you need to make the game look to a game, and not a demo, if you want FPS improvements. GTAO features only a small island, with no interiors, and look the hardware you need to be able to play maxed out with good fps. they slaughtered the handling, they removed 3D objects in the streets, reduced peds density, never put new cars inside traffic..the last time i played SC was years ago, and the game looked way too beautiful. i mean the FPS was absolutely horrible

They slaughtered the handling? What do you even mean? Also what does the car handling have to do with the FPS?

It's difficult to extract meaning from that post, but to answer your question, better, more realistic vehicle handling requires the calculation of physics in real time, which requires CPU cycles and affects framerate. GTAV has rather simple vehicle mechanics that is--I believe--based mostly on lookup tables. This is fast, but does not provide the flexibility needed for a wide variety of situations. This is why vehicles in GTAV handle mostly the way one would expect until something extreme happens, in which case the vehicle reacts in a very unrealistic manner.

@jpm1

You must keep in mind that Star Citizen isn't a game, it's a game in development. As with any game that is being developed, it's simply not possible to make judgments about technical aspects. It would be like complaining that a sword is too soft, hot, and orange, or that a concrete slab is too mushy, or that a barrel of wine tastes like grape juice. One must withhold reservations of a technical nature until the product is deemed complete.

Having said that, Star Citizen does put one in mind of the Sagrada Família...

So there was a change in the road map, they moved object container streaming (ocs) to build 3.3.0 :panic: it's back on for oct. 10th but hurston and it's moon is STILL scheduled for 3.3.3 a build closer than 3.3.5 that is canceled. It's most likely will be on the ptu before live release but I'm sure ptu will be open to every member.1 more day away :D I hear from the evocaty (specific test group) that ocs is running better than expected and fps is much higher in the 100's but we will know for sure once they get a larger group in the verse.

I am excited about the a.i. combat and it's missions and with ocs I hope everything goes well.  A new mission giver on levski is also being implemented

OhutyqW.png

Looks like carrot top lol if I remember correctly you have to do some simple missions before you can get missions from designated NPC's

F.o.i.p

Will also be a cool feature for those who don't k now what this is, it's a feature Wich with a webcam (any webcam) will follow your face expressions and translate them on to your character so yea you can make your character make silly faces  and with it voice over i.p. but if I read correctly only people in your current area and not everyone like in gtao but I'm not sure we will have to see or hear :p

im going to jump on the first chance I get.

Citizencon live stream going on right now. If you have a Star Citizen account you can watch it here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/citizencon/livestream/main

They're having some technical issues like always...

edit: Audio still out of sync. When they said they were gonna stream on their own website instead of Twitch I knew it wasn't gonna go well.

edit: Lol it's on Twitch now. Audio is fixed:

They wanted to make people pay money to watch the stream at first, but obviously people weren't happy with that so they changed it.

Phew...

To be honest, it seems like they're going overboard with the, well...monetization I suppose is accurate. Hadn't they pulled in hundreds of millions of dollars already a few years ago?

I know that if I were actually investing a lot of money in this project, I would want to take a good look at the financials. You can burn through money at an astonishing rate if you don't have a good road map in place--and someone who is forcing everyone to stick to it.

You can see how much money they've made here: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/funding-goals

Looks to be lagging a bit right now, probably due to all the people tuning into the stream. They've had multiple studios for years now so it's possible they've already burnt through a lot of the backer funds. I've heard tho that they do also have some private investors that they haven't disclosed publicly.

edit: Also this year's demo wasn't all that special imo. We didn't really see a whole lot that was new. I'm glad that we'll finally be able to buy ships with ingame money tho and hopefully Object Container Streaming will make performance passable at least.

edit: Then again I guess what they showed here is much closer to release than all the stuff they've showed in previous demos. So that's something.

The thing about performance that I find troubling is that I didn't see anything that blew me away, or in any way indicated a reason for the very low framerate and hitching/freezing.

If the problems I experienced were just as bad, but what I saw and experienced really impressed me, and there was clearly a reason for the hardware to be struggling, I would be more optimistic; or rather, more excited I should say.

From what I understood about the project I was expecting something amazing at least to some degree, but I honestly saw nothing that impressed me at all. And of course with the performance as it was, there was nothing I could do but look around.

The performance problems so far have been mostly network related I believe and that's being addressed in the next patch. If you were to play offline then it would run significantly better.

I do think there is a pretty impressive amount of detail and scale for an MMO, especially with the city planet shown in the new demo.

My real concern is how much fun will this game really be in the long run. It seems like there's going to be a lot of long travel times in this game which might feel immersive at first, but I imagine would get frustrating over time especially if there's going to be a long grind for buying things. I'm also worried about how well are all the game's systems gonna come together as something cohesive and balanced. Chris Roberts seems to just kinda wanna throw in a bunch of stuff that sounds cool.

