GTA Online on Xbox Live Silver

I've never played GTA Online until this weekend. Suddenly the loading screen gave me an option between single player and online. I've been having a blast beating n00bs in my Elegy in races. How is it possible that I can play GTA Online with an Xbox Live Silver account?
