The most overrated game in history? I don't think so. GTA V (especially its online) is closer to that anyway.

 

Personally, I don't think that GTA San Andreas is overrated, but I do think that its protagonist, Carl Johnson, along with Big Smoke (him with most of his memes), are overrated.

 

I mean, a lot of people talk about Carl Johnson like if he was the "God Protagonist" (here we go again), when in fact the most appealing things in him were the customization options. Then you got Big Smoke, a very well written secondary antagonist and a shady character in general, at least in my opinion, yet people overuse memes of lines that were actually foreshadowing his betrayal, not just being spontaneity. I used to see him as a mysterious gangster who seems to know what Carl and Sweet don't, but now, I only see his memes whenever I read his name or look at him.

Couldn't agree more. Though I would replace Big Smoke with Tenpenny for being overrated. Yeah the Big Smoke memes are overused and aren't funny anymore, but I think Big Smoke himself is still a pretty good character all things considered.

In saying that I was never a huge fan of SA even when it was new. I respected the fact R* were trying different things, but I preferred the simplied gameplay of GTA III and VC. GTA IV's return to much more focussed gameplay is why it's currently my favourite.

Besides GTA SA and IV, I also enjoy VC, GTA VC has simple gameplay, and I think the map was unique even though the beach was oversized, I wish someday VC will get remake, I hope there will be a train like in GTA III

I think because its a much older game people I.e. San Andreas fans forget that people are allowed to have differing opinions on the game, that's why fans of San Andreas are so protective an cherish the game so much. Me personally? I don't care what people say about San Andreas, because what I think of the game goes far beyond the game itself, it represents a time in my life and a great one at that.

I was about to go on rambling about great map, mission design, story, music and the graphics, but you summarised it all very well. SA is a combination of these things, spiced up with a great chunk of nostalgia, representing a beautiful part of my life.

I think San Andreas' key to sucess has a lot to do when it was released. Not so old nor so recent, it was released short after 3d era of games and a couple of years before the HD stage started, most of the audience were kids/young people and the great majority (I include myself) cherish it so much because of the nostalgia factor despite the fact it is a masterpiece.

It's 2019, and people still believe that? The effect those games had on the industry were enormous. They were among the most technically advanced games for their time and helped to push the N64 to its limits. And thanks to their sustained popularity in the likes of speedrunning, are among the most fondly-remembered titles of the era. Far more people play the N64 Zelda games than the 2D top-down GTA titles.

 

There are thousands of games more overrated than OoT and MM. Thousands.

How about Minecraft, which has been nothing but hot air since the belated and disappointing Adventure Update all those years ago?

How about Undertale, which despite being not even old enough to go to school has already wormed its way into several #1 spots of greatest of all time lists?

How about Overwatch or Fortnite or PUBG or any of those other Aeon of Strife Styled Fortress Assault Game Going On Two Sides type games?

Or hey, how about the GTA games which made the most money and that everyone thinks are not only the best in their franchise, but among the best games period?

San Andreas is one of the best GTA's,it had bad things(unrealistic moments in storyline,big map but small cities,houses for sale with repetitive interiors,lack of unicity in some places)but was the first GTA set in a state,where you can customise cars,buy clothes,go to gym,...

SA had a lot of great things,so it's not the most overrated.

The most overrated GTA is V and it's horrible Online.

For the time SA made a big impact for a open world game. Everyone was talking about it, everyone I knew at the time. I think the game itself helped with the PS2 sales. It was just a big deal for a console game, then ended up being the best PS2 sold game to date. Probably the next gta that did the same was V. Once V hit stores the game sold like hotcakes. Definately all true. But I'd just like to say something else as well, and that is: GTA San Andreas fulfilled all the expectations it had on the table, and not just fulfilled, but actually surpased it. Surpased it very very much. Surpased the expectations probably like no game did before or after San Andreas. While GTA 5... well... I'm not sure if it completely fulfilled the expectations. Even if it did, it didn't exceed it for sure. That's the difference between 2 games. (of course, GTA 5 was gonna sell well anyways, I mean in any ways and any how, because it's GTA and it's set in Los Santos again)

SA was the last gta game that offered everything players who enjoyed open world type games. It was a like a dream come true. And no this isn't me being a fanboy or nothing. Someone like me I don't believe in that nonsense type of sh*t. I enjoy every gta for what they offer. No matter how small or big. What other gta has offered the amount of things to do in a single player game? Something R* has gone downhill regarding gta.

