So, Im getting into PC gaming more and more and Im going to get either Fallout or STALKER.

I played FO3 on the 360 already, but was bored a bit too quick. Gun Mechanics sucked big time.

I havent played New Vegas yet, neither a STALKER game.

I watched a couple of Call of Pripyat Videos and I gotta say, that STALKER looks A LOT better than fallout, gameplay-wise.

So anybody who played any of the 3 Stalker games and/or New Vegas, who can tell me their opinion on both?

Which is better?

I know, they have their own strengths, but they have similar setting and both are RPG/Shooters. STALKER is less of an RPG than FO, but has way better mechanics.

I love Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but the atmosphere of STALKER is second to none. I have great memories staying up late and play Call of Pripyat.

Can't recall how many times that game has made me jump from my seat. I would highly advise you to get STALKER. This is coming from someone that's a fan of both games and played the hell out of them (ALL of them).

Also to be honest, STALKER and Fallout don't really share anything in common. You'll realize that once you play it c:

I was going for CoP if I choose STALKER. Do I have to play the first 2 Games zo get the Story or do I need background knowledge? ( main Game and the other SA DLC )

No you don't need to play or know anything about the other 2 games to get the story. But if you want to know more about the background of the game (I know you'll have questions) then the wiki is a great place to look. http://stalker.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

You can read that for background knowledge if you so please, but it's not a necessitiy

can you stealth kill enemys?

I know that sneaking is in. There is even a noise bar, but can you like kill them with a single shot in the head with a silenced weapon without other enemys noticing you?

Nah. They'll aggro when you do.

I haven't played STALKER much, only played a little of Shadow Of Chernobyl, but it's more immersive, far more dangerous than the wasteland in the Fallout games, and has a nice soundtrack. Fallout is for when you want some 'sick' fun.

Nevermind.

Im going to use the smrter 0.41 mod (0.45 never was released...)

Weapon addon for it (gives the weapons more animations)

Options pack for smrter

And "better weapons" mod for more realistic weapon behavior.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is fun, but it can be buggy at times. I crouched in a pipe and quicksaved. Now whenever I load it up, I'm stuck through the pipe.

Those are some good mods :D

I haven't really messed around with mods though, except for Misery that one time...

THAT was definitely an experience all on its own.

Fallout 3 was the best game I ever played and never heard of stalker, but I'll try it out if its on steam.

All 3 games are on Steam. They're PC only titles and not very well known at that, so it's not surprising you've never heard of it.

Some of the devs involved with the series started another studio called 4A, which created the Metro titles. Another group of the same studio [GSC btw] started a different studio after it was closed, and is making a free to play FPS MMO shooter called Survarium.

I've played all 3 STALKER games, and when it comes to atmosphere, the only other game I can think of that competes is Dark Souls.

I love Fallout, but I can't really think of any way to compare the two. They're different from each other in many many ways.

I played Metro 2033 recently when it was for free on XBL. Its pretty awesome. I wish they would make an Open World Game in this series.

On Topic:

since STALKER is not nearly as famous as Fallout, its quite interessting that people on here seem to like Stalker more than Fallout :D

this is tough.

Stalker might be a little better than F3/NV.

but I think F3/NV goes a lot further than Stalker because the modding community is larger and more active.

Both games are amazing in its own right.

For STALKER, remember to install the mods (that add up with several significant gameplay tweaks and patches).

For just about sick and frustrating (but awesome challenge and improved graphics with atmosphere) try MISERY Mod that just released the final version 2.1. I am out of words to explain how amazing it makes the Call of Pripyat.

For Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Check out NEXUS for full list of outstanding mods. BUT, make sure about the compatibility issues beforehand by checking the 'Read Me'.

In short,

STALKER (with Mods) = Excellent atmosphere + Incredible AI + High difficulty + Varied Campaign

F3/F:NV = Great amount of quests + Interesting Missions + Multiple ways to play + Lots of Mods

The STALKER modding community is quite small and you won't find much frequent updates compared to F3/F:NV that have more active community overall.

I would only advise trying Misery AFTER you completed the game and are comfortable with it.

I've played Call of Pripyat many times, but when I tried Misery for the first time, it was like playing a whole different game. Lmao.

It's hard, it's gruesome, and if you don't know what you're doing, you will get your ass kicked.

That's what I love about STALKER. Fallout 3 and NV are way too easy. Too much hand holding.

Recently I had NV installed with a lot of mods. It was fun, but within 8 hours of play I was already killing everything with 1-2 shots.

In the end I agree with with what Osho said. Go for STALKER, you won't regret it.

You'll see how different it is from Fallout.

I have never played stalker so I can't comment.

However both fallout games have a f*cking gigantic following in terms of mods. Anything you can think of. And if your PC is up to at least 2008 standards, you should be able to run a huge array of mods for it. Some texture and visual mods that make the game look better than anything out on next gen. NV has the improved shooting mechanics and there are mods for that as well. Down to animation replacers which I love because the stances with certain weapons in games always bugs the sh*t out of me, so you can choose your own.

I highly recommend those games, I must have over 1000 hours in both games and I plan on getting back on new vegas and getting more mods in the next week or so after I finish MGSV:GZ.

Stalker is a FPS and Fallout a RPG. Which gameplay elements do you value more? Based on your post I think you are more of a shooter player and will like Stalker more than Fallout.

Also, if you want a tip, New Vegas has a somewhat better gunplay mechanics than Fallout 3.

Get the Misery 2.0 mod for Stalker Call of Pripyat. It is ridiculously intense, difficult and man it's so much fun. Improves all aspects of the game, textures, weather, atmosphere, new weapons, armours, you name it.

Edit: Misery's been updated to 2.1
