is SA the Most overrated game in history?

Hmm..bit of a sensationalist title if I ever saw one.. anyway..

The reason people compare a 10 year old game with a GTA V is that San Andreas raised the bar. Previously we enjoyed III, Vice City (in the 3D world) and San Andreas gave us not one, but 3 cities with each city having it's own feel/weather/sky colour aesthetics. San Andreas was a title that gave us many of the things we now take for granted in a GTA such as flying a plane.

It was a land mark title. Vice City replicated the success of III and gave us some new features, new location and colour palette but San Andreas revolutionized the whole series with multiple cities, car modding, clothing that we can choose ourselves and not just preset outfits, we could get tattoos and haircuts for the first time (leading to lots of roleplaying as we could customise our character to suit our gameplay) , property purchasing was more prominent, it was the first time we could swim and explore the ocean and rivers, the collectibles for the first time had meaning related to the theme and story (tagging up turf), we could fly a plane for the first time, we could learn new fighting techniques and we could recruit other NPC's early on in the game, we could take photos for the first time, we had countryside and desert to explore for the first time, parachuting was new too as was muscle building and I consider it being set in the past a feature in itself. We also could claim back our cars at the police impound, we had girlfriends that could give us awesome gifts (if you wanted to), we could go in to a betting shop or a casino and gamble our cash away and even get in debt for the first time. We had a mountain for the first time. How many people spent hours driving RV's off mountains? It was so much fun.. Actually, it's probably the first free-roam game to give us such a mountain in such a "every day life" scenario.

So you see, San Andreas captured our imaginations like crazy back in 2004. If gave us so many "first time in a GTA" experiences that fans remember so well but a lot of us seem to forget too. It was a mammoth game at the time, in the media, amongst friends. GTA was wild an unstoppable beast back then that broke the rules, gave two fingers to society and paved the way for so many games.

This was a revolutionary post.

Maybe it's because I haven't played it in so long (before GTA V's release actually), but ever since I bought it off the marketplace a couple of days ago I haven't been able to get enough of it. So much so I'm already upto Angel Pine. I haven't enjoyed SA this much in years.:)

Then again I've been wanting to play it again after my disappointments of GTA V and my PS2 is packed away so I never got around to it. Even CJ isn't as annoying as I remember. Still no Tommy or Niko IMO, but maybe I just didn't give the guy a chance.

It's still a fun game after all these years. I feel like a legit asshole reading back at some of my posts in this thread.

I am a bit of a HD Era fanboy but San Andreas' story was definitely cool. I liked the whole gang involvement and even though it felt a bit cliche it was a fun action movie and it was interesting enough for me to complete it.

I also liked CJ, sure he is a bit of a whiner, but he was a good protagonist for San Andreas. Not the best in the series, but certainly not terrible IMO.

Not sure if I posted here before but...

I like SA, I love SA, but as much as I love it, I don't want to sleep with it.

It's a fun game and everything, but I agree that it's beyond overrated, especially the protagonist and many pointless features.

But, is it the most overrated game in history? Nah, that would be The Last of Us.

Hell no

Let's compare, at the time SA came out, the ammount of missions, character customization, side-missions, activities, different vehicles, aircrafts, features and map size was (is) huge, now V on the other hand has decent ammount of those but at modern times it could be better.

And being honest, IV loses in comparison of game-features with SA.

I know, i used to be SA hater because at the time that IV came out, everyone was hating it and complaining it waesn't a clone of SA (one of the reasons i stopped visiting this place) but turns out that CJ is a great character and San Andreas is an excellent game!

CJ maybe it's not always an impenetrable wall of steel as Claude or Tommy but just only the most human protagonist until that time, missions are fun and varied and there's a ton of things you can do, is definetly a game that deserves his praise.

I think it's overrated, but not without cause.

The storyline is great and huge but not realy my personal taste, to (ghetto)gangster like and the gangs/gangwars are a bit of a huge aspect of the game, to big for my personal intrest, on this point i prefere GTA 3\VC which feature a more "mature" storyline ( working for nightclub owners, mafia and so on)

I know you'll work for people like that later on in the game, Wu Zi Mu comes to mind, but I think the gangwars realy acentuate this game (to much)

As for the character, It's quite the same story, way to 'GANGSTA!' for my taste, but a 'good' selling point, as gangster rap was at it's primetime at release of this game if I'm correct.

