What is with stock star and their strict checkpoint system? (Races)

Why do I have to drive IN IT? Why can't I drive next to it in a race? I understand that the game doesn't want me take a short cut and jib the race, but if it's on the same road and I drive past the check point system it should still work! I was having a lot of fun in this race, had me on the edge of my seat but just because I didn't drive directly in or just brushed past the checkpoint system, I failed

 

Rockstar ALWAYS do this, it's what killed it for me in Midnight Club too, I don't like this style it doesn't feel normal to me.
