Are Rednecks a problem where you live?

Here in Finland, rednecks are a problem in rural areas. And since about 90% of FInland is considered rural, they are a huge problem.

Our rednecks are gun toting, poaching and inbred breed. It's rather scary to travel in more rural areas because you never know when a car will stop by and out jumps some redneck youths intent on killing and raping you. Seriously. I do not recommend travelling in Finlands countryside to foreigners. Especially blacks are in danger getting shot on sight by some overzealous and racist redneck.

I live in the West Country, the home of Britains answer to rednecks. They are unintelligible, inbred and constantly pissed off homemade "scrumpy"; though they don't seem to be as hostile as American ones.

This perfectly sums up the type of people you get around here, this was filmed in my local area too so that accents pretty familiar.

And like someone else said, we have Travellers or "Pikeys" which are kind of similar. They are basically groups of Irish Gypsies who travel round Egland in caravans (although many no longer travel) and are pretty much universally hated as being thieves and fighters. There's a camp of them just outside my town and they sometimes come in and rob dealers or start fights, but they mostly keep to themselves. What I really find crazy about them is that they still have a very strong Irish accent, despite probably being in Britain for generations, I guess it shows how insular their communities are.

In Spain we have "Canis" which in England are called Chavs.

Canis are young lads who get into trouble easy, they take soft drugs like Hash and also hard ones like cocaine. Underage canis that go to high school, sell drugs on campus and even bring switch blades to school. They fail every class in school and they speak and write like a complete ignorant. Their main goal in life is:

-Go to the gym to get fit to impress the CANIS girls

- Steal a lot of things so they can then sell them and buy their weekly dose of cocaine and hash

-Steal to make money for themselves

-Go out parting all weekend in Hardcore style of music places

-Beat the crap out of someone for no reason at all.

-Spend money on modifying their sh*t car with very bad taste mods.

Living up north, there is no such thing as rednecks.

Parts of upstate New York and the northern half of New Hampshire would disagree.

Ohio, and Indiana too. And Montana and Idaho. Rednecks aren't bound to geography and aren't specifically southern.

I'm in southern ohio right now, just north of Kentucky. We have rednecks which are your typical blue collar white people, and then we have hillbillies further east out towards the Appalachians. They're a whole different kind of people.

Yeah, forgot about Indiana, mostly because my experience with the state was in Gary....not too many rednecks in that city though. It's true that they're not always southern, and they're not always white either. But given that it's 'safe' (or at least not 'politically incorrect') to make fun of white southerners, people just run with it.

Chavs are even worse than rednecks IMO. I'm kind of surprised the whole chav fad is still going, actually.

Closest thing to rednecks here in Chicago are either the Midwesterners that come in on the weekends or the sweatpants-toting white trash that are common to both the surrounding suburbs and America as a whole.

There's nothing wrong with the average redneck. Just like any other subculture, there are good people and bad people. They're not all homophobic racists.

As for the ones around here, in California, there are a lot more rednecks than you'd think. They, of course, live in the more rural areas away from the big cities, and generally live in the inland areas away from the coast. Since I grew up in one such area, I am well aware of them. I might even be considered one. I like some country music. I like to go out in the desert and shoot guns and ride dirt bikes. I've been tailgating at a NASCAR race.

Even though I live in Texas, they're not a problem here nor are they that common. Maybe its because I live in San Antonio and there are more hispanics here than anything else. When I went up to Austin last week, there seemed to be more rednecks. There was this one hick in his raised up Dodge Ram that was cutting people off on I-35 up in Austin.

I've been living in New York for over 13 years and I have probably only seen 2 rednecks my entire life

What part of New York?...because I've spent some time in Rochester. I kid, I kid. I'd add a smilie but my tablet is on the wack

I can't say West Philadelphia has rednecks. However, the central part of Pennsylvania is often refered to as Pennsyltucky.

I was once denied the privilege of buying gas in central PA because the rednecks running the gas station didn't like 'the looks of us' hippies.

The thing about some of the more backwoods parts of this state is the locals have a way to identify if you are from 'the city'. If you live in a highly populated area your car has to pass emissions and the official sticker is slapped on your windshield next to the regular inspection sticker. Rednecks know that two stickers=city person.

No worries homie lol'd

I live in the actual city, around the Bronx area.

I live in Mississippi so...it's kind of a given that there are rednecks here. One thing I love about the south is how self aware we are so a lot of the 'real' rednecks make light of their southern ways. We do have some of those upper middle class guys that drive obnoxiously loud trucks though. I love old country, go deer hunting sometimes when it's that time of the year, and I drive an early 2000's Chevrolet that belonged to my dad, so I guess that kind of makes me a redneck myself? I don't chew tobacco or do anything like that. My Dad used to take me to Talladaga sometimes to catch Nascar races but he always had to give me incentive to go along. There was this cool store there in the years before Gamestop/EB games got popular called Game x-change and they carried a bunch of indie PS1 titles and unofficial strategy guides.

Funny story since we're on a GTA forum, a lot of people I know that are into games thought Trevor was going to be some kind of vidya game voice of 'our' people and still say that. Some of them refuse to believe he's Canadian to this day when I tell them.

