Facebook took over Oculus VR for 1.6 billion dollar.
Source (with other sources):

Obviously someone has seen it coming a month ago.
Some guy at reddit had a friend working in the same building as Oculus VR. He saw Mark Zuckerberg taking the elevator up to the OculusVR floor.

"Your weapon is sponsored by clickandbuy.com. Your weapon is and will stay disabled untill you click like!".
"Your auto-saved head-shot replay has just been liked by your grandmother Betsy [picture of ur grandma here]".

But seriously guys... the backers of what was one of the most successful kickstarter project have just been royally fooked.

They're also planning on reworking the hardware, and making the UI more Facebookey

According to a person involved in the deal who was not allowed to speak publicly because he was not authorized by either company, Facebook eventually plans to redesign the Oculus hardware and rebrand it with a Facebook interface and logo.

Such a f*cking shame.

Wonder what FB will do with it?

Getting more behavioral data from their users.

It's all about that information baby!

To hell with it. This is a betrayal of everyone who supported them through Kickstarter. Nice knowing you, Oculus.

f*cking hell...

I've not tried the Oculus Rift yet but I was quite keen to have a go. I knew they were having some financial difficulties but I didn't see this coming. I f*cking despise Facebook and everything about it.

The whole reason I want VR goggles is so I can be as fully immersed in a game as possible - at least until someone invents the matrix or a holodeck, not so ZuckerBerk can beam adverts directly into my eyes.

Oh well, I guess Project Morpheus it is then.

Everyone got their rewards from Kickstarter, there's nothing wrong here. Just because it barely worked and almost nothing was designed to work with it, doesn't mean they didn't deliver.

And why do you people think Oculus will be worse off with billions of dollars behind it, instead of two nerds building it in a garage with about hundred dollars a week to spend?

Either way Sony will be much better off, considering they actually had enough money since development.

I never had any investment in the device, however I felt it would be a great tool for indie developers and some great PC gaming. However, I consider Facebook and Call of Duty two key components that were instrumental in the destruction of the way I used to love the internet and gaming. What is left is a horrible hell that I don't want any part of anymore.

Though their purchase doesn't have to technically have any association with the device. I can't help but see it used for sh*tty facebook games and let the tech be squandered and whored out for their own purposes. But that probably won't happen. But my hatred for Facebook drives my disgust for the product now. Though I have no investment or care for it, it kind of makes me sick to think about it. That may not make any logical sense.

It is like when Globogym tried to aquire Average Joe's Gym. It is just a horrible thing to let happen.

My boss told me about this. I was pretty shocked. I feel for the backers I'd be pissed if I had invested money into building that company up only for it to sell out to someone it does seem sort of shady.

In business terms it makes perfect sense though, but that doesn't mean it's in the best interest of consumers. For me personally I was going to pick up a retail version when they finally come out but now I'm not so sure until I know what's actually going on with the company.

I'm sorry, but does kickstarter entitle you to make any business decisions or limit the financial future of a company? No.

I've spoken about this at length in the Morpheus topic, but some key points:

- facebook will be great for getting this technology noticed and therefore opening up the field for developers

- most hatred for facebook is incredibly misguided; the only thing 'creepy' about it is companies like Zynga that exploit it.

- two billion dollars is wayyyyyyy more than this company is worth, especially considering Sony's recent announcement. Zuck is insane. They had one option - cut and run - and I'd argue to do otherwise would actually be morally reprehensible.

Finally, a note on 'betraying' kickstarter 'investors'. Kickstarter is not an investment platform. You are giving your money in exchange for perks. When you give money, you no longer have control over it, and you have f*ck all to complain about in the end.

Notch calls Facebook 'creepy' but how tight in bed with Microsoft and Apple is he? It's frustrating when industry leaders throw mud like this, especially when it's drawing a line in the sand and forcing other developers to show their hands politically. That is what's truly creepy, my friends.

To mention the crazy billionaire argument again: zuckerberg just bought a Gaming Peripheral for two billion dollars. One without any significant patents and now with some serious competition. Unless there's some secret plan, this feels like one of the last billion dollar tech valuations we'll see in a while, and congratulations to Oculus for the well deserved payday.

I've still got hopes for purchasing the Oculus Rift (whenever the retail edition will release) and I will remain to for the time being, but if Mark Zuckerberg and the rest make up some 'plan' and somehow completely screws it up - I won't have any thought in buying it.

