GTA V as a shooter..

First off let me say the shooting and cover in this game is legit... It is fun and fluid.. However... does it lack compared to other rockstar games?

Im not just talking about previous gta's either..... GTA IV was nice but I am thinking more RDR and MAx Payne 3....

Now I just recently picked up MP 3 so Ima go ahead and start with RDR.

RDR had cover system and crouch. IT also had a quick pick up turn and sprint... moving my character in RDR felt fluid and real. I could do anything... pick which shoulder to look over, lean, roll in any direction and crouch when there is no cover to be had. They also had a way to implement the famed dead eye as well. I skipped gta IV so getting into GTA V i had RDR as my last Rock star game and I felt gta V felt short of RDR in the shooting department. They had all these ideas and functions already in a game of theirs implemented... Thinking RDR was the masterpiece of Rockstars games I was soon blown away when I picked up max payne 3 on sale.

Now.. I loved Payne 1 ... but.. always took me as a mega run and gun game.... so I never really went past the first one as I am more a tactical shooter. Well long story short, been digging the sh*t out of max payne 3... like.. I thought I had control in RDR,,, I can dive (bullet time or regular) in every direction... I can STAY DOWN after a dive... I can prone, crouch and switch shoulders. Aiming with a red dot scope instantly zooms in to 1st person. I can roll dive and do basically whatever my little heart desires. I f*cken love the combat physics in that game... It is off the hook.

Even the weapon selection is more realistic (this lots of you might disagree on so Ill keep it off my main point but I would love to have all my weapons at my safe house, then, when going out, have to choose 1 combat rifle or sniper or support weapon or shotgun... then 2 hand weapons... whether AP pistol, combat pistol, micro smg, ect.... when you go out into the field.)

Anyways, regardless of the weapon selection as many of you prolly enjoy having every weapon known to man at your finger tips... the whole shooting system seems to be BEHIND their other games. Like.. you cant dive, crouch, prone, crawl, duel wield, or even switch shooting shoulders. The only gun that zooms in on a scope is the sniper rifle and the sneak option is completely useless when it could have included prone and crouch as well. Like ... tap button to crouch... while crouched you sneak.... hold button to prone... while prone you are extra quiet....

I even had situation in max payne where I dove back, landed, stayed down shot a guy charging me while I was on the ground, slowly crawled to my feet, then dove out of the way again behind some cover.... I would have died 10 times over in GTA V just because I was a good 10 feet from any cover and the ledge defending me only protected me because of the angle I was at.

Anyways... Im not bombing GTA V... its not max payne 3.... I didnt expect it to be... however... Max Payne 3 has such superior shooting options that it is questionable that it is even from the same people. (I know max payne 1 was just produced by Rock Star and made by someone else, however 3, to my understanding... is ALL ROCKSTAR... so they had the scripting and ability to allow Micheal to say.. crouch, go prone, look over his other shoulder, even dive perhaps... it was all there... but they were like naahhh... ya'll cant get down unless there is some sh*t that is of suitable surface for you to take cover behind.... like... in a game with automatic weapons keeping your head down is like MOST important... and they force us to run everywhere.....

Anyways.. I kno GTA is about flying, landing, racing, escaping cop chases, ect.. but.. the gun aspect is like.. a big aspect lol... kinda confused as to why it lacks compared to some of their other games.

Anyone else agree?

GTA0 is a twitch shooter and nothing more. Be fast or be dead. Shoot every white dot in range before they shoot you. Complicated game. :/

RDR did feel a bit more responsive in terms of movements but the cover system in GTA V is better for sure. I'm reminded of the Buffalo Rifle... yea lemme just peak out here and shoot you... ohh wait i have to remain out in the open while i reload -_-. Gun play just feels better in V as in it's more stable and smooth and i feel like range doesn't effect bullet travel like it did in RDR which i didn't like. Never played a Max Payne so no comment there.

Not true at all, not true at all. If you act fast and run around on the fly, you die. You have to consider all angles what with all the different surrounding and such. He who takes his time, survives. There are those complete cluster f*ck fight out in the open however, those are just who can time the role right. Then it just turns into the annoying as all hell roll fests like RDR SMH.

Something about RDR was incredibly satisfying. GTAV is close, but somehow RDR was just slightly improved I'd say. I've seen Let's Plays of RDR where people just bitch endlessly about how Marston moved but I had no problem with it. People never agree on anything. Above poster is correct though in how things like the buffalo rifle prove RDR wasn't without flaws though. Not sure which I like more. Maybe RDR by a hair.