So needless to say, I couldn't realy bond to CJ or his 'clique' (luckily for me there is a dozen of player mods hanging around the web)

(I don't mean anything racist with that :nervous: )

The land layout and design is amazing, especialy at released, 3 complete cities, with several districts and even outback areas like deserts, forests and mountains, san fiero was and still is my favourite spot to wreck carnage (hope to see it in a dlc for V).

As for modding the game is quite stable, so it's no surprise to see people playing it today, as there is a ton of content to add (sad enough my modded version has crashed and Ican't repair it, I just went to far :sui::angry:).

An other good point is that the game doesn't need very good hardware, so people with a standard PC can play it, which only broaden the able target group (for example people who can't play GTA IV because of lack of their computers abilities).

Visualy I think it's a shame that it was visualy restrained (regarding PS2 hardware :sarcasm: ), if you look at GTA3 and vice city on the XBOX (I shouldn't have to mention the abillity for PC), you can tell this game could be at least twice as beautifull at release :/ (even with the gigantic map).

Long story short:

It's a huge game, with low system requirements (and playable on 4! consoles (trough backward compatabillety), with a tremendous mod database, costing next to a nickle.

So I get there are a lot of people able to play it (and keep on playing it) and I think that's why it has such a ascended rating. :panic:

Why do people take this "gangster" theme so seriously? I just laugh at R*s attempts at it, it was obviously meant to be a joke and the overall excessivness made it hilarious. And you actually got a human for a character for once

He tends to get involved in lot of things not just limited, and "focused" around the gangs.

No it isn't, not even close. The Walking Dead (2012) are good contenders for that.

That's a good one

I'm not impressed by the Kubrick dolls. I wanted them to have something like the one they did for III that OP showed. I was a bit let down that they didn't go a little bigger for SA's 10th anniversary.

For the second time i say in a thread, yeah... Sa is the best of all gta games series (in all case, for me and i think the majority of you here). Rockstar need to take example on this classic gta for hope that they will doing almost exactly the same in the future even if i'm pretty sure they will don't do this... The story (missions), the city, the cars, the peds, the graphic (i know that is not the best but this is what gta sa is, right?), the gangs, the polices, the weapons...etc

In brief, the gameplay, the atmosphere of this gta which is so cool.

San Andreas isn't dramatically overrated. Despite some very annoying defaults it's a great game contrary to that heap of sh*t (at least in my opinion) of Tomb Raider Anniversary some persons nearly treated like a masterpiece.

Nope. GTAV takes the cake in that regard. GTASA may be the most ambitious PS2 era game Ive ever played and it deserves all its praise

Hello,

I was thinking about this because everywhere i go and play GTA everybody just starts saying things like "san andreas is the best game ever made" and "CJ is my favorite character", i mean i like San Andreas and CJ but damn, this sh*t gets annoying, literary its like nobody played other games, i had to complete every 3D and HD gta game to figure out which one is my favorite and i choose Vice City,

I loved San Andreas ever since i was a little kid, but damn this gets on my nerves

i kinda agree since san andreas was hella more successful than 3 and vice city (or so i think), so most people probably never played the earlier games

but eh to each their own ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It doesn't annoy me reading about how much

people love any specific GTA.

I think you are simply jealous and intolerant towards the fact that SA is highly loved and appreciated among the fans, and for some reason, anything positive about SA irks certain people, as if this game should be left out of any discussion when it comes to the best GTA in the series.

I loved San Andreas ever since i was a little kid, but damn this gets on my nerves

Then learn to ignore those things that gets on your nerves. It's best that you accept with the fact that SA is a very strong game that other GTA's simply can't overshadow or surpass in importance towards making the series of what it is today.

Vice city is a great game, and so other additions to the series, but SA is SA. It is the kind of game that still manages to attract millions of players to this day, after GTA Online.

As for the topic, I think it is a perfectly rated game. It is especially underrated when it comes to story, compared to the other overrated stories in the series.