Yeah that's why they are changing the hardware, right? This isn't going to be a gaming headset anymore, facebook is a f*ck up of a program. Mark Zuckerberg is a massive hypocrite, FB sends all your data to third parties including the government, whereas in the TC it says it doesn't. So stop kissing their ass ffs, unless you are one of them.

If you don't know anything about facebook, then do some f*cking research. I feel sorry for you if you have a FB account, have fun been spied on.

I'm pretty sure Zuckerberg is a front man for the New World Order. He also might be a shapeshifter. I'm not joking. Totally serious. Look it up online. You will see.

Also Facebook was a ploy by the New World Order to "connect us all". So they can track you all better and to see what you like and dislike. They will find any way nessicary to try and get an upper hand. They have been doing it since 1776.

Franklin, I suggest you reread what I posted before you start slinging fanboy sh*t at me. I can barely tolerate your sh*tty attitude with other members... Don't direct it at me.

I'm sorry if you think you haven't been spied on, Facebook or otherwise. ;)

I have just read through the initial kickstarter campaign no where did it mention selling the company to the first highest bidder. In actual fact they talk of taking it all the way through to a consumer product.

All though like you say otter you don't have a say once your money has gone but personally you still do have a vested interest in the company and product whether you have properly invested or just donated/pledged. And you want to know that your money has been well utilised and at the moment it appears they just squandered it all to build a company and then sell out before the project is completed.

If there's one thing I think we can all agree on they certainly changed the way we will play games "farmville"

Although I'm not one for trusting Facebook, I like how they've been emphasising how the product will be pretty much untouched right up and over the consumer release, then they will start focusing it on other uses.

As I always say with anything, let's just see how this pans out. If Facebook does what they've said they will do, you have nothing to worry about, and everything to be optimistic about - a huge cash injection, wider audience...

But John Carmack is technically working for Facebook now. Huh.

You make it sound like it's a good thing. If you don't want your freedom, no one cares. I want my freedom and I don't want to be treated like a suspect and literally billions of other people think the same.

The good thing is that cool people were given 2 billion dollars. That was pretty clear in what I posted.

Anything else is conspiracy theory bullsh*t mudslinging that you're trying to pin on me. Keep it to yourself.

The only thing that really bothers me about Facebook is how moderators censor posts, groups, or pages for hate speech or other similar offenses when enough people report them, but they really have no reason to do that. Of course, this is a problem with other services as well, like YouTube, but it's still a big deal to many people.

Does it really say that? I doubt it. They would face legal action if it did.

Stop using Facebook then. It's that simple.

I've stopped using it. Oh and it does say that in the TC, don't be a fool. I always read the TC when I sign up. Yet no legal action is being taken against them, since it's used as a spying hub by the Government.

@Otter: I am not pinning anything on you. And it's not a conspiracy, if you think spying doesn't exist, you don't even live in the real world. It's a wide known fact that we are being spied on as if we are suspects. I don't think you watch the news.

Anyway, I'm just complaining that FB will f*ck it up. That's it. I mean they've openly said it they are going to use it for social integration.

Hm, I've been looking at what people have been saying on the internet, and if Facebook doesn't kill the rift, then what seemingly is a large backlash will. They have Notch being negative about it, and he's...well...the creator of Minecraft, so I doubt that fanbase will ignore what he says.

This will surely be interesting, seems like there's a few people sucking up to Sony's morpheus.

No that's pure bullsh*t. If you really believe that, you are part of the dumb sheeple. Only on rare occasions the data is needed from people who have contact with the suspect as a friend or whatever is related to the situation.

It's an excuse for the government to control the people in the country. Nothing less. They do not have the right to give away personal data like that, especially since the TC clearly states they won't do that. Yeah, hypocritical f*ckers.

That's all fine. But you're forgetting something. If it weren't for the successful Kickstarter, Oculus wouldn't have gotten anywhere. And now those same developers who asked for regular people to donate to their cause sold out for another cause. So while I agree that Oculus guys have the right to sell out to whomever they want, I also think that Kickstarter backers have every right to be pissed and to ask for their money back. "Perks" weren't the reason most people donated their money for the Oculus. That is just an incentive to donate more. The real reason was a vision of a VR gaming headset. One that users will be able to mod and hack. I seriously doubt that vision will come to life after this.

Actually it is a known fact that Facebook owns any information you submit to their website and this is covered in the terms of use. This is clearly evidenced by the fact that you cannot permanently delete your profile once you make one. It can be reinstated at any time. Edited by Criѕtian
