If it's spammy, it gets hidden,

At the risk of earning a warning

And if until such time has bidden

I see such a post returning

The temporary bans will start flowing

And the ghetto jesuses, ephermeral stars, universe twisters, and leggy hairy men of all creeds

Shall entertain us no longer.

 

Please try to keep your PPD lower than Buzzfeed; but at the very least do not post something that you think your friendly neighborhood staff would consider to be, colloquially, a 'sh*t post'. Like that poem I just subjected you to... for instance.

 

We will always keep genchat relatively 'unmoderated' - but this is to foster discussion, not chatroom antics. We have an IRC for that. 'So,' you may ask, 'just what is spam, Mr Otter? Can you explain it to me? Can I run my fingers through your hair?' Well, yes, obviously. Put on your gloves.

 

Spam is contextual!

 

The obvious spam is advertising or porn. This doesn't require much explanation. Report it and move on.

 

In its most obnoxious form, it is a single word post, or a single image post. More frustrating yet are these that also include a quote train. Forget banning, I've put demonic curses on a few of these. I dabble in CthuluCorps street magic. Don't ask, it's a new hipster thing.

 

A simple meme, either madlib or carbon copy - eg, '10/10 would read again' - is punishable by death in some smaller European countries. We're a little more liberal around here, but don't push it.

 

In a thread with a dedicated purpose - let's pluck something from thin air here to illustrate... How about the 'member pictures' thread - anything that isn't a photo of yourself is considered spam. The odd aside is admissible, but it's not cool to start treating it like the comments section on PornHub. This goes for any other dedicated thread - if Slamman starts a topic about laserdiscs and some goof comes in and starts chatting about sports scores, or obscure TVGuide interview references, then it's off topic and pretty much just spammy spam spam.

We want to let you guys have fun and express yourselves but we can't have threads devolve into chatty circlejerks at the expense of everyone else's enjoyment. So I'm taking the massive risk of leaving this thread unlocked before going to bed so we can all have a civil discussion about it without me actually being here. Do you find the spam annoying? Do you think we need more or less moderation around here, or other areas of the board? Are mountain lions the opposite of prairie dogs?
