How to become a pro racer

I made this thread because I notice how bad many of the drivers are in online races.

Part 1: Steering

Say you come to a turn like this.

The average person would take it like this.

Track+bad.jpg

The best way to take this turn is this.

Track+good.jpg

Notice how the line is as straight as it possibly can be. That is the absolute fastest way to do a race.

You come from far to one side, go towards the inner corner of the turn, and follow through by coming back out wide.

Part 2: Braking

Braking is one of the most important parts of racing. If you can't brake, you have a way harder time winning races.

Contrary to popular belief, going fast around a track without the proper racing line, braking, or steering isn't going to get you many wins at all.

If you approach a turn, I find that hitting the brake about half way will slow your car down more than if you just slam on the brakes. Now, for some turns, such as going on to a very wide road, you probably won't need to hit the brakes much if at all. But if you turn on to a side street, you should use the brakes until a little after the middle of the turn, then accelerate out.

Part 3: Steering

Your steering should be very smooth and not abrupt. You steer slightly until about the middle of the turn, then turn all the way, and finally follow through by steering smoothly towards the end.

Part 4: In a crowd

Racing in a crowd is a whole different ball game. You not only have to be confident in yourself, but you also have to be aware of the other racers and their movement to win the race.

The only thing I can really encourage is to stay far away from the crowd. If there is a really tight turn ahead, slow down and let them crash and you will take the lead.

  • How to avoid getting spun out: Getting spun out is the most frustrating aspects of online racing. So what I like to do is stay a fair distance away from the racer, then once I see them turn towards me, I slam on the brakes and watch them screw themselves out of the race.
  • Avoid the urge to race dirty: If you mastered the main aspects of racing, then there is no need to race dirty. I don't like to race dirty, but if someone spins me out (Which does happen) I will spin them out as revenge, but only if I know that I can spin them out. Most other times, I will just keep on driving and avoiding them.

Part 5: Choosing the best vehicle

Choosing the best vehicle is another important part of racing. My way of choosing the best car is to look at the stats. If one car has a better top speed, but worse acceleration/traction, I wouldn't bother with it unless it's a long race with few turns such as Long Haul 2.

Here's my list of best racing vehicles

Sports: Elegy, Jester, Feltzer, Coquette

Super: Adder, Entity XF, Turismo, Cheetah

Coupes: F620, Exemplar, Felon, Jackal, Zion

Compacts: Blista, Issi, Prairie

Muscle: Dominator, Gauntlet, Sabre Turbo

Motorcycles: Bati 801, Akuma, Double T

Offroad: Sanchez, Bifta, Injection, Dune Buggy

Sedans: Super Diamond, Tailgater, Schafter, Intruder, Fugitive

Sports Classics: Z-Type, Monroe, Stinger

Suv's: Granger, Baller, Landstalker

Note: these are the ones that I found easiest and best to drive for beginners.

I hope this has helped you with winning races. If you have any questions, ask me in the comments!

I don't think your diagram is good, not every turn should be taken on the inside and not every exit should float to the edge.

Being a "Pro Racer" in GTA: Online involves having skill in pitting, ramming, and generally causing all of those around your vehicle to crash and burnout.

Just saying... this isn't Forza, friend.

I was just talking about the average turn that you would take. Of course, there are some turns that you may have to do differently.

That's how I have over 600 wins barely hitting anyone?

Why does it have to be Forza to have racing? Just because it's GTA doesn't mean that it's not a racing game also. And it takes no skills to pit and ram people off the road. That's why people do it.

Instead of braking an alternate method is to let off the accelerator before a turn, you go through slower but don't lose as much speed compared to braking. Plus it's easier to gain speed on the way out of the turn.

Now, for some turns, such as going on to a very wide road, you probably won't need to hit the brakes much if at all.

A good example of this would be turn 1 in Cutting Coroners. That corner is so easy, you hardly need to alter your speed at all but people always slam on the brakes and get in the way.

Turnleft is not a sport.

What are you talking about?I believe he is referring to the redneck sport "nascar" where rednecks camp out in motor homes to watch cars drive around a circle 500 times (and you thought golf was boring)! Edited by Flyby29

Yes, that corner is a pretty easy one. That's why it's so much different playing in a crowd than alone. When you are alone, you can master the track, but in a crowd, you have to race a whole different way.

I can appreciate the effort in your OP, but racing lines tend to go to sh*t when other people don't care to learn or just don't give a damn.

Yeah, racing is a lot different with other people in them. I try to stay away from them and pass them while they crash.

That also works through some turns.

Welcome to GTA online where 90% of the players are retarded. The only time I ever get respectable races are with people 18+ who know how to drive in real life.

I prefer real life racing anyway. 1 year away from the corvette track being finished here in Bg, KY. 10 min drive for me!

How to become a pro racer: If you really think you're any good, try to join Apex Stalkers crew and compete with the best there. Those guys will show you how to get better just by racing behind them. I didn't think I could learn anything more about the racing in this game until I joined that crew. Everyone races clean and there are people online at practically any time any day. I'm so glad I joined the crew and finally being able to show people what I can do in this game.

Actually, football (soccer) is the number one spectator sport in the entire world. Nice try though.

Anyone can add answers to that site. Give me five minutes to create an account there and you'll see an answer saying that curling is the number one sport.

Also, did you even read the answer given there?

NASCAR is the No. 1 spectator sport, holding 17 of the top 20 highest-attended sporting events in the U.S. It's rated #2 on TV.

Try something a bit more reputable... Wikipedia, for example:

"Association football, also known as soccer, is by far the most watched sport on the planet."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectator_sport

"Association football, commonly known as football or soccer, is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the world's most popular sport."

Credit to OP for a somewhat in depth look at driving technique. I think this is a perfect guide for beginner to intermediate, but I think more advanced racers will find the game simulates much more than you would imagine when it comes to grip, balance, inputs and techniques based on drivetrain and more. There is so much beyond basic rules to follow like braking to a certain point or going wide and cutting through the apex. Advanced braking techniques such as trail braking, or left foot braking actually work, and weaving through each and every set of ess curves is going to be different based on position, speed, turns after the curves and elevation/camber changes. This isn't meant to be negative: on the contrary, as a matter of fact. If you have a great win record with what you know already, you have so much more time to squeeze out of these cars.

Oh and NASCAR haters: I hate the culture, and watching NASCAR, but don't confuse boring with easy. NASCAR drivers are great drivers, but they sure as hell aren't the best.

Sure, it's not great, but it's still more reputable than ask.com or chacha.com. If you follow the second link I presented to you as proof, you'll find several sources that are presented to back up the assertion the article makes.

I'm not going to sit here and debate this point any longer. If you truly believe that NASCAR is the most watched sport in the entire world then that's just fine with me.
