Cuban Travel Ban

Recommended Posts

Can we discuss this? I feel like it needs discussing.

Basically, why the f*ck are we still not allowed to travel to Cuba without first going to Canada breaking the law? It's silly. The Cold War is over, Cuba isn't the Soviet Puppet-State it used to be, and they're not aiming nuclear love missiles at us anymore. What gives? Anyone against lifting the ban?

THE GHETTO JEZUS

Maybe because during the Cold War you guys were ready to have nuclear warfare with them ? While Canada didn't want to deal with that crap ?

I can freely travel to Moscow, for about $600, at any time.

And what does this have to do with going to Cuba ?

You mentioned that we were going to drop/fire nuclear weapons at them and/or have them thrown at us. We had the same fears regarding the Russians but we are now free to travel almost anywhere in Russia.

Sugar! Now that we have other sources of sugar the current vendors don't want us to get inexpensive sugar. Remember when candy bars were a Nickle and jumped to a Dime when the embargo went into effect.

Besides Cuba is still a communist state and the Republicans have a deathly fear that the U.S. of A. will become infected.

Well look at Cuba its a Communist country still ( I think ) and aren't Democratic countries afraid of Communist countries ? I know my history is sh*t but didn't the US put an Embargo on Cuba and maybe that's why Cubans don't really want to associate with Americans ? IDK

It's our choice to have a travel ban, though. If the Cubans don't like us, fine, f*ck 'em. But that's not the case. We don't like them. Lifting the embargo and travel ban would create jobs and add money to the economy, and trading with a 'communist' nation would probably help to bring them towards a more open market.

I cucked Alex Jones

There is a large Cuban refugee population in Florida and most of them want the bans to remain, and since Florida is a massive swing state any presidential candidate who supports lifting the ban runs the risk of losing Florida. Politics are a bitch.

^Pretty much what I was about to say, especially since a lot of Cuban immigrants to FL tend to be on the conservative side. But IMO there's more to it.

IMO, part of it is that the U.S. doesn't want to "look weak" by admitting it was wrong or some nonsense. The CIA tried a bunch of batsh*t insane plans to take Castro down decades ago and it just made the federal gov't look increasingly incompetent, aggressive, and desperate.

Also, the U.S. tends to place sanctions on any country that won't play ball with them politically. *cough*Iran*cough*

As lil weasel said, sugar companies don't want competition so they tend to lobby to keep the US as isolated as possible from Cuba. Although travel isn't directly tied to lifting the embargo, it's still a good idea from their perspective to see as little progress made as possible. They're also the reason that sugar prices are twice the international price because of tariffs.

The anti-Cuba travel laws don't get repealed for a number of reasons other than lobbying as well. Politicians tend to only care about bumper sticker issues, i.e. things that win reelections because people get highly emotional concerning the issue. Since people generally have no concern over embargoes or travel laws with Cuba, politicians likewise have no reason to bother wasting their time on this small issue. Trying to repeal the bans also serves as ammunition to use against you by your political opponents, as you can be accused of supporting dictatorships.

You Americans can't go to many countries without going through a lot of paperwork/visas...

You can't go to:

-North Korea and if you do general people there would not like you too much

-Iran

-Belarus

-Cuba

-Vietnam

- And other non recognized states like: Transnistria, Abkhazia, South Ossetia...

As a Spanish citizen, the only place which i can think of that i could have trouble going to for the only reason of being Spanish is maybe Gibraltar.

They have DPRK tours somewhere, I forgot the exact location. I think they're state sanctioned. Iran allows American tourists with travel groups. Vietnam requires a visa and so does Belarus.

^Yeah, I've seen a few documentaries concerning American/UK tourists in NK, really interesting stuff. Pyongyang looks like a giant movie set. Hardly any cars or people walking around either. Then again a few quick film edits can change the context entirely.

In any case, I don't think too many Americans are losing too much sleep over the fact that they can't freely travel to and from North Korea.

Does even North Korea accept American citizens as tourists?

Only if they accept the glorious Supreme Leader as their God and Savior and the Master of Universe, and condemn whoever the current president of USA is as the" Western Devil, Symbol of Western Oppression".

...I am not making that up.