Update 3.3 just hit live. I tried it out briefly and the performance has improved significantly. I'm still getting some annoying hitching occasionally, but the frame rate looked like it may have been close to 60 at times as opposed to it basically being sub-30 most of the time in the previous versions of the game. I'm still not really interested in playing the game that much since right now I'm enjoying some other games, but it's nice to see some progress.

So I logged in and played a little, but hurston is in! I've visited and had trouble locating and entrance or lading pads. their is a no fly zone at the city but you can fly above it, if you cross the no fly zone you insta kill, it's highlighted red it's just not as visible. You can land near a "gate" and just walk it, I tried that after dying at the no fly zones I walked 5000m uh it's so big but I'm a dumbass that I miss judge it so yea.third time I just flew over the city and look for landing pads around the middle of the city you can go lower there but keep an eye on the red highlighted area you cross you die. They gave me 5,000,000 credits :D but it's in the ptu so just to test :p

uuHfA3O.png

here is hurson

0ebAAbv.png

you can see loreville in orbit

6oYjHRl.png

it takes a while to fly down PlanetSide though.

also traveling from Port olisar to hurston takes about 7-9 minutes >:c it's long travel time specially if you disconnect from server and having to re-logg in.

my screenshot button wasn't working after a while so I had to take this cool pic in ma real life phone crappy pic but I wanted to show this, this is where you come out of the hangars I was about to get to a train to travel to the stores.

qb4z4MO.jpg

but as I got in the train I got to look around intill I got stuck inside the doors wouldn't open and I lost connection to the server.

hopefully today I get to explore more!

So how was performance? Is it anywhere close to what you would consider acceptable for a release? Average framerates? Stuttering? Hitching?

Also, if I have various questions, such as "How large is a typical planet? Can the entire surface of a planet be explored?", etc., where is the best place to get that information?

Ok so I logged on yesterday and performance is not good, there was a lot of stuttering, on the first day it was running well but yesterday was not. it's the first build so I imagine as previous ptu builds that many updates will be rolling out for example the previous 3.3.0 had about 30 updates in about a month and that build is pretty stable (still some stuttering but not as bad)

On 3.3.5 ptu I had to close game and open my GPU menu to close apps and optimize (it's a 2 year old card) to get decent performance but as I got to hurston it started lagging and stuttering. I would guess it's probably 3 weeks away from live stable release (still alpha :p )

and to get that kind of info I'm not sure I've looked through the official forum but we'll in not sure, where I get my info is the you tube video star citizen releases (around the verse, reverse the verse) every week there's like 4-5 years of videos.

but this place is good to ask but it's like discord

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/lobby/7

Good amount of helpful people.

Ok after looking seams like you can ask questions on the general chat sub-forum just add a question tab/tag

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/3?label=11&page=1&sort=last-activity

There's alot of helpful members here :)

There are some questions I could answer like,

You can explore the whole planet  anything you see you can visit  and on the city you can explore walking you can fly over it but not trough it.

Here is a member showing and explaining how it works

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/4/thread/loreville-no-fly-zone-guide-its-easy-once-you-see-

The planet scale is 1/10 of irl or 1/6 I'm not sure if they changed it but it's huge.

Here I found a travel time vs ships chart on Reddit

hs4DRSp.png

I don't really like the travel times the smaller the ship the longer it takes.

And user created content (YouTube videos) are coming in and they are amazing.

@deadx23 Wow. Port Olisar and Hurston are definitely not two places on the same planet. Those ships speeds are between 20% and 50% of the speed of light!

Free fly week, just create an account and try it out. Current backers can try different ships from different manufacturer's, each day a different one.

3.3.6 is live along with hurston. Performance is not bad I get 27-30 fps with some places @ 15 but mostly positive.

I really thought the 3.5 ptu would have been first wave today, it's with the evocati right now. (Just 2 weeks away from live release!)

Well couple of things have happened since November. Squadron 42 has a beta date: Q2 2020

C.i.g got 46 million from an investor and is planning to use the money for advertising the game.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/mattperez/2018/12/20/billionaire-clive-calder-and-son-invest-46-million-in-studio-behind-crowdfunded-game-star-citizen/amp/

They added this year's roadmap with squadron 42 roadmap

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/roadmap/board/1-Star-Citizen

A complete new flight model

LrOVRuB.png

So this is going to be interesting they moved it sooner it was supposed to be on Q2 2019 so hurray!

fjabB8P.png

And I love that they increased the gun battles capabilities

hzZOcrt.png

Here "around the verse" explaining how it works (starts at the 5 minute mark)

So I am excited for the next content update 😁

And just for fun I've updated my fleet :)

The new ship I traded up to is.....:p

Mercury star runner CpoZhoF.jpg

Vwq6uJ5.jpg

2 size 3 main weapons

2 size 2 manned turrets

Size 2 missiles total of 4

96 cargo capacity

5 M computers (data storage/runner)

And a secret storage area!