Sure whatever you say....

???

Like like really?

Look.. I am basically saying there were more options in RDR and MAx Payne 3.... like switching shoulders is sooo nice in Max payne 3.. I would love it in GTA V... and CROUCH... this is like the single most frustrating thing about GTA V... if it werent such a badass game the inability to crouch would be game breaking for me... and IS under lots of circumstances... I do NOT take pvp seriously at all because I cant crouch... like... prone is one thing.. i can live without prone... it would be nice... but who the f*ck JUST stands there with a sniper rifle... why cant I lay down, or atleast crouch.... like ok maybe some people stand with a sniper rifle... but wouldn't it be nice to crouch or prone up in a corner somewhere on a roof top with your sniper rifle???

Anyways... I am basically focusing on the limitation of your character in GTA V over the freedom you had with other rockstar games... its obvious.. i guess i am just stumped at why... WHY must my character have stiff knees...

Taking cover in general is of course necessary as opposed to running around in the middle of the street, firing full frontal. And when you are playing against AI, yes, taking cover and getting in a good position is fine and you can win even against large numbers, until they start spawning behind you like in the higher waves of survival.

But in PvP, taking cover is just delaying death for a few more seconds - you will get sniped in the 1 inch of hitbox protruding above the wall or at the edge of cover, or you will get sticky-bombed, or one of the other assholes in the session will get you from behind a block away.

In the free-roam constant streetfights, any time I hesitate in cover, even for a couple or seconds, to determine if a white dot is one of my friends (not a formal friend, just someone who has not shot me earlier in the session when they had the chance), one of the other assholes will immediately kill me, every time. And as soon as you do decide to aim and fire, you are exposed, and then it's just a question of tiny fractions of a second (and having high level health of course) whether you die, or the other white dot dies. Both firing until the first one dies.

It's a twitch game. Actually I realize that statement is a bit hyperbolic, but essentially its true.

I've agreed with parts of all the above posts. RDR was an amazing game with fantastic atmosphere. You really felt like you were travelling through untamed wilderness. I didn't find the shooting physics THAT much better than gta 5 though.

Max Payne 3 had the best gunplay ever, but that, and a cracking storyline were it, it didn't have the breadth of gta.

I guess you can't have it all at once!

I would love to see this list implemented in the game to make it more real/shooter.

It will make GTA Online the game it should have been.

The game would also be a lot more fair to low level players, missions would be harder and you get payed accordingly.

Crews will have a real meaning and working together with your crew will give you awards in Freeroam as in DM/TDM/LTS and in Missions.

Special abilities:  :rampage:

Every ability is unlocked for everyone; only you can only have one active at a time.

You can switch the ability in your bedroom.

Default is slow down time while driving

special abilities:

- Slow down time while driving (can be switched off in races)

- Rage mode (can be switched off in missions/DM/etc.)

- Bullettime (can be switched off in missions/DM/etc.)

Slow down time will work as bullettime in MP3 only with cars...

Ragemode will work as Bullshark Testosterone. however it will only fill as you get more kills (npc's included)

Bullettime will work same as MP3 and it will fill as you get more kills to Players as NPC's.

As for carrying weapons:

- You can carry 2 side arms; 1 melee and 2 main weapons.

- Side arms are Pistols/SMG's

- Main weapons are MG's, AR, Snipers, shotgun. (you can carry the grenade launcher as a main weapon too)

- melee is, well, melee xD

if you want to switch weapons you can call up Packie or someone else/ which will have a van with weapons like in GTA IV/EFLC. (nostalgia :D)

You can also switch weapons at Ammunation or your house.

Some sidearms can be Dual wielded but at the cost of -40% accuracy and +120% reload time.

think of Pistols or Uzi. :)

you can pick up other weapons; but then you have to drop one in you inventory.

Ammunition will work differently:

after you maxed out your ammunition (9999) you can buy more maximum Ammunition (+180 ammo for weapon category) for $5.000 each upgrade :D

Heavy weapons can be called in at Merryweather; the crate is only to be opened by you. You can buy an ammo drop for these weapons at Merryweather consultancy for the price which you now have to pay at Ammunation. You have to trade this weapon for one of your main weapons. When you leave the session/or no ammo you will drop the weapon.

