We know that a lot of you want to get your hands on a PS3 emulator. Well, that day may come sooner than expected, as a team of developers is currently working on a PS3 emulator that is able to boot a commercial game. In the realm of emulation land, this is huge. Yes, this is laggy and buggy but the fact that an emulator can boot a commercial PS3 game is HUGE. The name of the emulator is RPCS3 and you can view two videos from it running a commercial game below. Enjoy.

Looks like it came sooner than expected. This is great news. I can only imagine that at the rate PC technology is evolving, this will be running near full speed in a few years.

Now where's that PS4 emulator? :D

Edit: Here's another video the author posted.

Awesome.

Though it all depends on what rig you will need to run the damn thing. As I am pretty sure PCSX2 are pretty CPU heavy. I have MGS4 that I bought years ago but never bought the PS3 to play it, it would be awesome playing that with a 360 controller setup on the PC. That is, if this actually functions correctly.

It also would be good if they could get this running as an app on the PS4. Surely it cant be that hard. That solves the back compatibility issues.

Just a quick note - let's keep the discussion about commercial titles here.

Umm... where exactly?

In a few years, if this things actually works well with all PS3 games, then it may just happen that PC gamers will be able to play the PS3 exclusives in a few years.

I meant no warez or ISO talk as per forum rules, OK?

They won't be able to add it to the PS4, it is too hard, almost impossible since both architectures are different. Even with PC, they still haven't been able to do an emulator, until this was posted. It still isn't finished since it's buggy and generally incomplete.

However Sony are implementing a service called PS Now which will reintroduce PS3 games on the PS4 (aka GaiKai). There was rumours that a proper BC might be coming for PS1/2 games. With the PS3 it's different.

That's badass.

Man.. I remember trying to get Def Jam: Fight for New York running with stable FPS using the PCSX2. It's crazy to see a more modern console being made into an emulator. Maybe several years down the line, people will be emulating GTA V, haha.

You're going to need a damn near super computer to run I bet. CPU wise you'll need a high end quad core. Since last gen console processors were tri core. There's the one main processors, and six "mini CPUs". This will be amazing when they get it to run the games we want to play.

The PS4 has an octa-core processor, so it might be able to squeeze backwards compatibility in, but it's too much work. The CPU I think is weak for it. So no point in putting effort for the PS4, but I guess PS Now (GaiKai) is the solution for PS3 games.

If only they could get BC for ps1/2 games and remaster them in proper HD 1080p.

Is there an Xbox360 one ? wouldn't making an Xbox360 emulator be easier since its from Microsoft and can fit better in windows ?

The PCSX2 still runs like sh*t on my new PC (either very choppy, or choppy when there's lots of sh*t going on). I can't imagine what kind of PC you need to play anything on the PCSX3.

It would since the X360 hardware isn't as complicated as the PS3's hardware is. But I'm not sure if there is one for PC right now.

Not at all , you just have to adjust the config for each game , Metal Gear Solid 3 for example runs smoothly , I've just finished it for the second time on my pc , plus it looks nicer

If I am correct, PS Now will eventually have ps2 and ps1 games as well. Not sure if they will ever do emulated versions of those on the ps4, like they do with ps3.

I mean, when you play a ps1 or ps2 game on your ps3, it is an "emulated" version, right? Unless you stick the disc in there :p. Which only the first model of the ps3 allows you to play from.

There were rumors that Sony was developing their own emulator for PS1 and PS2 games. It would also up the textures to 1080p instead of upscaling the whole game.

I'll be watching the development of this emulator like with PPSSPP on Android.

I'm definitely positive within the next couple years they'll get some great results.

I would say it's close to confirmed.

I saw this today. The guy is pretty close to Sony and knows some stuff internally. This is going to be awesome! Discs might be able to be used too!

Is it legit? It seems fishy with those suprisingly low system requirements.

No its fake

The Xbox 360 emulator that guy posted?

Yeah it's fake. Here's a real one that's being worked on by the Xenia Project: https://github.com/benvanik/xenia

And here's the link to RPCS3's github: https://github.com/DHrpcs3/rpcs3

Any other 7th gen console emulator out there I would consider a fake apart from these 2.

The PS3 emulator however is further along than the Xbox 360 emulator. Which is surprising considering the hardware of the PS3.

  • 10 months later...

So does anyone remember this?

Well it has made a lot of progress over the months and is now able to load up the Watch Dogs and Far Cry 3 intro and games like Terraria are half playable.

I find it pretty amazing how far this has come.

Still, must have been a f*cking nightmare doing the coding.

Anyone seriously expecting it running at full speed within the next 5 years is pretty delusional.

Most games don't even run at full speed on PS3 so... yeah.

let me know when RDR, Heavy Rain & The Last Of Us are playable on this thing...other than that there's no need for it. at least to me...

As expected the emulator comes years after the console's release, and it'll be a bit longer for it to be remotely playable, but they are making a lot of progress.

Maybe you won't be able to play AAA games at full speed within the next 5 years, but smaller indie games like Journey might be possible. Who knows.

Even a beastly system with 5960X is still choking on running PS2 games, so I think we're a very, very long way to go to even manage to run GTA V PS3 on PC.

Even indies are quite taxing thanks to its exclusive system calls that aren't found on traditional x86.
