On a side note, anyone remember the Diet Coke adverts from not too long ago? The advert features a muscular type manicured bloke taking his tight and sweaty t-shirt off to reveal muscle implants a well toned body achieved through hours of hard toil. Cut to some women who happen to be partaking of the aforementioned beveridge whilst leering rather excitedly at this bloke. Now if that had been a woman taking here top off to be leered at in an exited fashion by some blokes, there would be public outcry! That is sexism.

and you use a advertisement campaign, that portrays young female professionals as hory sluts who forget all their professionalism the second a sweating soft drink delivery guy shows up, as an example for sexism from which men suffer. a campaign notabene thought up by men, a campaign that shows women react in a typically masculine way to an attractive member of the other sex, you just show that you have no clue of what you are talking about. you feel attacked when some men are described as sexist pigs, and feel the need to relativize male sexism, which you do by the use of an ever so unfitting example. even just the fact that you personally feel attacked already reveals so much about you, you'd slap yourself silly for that post if you'd understand how much it does.

I don't even get mad at comments like this anymore because I know someone who would've been on the fence otherwise will read them and decide that throwing his lot in with people calling women "whore" for being upset at rape threats just feels too icky and gross. Two months I reported on the escalation of sexism in GTA Online. Specifically being targeted with messages like rape threats, misogynstic slurs etc

Needless to say it hasn't abated and despite great reluctance I've been forced to create a new PSN and character.

 

I feel victimised by this whole ordeal, and would really advise against using a PSN name that indicates you're a woman.

I can guarantee there will be posters who trivialise my predicament, but just try to empathise for a minute.

I've been engulfed with vitriolic message within the in game messaging system calling me named like b**** c**** and to my dismay have even been getting rape messages.

When one of your best forms of entertainment is gaming, and guys are trying to impede that enjoyment it's tremendously annoying.

I don't know why or what has precipitated this escalation in abuse since December, I've not changed anything.

Is it that there has been a sudden influx of young gamers? Maybe their hormones are acting up or something?

Either way, it's inexcusable and I hope these children stop acting like sophomoric little twerps.

Why is the idea of girls playing games so perturbing to some guys? We're not threatening your masculinity!

 

Anyway, lastly I wanted to say a special thanks to the guys who called out some of these users on Mic, and stood up to this odious behaviour.

A month or two ago I said I thought sexism was rife in the gaming culture, but I actually have recanted. I just think it's the chauvinists who tend to be vociferous so it gives the misleading impression that sexism is more widespread than it actually is. But it is essential that the good guys stand up and let the misogynists know this behaviour is indefensible. That's how you truly show a woman you care. Be welcoming to women in gaming and don't presume it's a facade for attention. Nothing more annoying.

 

 

 

 

Frankly, I get your point and everything but it's not essential at all that the "good guys" defend you. You should stand up for yourself and not count on other people to stand up for you, it's needy and a bit sad. When I get harrassed I mute/block.

 

It will always be the younger crowd who does this, because after the feminization of the modern world, the only place they feel safe to experience puberty away from girls and mothers is in a GTA game. More mature men learned to stop giving a f*ck or simply shrug off feminism and smirk at the implicit maternization of the contemporary media and we get along with women just fine and enjoy their company.

 

It's funny, but sad at the same time because of what happens when these virgins cross path with another girl in a video game : Outburst of insecurity and anger.

 

With that said and with all due respect, I respect a woman who stands up for herself and not complain and wait for the "good guys" to defend her. I'm not saying argue with 10 year old virgins, I'm saying call them out or mute their mic like other people do.

 

Actually, when I hear a guy going off on a woman in a lobby or whatever, I mute him too cause it makes me cringe to hear it and I advise you to do the same.

I'm sure it's been said already, but it seems so painfully obvious. Don't use your mic around strangers. Wouldn't that solve your problem? You can always join a crew for girls as well. Sorry this is happening to you. There is no excuse and or justification. Either does injustice to the problem. Personally I think a report of this type of abuse backed up with proof to both R* and/or PSN/XBL should get the abuser a one years permaban to their IP address (second report gets you a permanent ban to your IP). Inaction makes you complicit, and that goes for everyone including other players in a lobby where this sh*t is going on. If you at the very least don't speak up and drowned out the abusive speech you are a POS.

But it's a troll thread. A girl named MrWuggy makes this thread and then never even comes back to post in it a single time. Claims to have received tons of sexist and rape messages out of the blue. My girlfriend plays this game all the time, even uses a mic sometimes, and has never received a single hateful/sexist message, does receive tons of friend requests though. She doesn't get senselessly beaten in free roam for being a girl, if anything she can be around other white dots a lot of the time w/o passive mode and not even be killed. Me on my character if I see a white dot coming for me it's shoot first ask questions later because in all likelihood they are trying to kill me.

 

I'm not trying to trivialize sexism or rape or whatever, or say that just because it doesn't happen to someone I know it's not happening, just that this whole thread is super sketchy.

All the while they cheat on their spouses while deployed, being passed around like a hot potato amongst the men.
