Completely random ammo purchasing amounts?

This affects me somewhat and my friend all the time. We'll run a playlist, say Coveted several times, and we'll buy up all of our ammo. We'll play instance of Coveted, succeed without dying or even taking all that many shots, but then when the new instance comes up we might need to spend thousands (sometimes $15,000+) of dollars on ammo. At other times we will only have to pay a couple of hundred bucks to buy up all of the ammo. The pace of our shooting doesn't change and we don't use explosives, nor die and yet the amount of ammo we have left after a mission can wildly vary.

You accidentally picked up a weapon that was not originally in your inventory. I'm going to guess you either picked up a SMG or Micro SMG.