Special weapons can be purchased at Ammunation/vans and you can take 3 of each with you. This can be upgraded at Ammunation for $15.000 a upgrade per special weapon.

Armor:

Armor will work more as a real armor. example

Super Light armor will absorb 5 bullets (not heavy/special)

Super Heavy armor will absorb 50 bullets (maybe even a blast of a grenade)

You can also purchase helmets for same reason. :miranda:

How more armor you have; how slower you will move.

For example; Super heavy armor will slow you down 50% while no armor will give you a boost of 20% in sprint.

Extra Features:

Other features which would need to be implemented  :

- Crouch should be more like crouching instead of sneaking.

- Prone would be enabled when you hold Crouch.

- Crew members can't be harmed (freeroam like in TDM and MP3)

- Anti tank weapon/mines

- Option in freeroam to have no blimps on minimap for everyone (like in MP3).

- red dot sights will zoom in like snipers (MP3 feature)

- Nitro can be added to cars (can be refilled at tank stations for a small fee)

- buy health packs at ammunation/stores,

- small (25% health refill)

- medium (50% health refill)

- large (100% health refill)

CREWS:

The leader of the crew and his/her commissioners can create standard crew load outs :karmaeater: .

The leader of the crew can create up to 5 crew outfits with new unlocks each time he/she levels up in the crew.

unlocks can consist of:

- new armor colors for your crew

- clothing for your crew

- multiple crew colors to leaders choosing.

- Standard load outs/armors for DM/TDM/LTS/Missions for crew members to choose from.

when crew members wear at least 2 items of the outfit they get a buffer of 20% health

If crew members wear at least 4 items of the outfit they also get 20% more damage.

If crew members have 2 or more crew vehicles (chosen by leader) they get a speed boost of 20% while sprinting and cars, freeroam only, will be 20% faster and have 20% better handling.

Mission changes: :die:

Survivals will get more waves; harder enemies like juggernauts. Payout will be way higher

Police will use riotshields/ explosives.

Police will call in help of army at a whole new 6th star.

New units in police like Riotshield squads, juggernauts and IAA/FBI special units.

Why would this work:

- low levels would stand a real chance against high level players. Headshots are always deadly.

- races will get an extra dimension

- Shooting system will be much more dynamic. And players can now call back up from Merryweather to gain advantage by using special weapons etc.

- DM/TDM will be revised and much more awesome!

- You have to think twice which weapons you want to take with you before you leave your apartment. This will give battles a whole new dimension; because everyone uses their own play style.

- Can create load outs like in MP3 and other shooters.

- Money will have meaning again, missions will be more challenging and heists will be harder; but the rewards can now be truly used.

- Crews finally affect gameplay.

- Working together is advised and stimulated.

- Harder, funnier missions with according pay outs!

TL;DR:

Dynamic missions, revised battle system, quality battles and strategy is important. Crews have meaning; and races/battles will have an extra dimension. Also money will have meaning even when you have millions!

please let me know what you think about this; because I will mail this to R* :r*:

After RDR and Max Payne 3 I would expect the best shooting system ever in any R* game to be in V.But,no.

The gun combat mechanics in GTA V sucks some pretty bad balls, it leaves a whole lot to be desired.

it was the wild west most of the gunfights happened in open areas so obviously no cover to take

I ran around for hours just hunting animals in RDR, using the different rifles. If the shooting would have felt like GTA V I probably would haven't spent half as long playing it. It just seemed more realistic or fluent. It's hard to explain but I agree OP.

Sir Michael

The mechanics do suck in this game... it's all too slow to be a smooth third person shooter, and that's one of the most important aspects of GTA. Aiming has a delay of speed when you start turning in certain direction instead of an instant snap like most shooters use. The characters move too slow too.

This game seems like it's built for Auto-Lock because free-aim feels awkward from the slowness combined with the frame-rate.

I'm a big fan of both the Gta series and the Max Payne series and they're both some of my all time favorite game series for various reasons. I think that gta 5's shooting was a step up from 4's and from RDR(granted not by much) but was definitely a step down from MP 3. I think they should have kept a similar movement speed in this game as they had in that one and maybe it's just me but the shooting it self felt more fluid. It felt a lot more like I had the ability to really choose which arm I was choosing to reach out and touch someone with if you get what I mean. And I really think it would have been a benefit and a game changed to GTA 5 if they had brought over bullet time and shoot dodging but that is only my opinion.