Nox kue

sXji2P9.jpg

2 size 1 main weapons

(I have the silver one)

Drake buccaneer

z9sky3b.jpg

2 size 3, 2 size 1 main weapons

It has a turret, 2 size 3 but I'm confused it's supposed to be size 4

Size 3 missiles total of 4

Cargo capacity 0

Origin 135c

2 size 1 main weapons

Cargo capacity 6

210 Mil from backing, and they still need money. yeah take these 46 millions and refund me. so i can buy stuff in Elite. 210 millions, and they can't give us even a little game. indie devs are removing all their hairs from their head right now. i totally understand a video game is something complex, and difficult to do.i understand it takes time, and needs a good engine. but 210 millions, come on. lay the egg, whatever it is let it go out. stop grabbing people money, and sending it into a black hole. they launched a funding not to have investors onto their back, now they also need investors. how did Elite was made. the game is billions lightyears ahead from Star citizen, and they didn't need 250 millions. i'm not bashing Star citizen, i'm just saying stop sending your cash into a blackhole, and buy Elite. Elite is monument. Make the God damn ship take off before making large ground battles, and Blade runner cities 😑

I notice that these ships are designed aerodynamically, even with air intakes and cowlings. Is this because they are designed to operate often within planetary atmospheres?

Lol elite dangerous, if star citizen would have been pushed out at the same time as no man's sky it would have sucked the same as elite dangerous.

And by the way, my ship takes off perfectly 😉 maybe it's on your end....

I'm not sure, the  atmosphere is going to affect your ship. But it makes sense if they are now taking account for planetary flights in there design.

actually SC had been pushed out way before NMS. this is the problem with SC. there's a kind of giant hype around that project while it's just wind. i've seen confs where you heard the fans shouting in the background, like if they were looking at a playmate undressing you know; while the game was still in project, and was laggy as hell. this is what i'm critisizing actually. i have nothing against the project itself, nor even the devs that are working hard on it. but it seems some people tend to deificate CR, and SC. while there are thousands of talented devs working hard around the globe on much more accomplished projects

concerning Elite, it seems you didn't play the game for a long time. because.85% of Star citizen promises are already implemented in Elite. and for info Elite is the father of all space sims. not to say the father of video games. a game that was incredibly ahead of its time in 1984. the genius of its devs is palpable in ED. i stop here the small clarification. if your ship takes off in Star citizen, and you want to keep sending your money into that thing fine. we are in democracy

Nope not pushed out like nms, cause you know nms was a complete game when it came out. Maybe it confuses you that we are able to play SC but sc is not a game it's not a demo it's a skeleton of a game because it's still being developed, we just have a perk to try/test what they currently have worked on. I guess you haven't played lately cause performance wise is allot better than it was for a game still missing major components.

they need to finish making the game then we could see how it stacks up because it's not done and is not ready for the market.

As for elite I'm sure people enjoy it it delivers what it claims but no way it has 85% the features that sc promised. I have played it I personally didn't like it I found it lonely and boring.

at least you played it -_- . what do you think Star citizen will deliver ED won't. you want non loneliness you'll have exactly the same scheme with SC. or a multi populated with griefers (among others), or a solo game. solo, but griefer free. with SC the ship doesn't take off without lags, they talk about ground battles, the ground battles aren't implemented, they talk about atmospheric atmospheres. atmopheric planets aren't there they talk about Blade runner giant cities. this is what i don't understand. make the ship take off, then go on with next step. don't put the wagon before the ox like we say in France. and yes ED has a lot more than SC. stable FPS which is itself an amazing performance for that type of game. complex economy, and politics impacted directly by your behavior. astonishing sandbox size, with mind blowing diversity (billions of systems and no 2 systems similar). good ships choice. ship customization. planet landing (including mining, and exploration. with ressources, wrecks, ruins). great diversity of bases (outposts, starports, planets bases), all with different interiors. great missions choice (commerce, bounty, passengers, search and rescue, prisoners transport, supply, attack, pirating, wreck loot, refugies transport, cartography, and even charity). manual landing procedure with control tower. crafting. only things that are missing so far are complete ships interiors (even though you can roam the cockpit with the camera), and bases interiors where you can walk. but for a game that was born only 4 years ago, i find it in pretty good shape if you ask me

Wtf are you talking about? My ship "takes off" just fine maybe it's on your end. SC is an mmo not solo. But LIKE I SAID it's still being developed everything they talked about is coming or is online, 3.5 has a freaking whole planet as a "blade runner" city -_- lorville that is now available is a big "blade runner city"  I'm not going to list "what SC deliver" instead I'll include the road map that has previous releases and future ones cause it's too many to list

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/roadmap/board/1-Star-Citizen

Here is a video of regular players have made in-game available now "ground battles", they are called los50 (they are a crew)

looks like you don't know what your talking about, you could also see the game performance.....
