I'm too harsh on SA. It's not that I hate it, but I did prefer the direction taken with GTA IV.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't think SA wasn't one of the most influential games ever made however.

I am 20.09% Completion in GTA IV and today will be my third day into the game. STILL trying to get used to judging the distance and speed when to apply the E-Brake and drift into my next turn :p The Bike Physics...Holy hell...I really like this game, though (IV) and am gonna hit 100% in a couple weeks, that's for sure. Even generating a unique and/or EC vehicle collection, and once 100% is obtained, gonna use the girlfriend exploit to BP/DP/EP all 10 of my vehicles.

But yeah, I'd check out SA again. No matter how slow it goes, it's very good. The missions have an extreme variation compared to other games, imo. Some outrageously crazily fake missions, too, though. However, it's still my favorite.

What i like the most in SA and V for that matter is the open world. You`re not limited on the city only like in the other games, you have desert you have mountains, forest etc. It makes you feel more realistic.

So i`ll never understand when someone says he prefer 3 to SA or IV to V. WTF??! Tell me what is so better in 3 than SA or in IV than V. You are forced to be in the city only and that indeed feels claustrofobical. Not like that weirdo from V forum who said that V is claustrofobical LOL.

There's more to a GTA game than just its map. Claustrophobic urban environments have always been apart of the series. Have you played GTA 1?

IMO both LC renditions are simply great. GTA III's is a bit on the small side, but has a great atmosphere and I love that GTA IV's is much closer to being like NYC. I prefer it to LS/BC 10 times over.

I don't know what's so hard to understand dude really when it's just a preference. Some people just like the cold and dark streets of LC from both eras.

I could basically write a novel on why I prefer GTA IV to GTA V, but that's not what the thread's about.

I'd argue V's countryside is pretty lazily designed; a lot of it is just filled up with mountains that don't have a lot of detail. Other than those, there's a very small desert and a lake and a small section of woods. SA felt much more varied in its landscape to me, with more rivers and intersecting roads and cliffs and canyons, etc. Probably helped that there were three smaller cities to travel between rather than one shoved into the bottom part of the map.

This is where SA really shines. Thinking about it the map in SA makes more sense (geographically speaking) than it does in GTA V. The towns in SA are pretty much like a lot of small towns in real life. You need to drive through them to reach another city.

In GTA V however the towns are pretty useless. There's no real reason to visit Paleto Bay for example. To SA's credit the small towns typically have unique aspects to visit them like safehouses.

GTA V's map really needed another city IMO. I don't like how LS is shoved down the bottom with 70% of the rest of the map being countryside/desert. At least SA struck a good balance despite being physically smaller.

It`s interesting how you are praising SA`s map and complaining at V`s map today in 2014 when you know very well you have that overally great game (V) with more or less the best GTA map so far but if someone would told you that you should go play SA again instead of V you probably wouldn`t want to do it. Well maybe you would but you certainly wouldn`t enjoy it as you did back in 2004/5/6 and escpecially not because you got V.

And i`m betting that most of the people who have complaints about V`s map these days will after few years from now when VI will come out, say that V`s map was the best and that VI`s sucks..

This is how things have always worked. To me, the only 2 maps i didn`t like were 3 and LCS because of it`s ridicolously small size and dull atmosphere. Other than these 2 i`ve always loved every map but i like V`s and SA`s the most.

That V doesn`t have many ghost towns doesn`t bother me at all because it has more details, it has realistic graphic that looks almost like real life map. And that counts a lot to me.

Not me. IMO GTA V's map will still be bland by the time GTA VI releases.

Being "realistic" is a moot point. Graphics will always improve, it's the same old song and dance every gen. What matters is design. The lack of physics, driving being dumbed down, sparse NPCs, scripted events around every corner, all on top of what I already said about SA's map, made V really boring to explore. It holds the record for the shortest time I bothered playing it before selling it.

It's kind of hard to dispute GTA V's beauty. Yes the game looks great, but it's pretty much like the Mona Lisa being painted on cardboard. That's basically what the map feels like to me.

@boxman108, V`s map is boring to explore? Ok if V` map is boring than all the other GTA maps are super-drop-dead-boring lol

You put all GTA maps together in one and it would still be more boring than V.

That`s the reason i said to V forum topic about map complains that some fans are ungrateful. No offense, it`s nothing personal but R* put all the efforts into making this huge map that it looks almost like real life map of southern California and some of people say it`s bad, boring and claustrofobical. Well if V`s map is claustrofobical than what the others are? Map of 3D LC gives you the feeling that you`re trapped on the east side of Berlin wall in 1988 or something. In V you can breath, you have a feeling that you are actually in the real, live world. I know that some of you would like more towns scatered around and more population in the desert but what you want it`s nearly impossible for PS3, in that case you would need like 20 GB just to play the game. And game like that wouldn`t cost just 60€ (50$) but it would cost a fortune. Even with todays V they pushed PS3 to it`s limits.

I think SA deserves the praise it gets. Maybe people apply their nostalgia goggles a little too much, but SA is one of the best games ever nonetheless. Maybe it's a bit weird coming from me, as a hardcore IV fan, to praise a game that fell flat when it came to the story, but unlike so many other games (*cough* V *cough*) SA achieved what it set to do, and no one can say that it didn't aim high. I just have to appreciate that, especially in our age of overblown hype and unfullfilled potential. SA is a massive game, but I feel, especially in hindsight, that it's still remarkably deep and robust. Only two other games in last 10 years came close to this balance between quality and quantity and that was Saints Row 2 and IV with DLCs. It's insane that R* were able to do this on the weakest 6th generation console.

Also, I have to praise the map design. San Fierro and Las Venturas didn't get as much love as they deserved, but R* worked some serious magic on this game. SA's variety and detail in the context of its sprawl is still unchallenged and it's amazing how massive they made the map feel even though it's quite small by today's standarts.

Simply no. SA is poorest game in the series for these obvious facts:

1. It has lots of freaky fanboys who boast about it, and also lots of haters. Talking about SA is like talking about World War II.

2. It was going to be a better game. But best-selling console of those days was PS2, so they cut about half of the content.

3. Lots of fake myths have been around it. This makes haters say it was "most unrealistic game of the series".

Well the statistics of copies selled tells a different story. According to that SA was a huge f*cking hit back there.

It`s actually quite hard to compare 3D era to HD.

You might as well just said that it`s just your own opinion on SA and you`re entitled to say that you dont`t like it but saying that it`s the poorest GTA game, well that`s a bit out of order.

It`s like with me and GTA 3, i don`t like GTA 3, as a matter of fact i hate it but that doesn`t mean it`s actualy a bad game. That i don`t like it it`s just my own opinion.

I hope you know what i mean.

The best selling GTA games;

1.) V

2.) IV

3.) SA

Good and bad is all subjective. Never mind sales are hardly telling of quality; it's simply a popularity contest. Distinguishing what is "factually" good or bad doesn't mean much at the end of the day. I'm content with calling V garbage regardless of any and all sales and reviews.

Really? I didn`t know that, i tought it was right after IV.

So SA is the 2.nd best selling GTA game.

I know that selling statistics aren`t such accurate ratings for game`s quality, that`s because of popularity like someone wrote above. For example VCS , LCS and Episodes of LC didn`t have such good selling as the others did even they were all at least decent if not good games. Just because they aren`t main titles, people considered it more like some sort of subtitles, thus it`s all about popularity.

But it`s impossible to say that those games would do such great selling if they weren`t good and interesting either.