And man, for the record, most new country sucks. A lot of it is just pop/light rock with a country twang and slow mo music videos of vaguely southern people smiling and hanging out.

The Leviathan

Oh yeah. They are a problem. Always telling me to "bump it" and whatnot. I just want to live in Cali with all the other snobby people.

Lemme tell you a true story about the rednecks of Finland:

Couple of years ago, a redneck lad came running to a village constable, shotgun in hand, and shouted:

'sir, I captured a bunch of lepricons!'

'Did you now?' asked the constable.

'Sure did', answered the hick lad. 'I found them in them woods over yonder, and I took them captive! Theyre in our barn now, under lock and key!'

The constable, with half the village, then went to the barn, to see what the lad had captured. And do you know what they found when they opened the barn door?

They found four Thai tourists covering in the corner!!!!!

You see, the cornhusker lad had never seen a foreigner. So, when he saw these tiny people with slanted eyes picking berries in the forest, he had instantly assumed they must be lepricons!!!

And this really happened in hicksville Finland!!!

What! You mean to say the media-fed stereotype is just a...stereotype? Great Scott!

We have 'Boers' they are the south african rednecks. They all wear short shorts, shirts and long socks. Most drive Toyota Hiluxs and they love Braais (BBQ)

Interesting fact: during the SA war, the Boers used to call the english soldiers 'rooineks' which means rednecks because their necks got sunburnt easily

Yeah, rednecks are a problem here. I think they are wherever they live and I'll explain exactly why: they are usually ignorant and utterly clueless about the world around them. They do not care about anything unless it somehow relates to them or effects them.

I know a few of them just through social situations I've been put in and my god are they f*cking stupid.

They are so ignorant and clueless about everything that goes on in the world. They have no idea what is going on in the world. They don't involve themselves in anything. They don't like to discover new things about the world or expose themselves to new things.

One of the people I speak of legit didn't know who Nelson Mandela was. When he died she was like "who is that? I don't know who that is?" and that level of being ignorant and closed-off in this day and age is just mind boggling. Keep in mind this person has 24/7 access to television and the internet. The people she was with, from the co-op she lives with, were also like "who is that?" etc. They're just more concerned with playing Farmville and spending their days doing whatever else. This is a person who thinks the entire Middle East is just people living in sand huts and cannot even fathom that places like Dubai have actual buildings. Nice buildings. I won't go into the other ignorant things this person believes and that a handful of the people she was with from her area agree on. So all of the above, yeah, I am talking about one person in a specific example but pretty much the others around her are the same. The handful that I've seen.

This person doesn't work either and just mooches off others. Her spouse works and she bitches that she doesn't want to get a job because "he'll take half my salary". No sh*t, you should help pay for the bills and contribute to the household income. Anyway, mooches off others and then bitches and whines about how they don't have this or that and don't have enough money. Get a job? You can't just bitch and then do nothing to remedy your situation. This is a person who expects everything to be handed to her and to put in 0% effort and work.

Pretty much only cares about whatever effects her.

Now it would generalizing to say that this is what everyone that can be grouped as "redneck" is like but based on my own experiences, I'd say quite a few of them are like that. Maybe not to the extreme level that woman is in the above examples, but certainly to some degree.

It just baffles me how someone can be so closed off from the world, clueless and ignorant. You don't need to know everything, don't need to keep an eye on everything but at least show some understanding or interest in the world around you.

This is all based on my own experiences and I hate to generalize but I am hard pressed to believe otherwise at the moment. It seems to be a unifying factor in what makes someone a "redneck" in relation to their personality. I won't go into the other stuff mentioned like living in a rural area, being a gun-freak etc.

I would pretty much classify ignorant and clueless people as rednecks. Someone can be a gun-freak or live in a rural area and still be interested in the world around them/not be a total twat or act like a hillbilly.

tl;dr: rednecks are the bane of every society.

People talk about how rednecks are ignorant. If redneck was replaced with the n-word, or another derogatory term this thread would never be allowed and nobody would be patting each other on the back about how awful those people are.

OPQIJcw.jpg

Red necks are hard workers, and so are wets backs; on appearance.

If you're making a point about this discriminatory thread :^:

Edit: I can't say I like either word, though.

Also, what does knowing about Nelson Mandela matter? How does that particular bit of information separate the educated from the unwashed masses?

Edited by WBaker

Audiophile, I agree with you with regards to the ignorance of certain people being frustrating. We have more knowledge at our finger tips than at any other time in human history and yet people are happy to remain willfully ignorant. It's laziness and a basic lack of curiosity. It's sad, but not restricted to Redknecks.

I was educated at a private school in England but I still know dozens of privileged, educated people who are more than happy to wallow in their own ignorance, paying no attention to the world unless an issue directly affects them. What's worse is when they do decide to remove their head from their arses and take an interest in world issues their opinions, loudly proclaimed across social media, are generally baseless, inconsistent and laughable.

The people described in the OP don't sound like rednecks more like Hicks, I actually hang round with them kinds of people cause almost half the people at the school I got to are hicks, but I am from Michigan down in the real south y'all got actual rednecks and hillbillys