SA is like Skyrim that it always port to something else. I still cant believe I can play this game on my Phone. But this 14 year game is still being talk about, so it must of done something right for it to be going this strong. if this was truly just hype and not good game or step backward in some people eyes. this sections of the forums would of being dead years ago.

When it comes to things like 'overrated' I always think we have to keep a blank page since I take it as something purely subjective, no matter how good a game might be someone will always be discontent about it. No one can deny that SA it's a masterpiece and the fact that it was ahead of its time and became the best sold game on PS2, I mean the game it's probably the GTA with the more and the better content out there to date (singeplayer sake).

I played it on the original xbox when I was a lot younger, never really got into it. I was a white kid from Canada, so I couldn't really relate to "urban gangster" at the time. Haven't played it since, but with GTAIV and GTAV renewing my interest in the series, I'd definitely play a remaster.

I don't think you have to have the same color as the main character or live in the street of LA to love this game or story. San Andreas can overcome that. first time i play the game i didn't think about his race. I just played the game and enjoy it but I don't why other people can't do the same. I doubt that most people have tied to the mafia but nobody say their cant related to Claude or Tommy. It anyways that " I cant relate to urban gangster" or how can a "ghetto kid" do that. I just think its unfair for that to be a reason for san andreas to overrated ( not talking about you just in general. ) But I hope you can enjoy this classic :))

Well said. SA's hood theme didn't last long as much I want it to. Right after the events of Sweet getting locked up things shift for CJ and the story changes dramatically taking from perspectives forming an interesting story staring with Tenpenny in those woods. Still think missions like black project and green goo were random ass missions thrown in there though. Couldn't see a simple dude from the hood doing all that, but hey gta logic, lol. Race was never once an issue with CJ for me either. I mean If CJ ended being up mexican from the barrios all he needed was some tres flowers, creased chinos and a white t-shirt. Mabye even throw in a hair net, lmaoo.

 

The game has a balance between ghetto themed to action star, to taking crappy ass flying lessons to working with the triad mob while owning a casino to flying hydras and crashing them to near by buildings then having start all over again by driving miles and miles to get there

Nah those two legend of zelda games are highly overrated. I never played Undertale just remember the fallout from it being named the best game of all time on gfaqs. You're right Minecraft is highly overrated too and battleborne> Overwatch. I don't play fortnite or pubg. Overall link to the past is the best legend of Zelda imo.

Not in the least. GTA VC is way more overrated, its limed af, a trapped place with NOTHING INTERESTING TO DO, othere than missions which are so few. Vice City and 3 you cant hardly have any fun without attracting police, who just knoks you out with night stick and you are busted, every time the Haitians charge at me and I want to retaliate, cops interfere, you can ABSOLUTELY DO NOTHING IN THAT PRISON GAME, but in SA Ballas, Vagos, Rifas, Triads, you can fight with anyone you want and aezakmi does the work, you do not have to keep typing leave me alone and no police please as in VC and 3.  Stlll GTA 3 brought the 3D world so I would refrain from calling it overrated.   But white boy Tommy lovers will keep whining because SA is a better game than Vice City ever was or will be. Even the portable VCS has much to offer and Victor has a way more personality than Tommy, but racists hate him too. Still not saying I hate Vice City, hating is a different thing, I like the game, but as some acts its the best ever or whatever, I say it is the most overrated for that followed by 5, but surprisingly people do admit 5 limitations as I see here. We're seriously playing the f*cking race card as an argument here? This has nothing to f*cking do with the main character being black, and no one on this topic even mentioned CJ's race. Also, no one has even said they hated Vic for being black as well. So shut up with that race card bullsh*t! This is not about people hating the game. It's a debate on how overrated the game is. Saying something is overrated is NOT tantamount to hating it! Also, you've pretty much became a hypocrite for playing the race card by claiming people who say the game is overrated are racists and hate Vic because they're racists and then turn around to call them "white boy Tommy lovers", which makes YOU sound like the f*cking racist.

The game has so many first, any idea that it is overrated can only be claimed by children not born prior to its publication.

First where the character did not drown when ankle deep May vehicles, Helicopters without an unreasonable altitude lock. Swimming,

Silly and inane "missions" generally enjoyable once the trick is learned.  (flying,)

I would still be playing it IF Windows 10 did not refused to run it.,  And the updated version would function as did the V2.

The original v1, v2 games and v3 worked fine. But, the updated version were no long totally compatible with GamePads.
