jimmycakes
How is his channel not copyright infringement? I thought ads could only be placed on your own videos meaning if you had music or any protected content you could not make money from it yet this kid has? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2595200/Teenager-earns-24-000-year-uploading-YouTube-videos-playing-Grand-Theft-Auto-despite-young-play-legally.html

jimmycakes
You do know most youtubers monetize their videos right? You do know that youtube restricts videos that have copyright material in them from being monetized right? You can't just upload a film and rake in the ad revenue, so I'm curious why this youtuber is able to make tens of thousands from GTA V Edited April 2, 2014 by jimmycakes

Average white guy
It's amazing how kids like him can record themselves playing video games and make money from it. People who upload videos have the option to "monetize" their videos. That means that advertisements appear when you watch the video and, if you click on them, the uploader gets some $$$$. Some people who appreciate the user's work click the ads on purpose, or even send him donations/gifts. At least that's how I understand how it works. Jimbatron
By the way at work I run a team that sells marketing analysis to various clients. Digital advertising is, for most clients, a shocking waste of money. The reason why is because of the way advertising space is traded online. No one really knows what it is worth to them (they hope it will generate sales, but they don't know for certain how many). The company that wins the bidding war to get their ads displayed is normally the one who has over-estimate the value and pays for it more than it will generate for them in sales. It's called "Winner's Curse", look it up. Very bad for the companies buying advertising space, very good for the company selling it. This is the single reason why Google is so rich - because of this model. Sooner or later, the penny will drop, and clients will stop paying so much for it. Then the revenue, for YouTube, Google and the kids will dry up, to quote R* "Like a San Andrean woman in her fifties". DFur4M
I dont know how it is with R*, but some companies say it is ok, and even have links with youtubers. Games like Call of duty is all over the internet, and it is good for the company because it promotes the game. Other games like Minecraft got to where they are because of youtubers like Syndicate. Everything was a bit complicated a few months ago, and some channels disappeared because of copyrights, so im not sure how it is working at the moment. R* could force Youtube to block any of their game's videos if they wanted to. The trade off is the free publicity, fan engagement etc. Some of you may remember, in the early days of IV, they mandated anything with a cut scene in had to go. They seem to have slackened off on this though. UltraGizmo64

I know there's very little talent in it, but some are comedians and deserve the revenue, Angry Joe streams a lot, Minx does, and a few others. But a lot of them just sit and make stupid uninformed comments on the gameplay. I can't say for this dude since I've never seen a video of his. Flexx
To make money playing video games on YouTube you have to be accepted by a gaming network. Gaming networks sign all kinds of contracts which gets them and their affiliates all kinds of clearance to use various copyright media. YouTube takes 45% of all ad revenue YouTuber makes than YouTuber is left to split what revenue generated over $100 remains at the end of the month as negotiated by contract. It actually is a bit more too it, but the answer certainly isn't just " ads ". You're welcome. Edited April 2, 2014 by Flexx

Spider-Vice
Some of you probably don't grasp what a Let's Player is. They make money off videos of games, including GTA V, because Rockstar no longer cares about footage from their games on the Internet and many, many developers do indeed like to see people doing Let's Plays. They get money via ads and likes on the videos. It is an X amount per ad watched and per like, it is usually undisclosed because it's in the contract you "sign" to monetise your videos.
