G's Ah's Posted May 20, 2014 Share Posted May 20, 2014 The car my parents owned when I was born was a mid-80's Mazda 323: It looked pretty much like this, including the paint and the louvers but without the Australian plates (because I'm from NZ). We had that until about 1997 when it decided to die and we replaced it with a 1991 Toyota Camry. We had this until it became impractical to keep repairing it. Given that NZ is plentiful in used imports from Japan (because of very lax import laws), we briefly acquired one of these: It was a 2002 Toyota Caldina, a JDM only car which was actually quite rare when we first got it. It became the family runabout for a short while until it became too expensive to fill it up at the pumps. It was sold onto Dad's new employers soon after Mum got her 2005 Suzuki Swift. It was identical to this until this year when she replaced the standard steel rims and hubcaps with aftermarket rims and performance tires. It's very economical and easy to park, but hasn't been the best car when it comes to reliability and it's a bit flimsy. So far, we've had a puncture, a broken rear bumper after someone rear ended it, a broken and continuously leaking rear window, a broken boot latch and sticky spedometer/rev counter. The paint is looking a bit tired and the lights are very badly scratched. But, seeing as we really can't afford to replace it, it's going to continue to provide cheap and much needed transport. Currently, our garage consists of a 2013 Nissan Navara, which is Dad's work ute given to him by the company he works for, Mum's Swift and my younger brother's 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer. Before buying mi Current Seat Ibiza, i went to the Suzuki dealership to check out the Swift Sport but i didn't like the price for what Suzuki offered me. Mcquiz Posted May 27, 2014 Share Posted May 27, 2014 Well might as well put on my family car history. When I was a baby my dad had this, a Ford Scorpio. Later my aunt had it and for some reason I found it very cool. Shortly after we had a Mark 2 Golf and then a 3rd gen Toyota Hiace van which was the first car I drove...at the age of six. It looked a lot like this, only blue. Many great memories with this one, like sneaking up onto a race track in the middle of the winner only for my dad to spin it at the beginning of the main straight into a snowbank. Later we shortly had a 5th or 6th gen Ford Escort followed by this. Volvo 745 which is my favourite out of all the cars our family has had. My dad used to drift this on more snowy days and it was extremely comfortable for road trips. Then when I was about 10 we got a Citreon C2. Despite having only a 1.1 litre engine and 59bhp it felt very swifty. After a few years we had to replace it because I couldn't fit in the back anymore. They decided to replace it with a brand new 1.5 Suzuki SX4. Turned out to be a very lovely car. But my grandfather had the most interesting car in the family I think, 1982 Volkswagen Passat which I remember looking a bit different. Unfortunately it got broken into and the stereo was stolen. Loved the car though. Sold it for $1800 in 2003. I remember that my uncle's friends used to have a minivan which in my blurred memories resembled to a Lumina. Maybe it was a Pontiac Trans Sport as it was sold in Europe or simply a Renault minivan. I haven't read much about Wartburgs. Were they any better than Trabants? The car I remember the most fondly was my father's 1986 Buick Century sedan, not too unlike this one albeit a darker shade of grey.
