I used to talk to my brother...

My brother and I have been on the internet since 93/94... we were living together at the time but we both moved on to different places and different homes since since. What didn't change is that we would always talk to each other via email. At least once a week. But often it was much more often than that. Having an exchange of 15-20 emails during a week was normal and fun.

And then he bought an iPad a few months ago (in august or september of 2013) I didn't really understand what was going on at first but when he was here a few weeks ago I figured out what the basic issue was.

All of his replies to me now are one sentence long because it's too much work to keep typing on the tablet screen. After typing out so many characters on the tablet it becomes a burden and irritating to user.

I barely talk to him anymore because of that stupid iPad. That's all he uses for reading his emails now :( When he was responding with his old keyboard & computer he could punch out a 400 word reply in 4 or 5 minutes.

And now it takes 4 or 5 minutes to reply with one sentence. Pathetic. f*ck these tablets.

I'll can write 3 or 4 paragraphs of ideas and more than few questions in 10 minutes and all I get is a 1 sentence response? Come on. Maybe that's normal these days for 140 character twitter brains... nothing more, nothing less. f*ck.

We talked by phone for a while back but it always ended up in email conversation because it was far more convenient. Once in a while we would skype... we only live about 450km from each other so we see each other about 2 or 3 times a year, at most.

Unfortunately, now that he has that god damned apple tablet his idea of convenient is when he's at work.. an email shows up and he tries to punch in a response as time permits, which is not very long. Or maybe when he's in bed and the tablet buzzes when a new email shows up.. I don't really know.

f*ck these tablets and their damned onscreen keyboards that are totally impractical.

I cucked Alex Jones

I was expecting some sad tale about you and your estranged brother, I didn't expect to find you bitching about tablets. Well done.

f*ck these screen keyboards.. they're awkward and hard to use. Doesn't matter if it's an ipad or android.

I don't like tablets, but I also don't find it that difficult to type with them. I would also try and take the effort to send longer messages to my sibling or people I care about if it really upset them that I was being.....well, lazy.

There are some really nice blue-tooth keyboards out there. Even some that are built into an iPad cover. Ask him if he'd be willing to use something like that, or just go ahead and buy one for him.

I used to communicate with real paper letters before cellphones and e-mail.

Sometimes it took long to get a response. But those letters could be like 5 A4 sheets. It was much more interesting than these instant messeging ways we have today.

Some of the young people can't even write correctly with a pen anymore. Shame but that's how it's going to be.

Touchscreen phones are a pain to type with. I have to correct almost every word.

What I was going to say. Get him a keyboard for the iPad or buy one for him. There's various brands but I went with Apple themselves and got myself an Apple Wireless Keyboard.

I use it with my iPad when I'm typing for long periods of time and on my Macbook when I have it on my laptop stand.

Maybe the younger crowd has an easier time typing with one hand heh. I've noticed the same thing with a few friends that have blackberries and android phones. Their emails are usually short blips with punctuation used in strange ways. And the savage use of acronyms really blows my mind.

I know, I know. It does sound like I'm crying. Not really, well maybe just a little bit :) I'm just very irritated that these popular touch screen devices have ruined what was a good thing. All I have to look forward to now is 1 liners with bad punctuation.

There were a few suggestions about keyboards that would be appropriate for the ipad but I don't think that's really the issue. Instead of coming home and reading an email on his computer he now reads it on his iPad at work. Likely while he's in an elevator or taking a quick breather between meetings. So he uses that moment to respond as quickly as possible..

It just sucks.. f*ck this generation of 140 character twitter bullsh*t.

It could be worse. I hardly talk to my brother. In the past, years had gone by without us speaking. And we get along great and have a good time together--now anyways, we fought like cats & dogs as kids. I'm actually going over to his place today to help with some remodeling and it'll be great to see him.

Tell him to install Skype on his iPad. If he doesn't have it, anyway.

Otherwise, see about calling him via Facetime or something?
