Longevity in Broadcasting

Wanna know from you guys what you think of FM (and AM) Radio, how has it effected you your ENTIRE life, what is still on the air that you have access to, or perhaps miss that's gone now??

For me, growing up on music, FM Stereo was a major part, AM, not so much, but I did even undergo effort to secure a C-Quam AM stereo receiver (IIRC, GM Hughes car radios offered them for a time)

Been chatting about various rock stations that had excellent playlists and survived a multitude of changes in the years and decades that followed, allowing a soundtrack to our lives to continue. No doubt you've read about my mentions of Earl Root for the time I was here, he was a local broadcaster who volunteered to DJ on public radio, free of charge, for nearly 30 years before he passed away, untimely.

Our local rock radio mainstay is still broadcasting to this very day, and people still listen, believe it or not!

There's a local rock station been around for a few decades, great playlist, great station. Seems like they play Zeppelin hourly. They have a promo commercial saying they are "the soundtrack to bad decisions".

I was really into late night AM a few years ago. Coast 2 coast was usually made for a good listen.

The song is from the film FM, which I bought on DVD, it's not much, but it pre-dated WKRP, one of my all time favorite shows.

Believe it or not, it was thought that concept for a TV show would fail, but it pre-dates things like The Office that offer ensemble cast acting in a place of work, and people always fondly remember it.

I wonder about some of the recent comments about morning alarms, do you guys have a radio alarm waking you up, by chance?? haha

I did not grow up listening to the radio because all I listened to was Elvis as a kid. Even when I started actually listening to a range of music I had the internet in some form. I'm personally glad that I did, I have bee able to search for the types of music I like and much more easily find new artists than I ever would have had I had to rely on the radio.

I'm afraid I just don't have the nostalgic attachment to radio.

How about your parent's music collection, if not radio? I heard about AM in the 70s, but I always hated mono sound, at least as long as I can recall it bothering me! haha

As an aside, my first car nearly had an in-dash 8-track player, but we passed that Olds Toronado by.

I remember having to add an under-dash FM receiver to our first driver-car, shared among family members, all it had was an AM radio!

never really cared for FM radio.

99% garbage talk or garbage pop music.

AM is where it's at.

but nowadays even AM mostly sucks.

today I only listen to satellite radio.

AM is mostly known for sports and talk radio, been long time converted to FM for better fidelity and stereo of course, but I wondered about any advantage going with Digital Receivers, I feel the limitations would still be there. It didn't really catch on or take off.

I love the RDS capability added to some stations, allowing ID of artists on the display along with any additional encoded text

Haven't listened to any radio since New York's K-Rock 92.3 FM dropped it's Rock in favor of Adult Contemporary in '04 and Smooth Jazz CD 101.9 was dropped entirely in '10...

How I miss those stations.

You guys DO know that V-Rock is virtually a direct tribute or inspiration of Z-Rock syndicated Hard Rock station, in my area of Minnesota, it was broadcast on both AM and FM at different times, during the Gulf war it was interrupted every damn ten minutes with war updates, and while I can appreciate keeping on top of important events, there are other news outlets to blanket that sh*te with, as we know, the war wasn't over in a day, and it ruined the enjoyment of listening for a great long while, while the station is no longer. I REALLY REALLY miss Z-Rock!!

I've never really cared for radio, over here it's pretty much all pop, or pop of yesteryear. You get some good shows on Radio 1 but there's no station I'd be happy to just stick on whenever.

Even the rock stations on digital are wank. It's all online radio now. And if I'm gonna be messing around with radio on my laptop I might as well use my own playlist.

It's a tribute to all rock stations... just because it sounds similar doesn't mean it's the sole inspiration; because otherwise New York City's K-Rock could just as well be the inspiration. it was a haven of Hair/Glam/Trash metal as well as Hard Rock in the 80's... Not to mention it's festivals and annual concerts in Madison Square Garden.

Nah, man, V-Rock takes it's name from the whole Z-Rock concept, I'm sure you can find some audio archives that demonstrate how unique ZRock really was. It was syndicated nationally, best of my knowledge, so people around the various States in the USA would have heard it, we're talking late 80s early 90s though.

Here's the Wiki, I think if I can find some archives, I'm certainly in the mood, but I recorded some myself (on good old audio cassette!)

Some confusion on YT with the much later TV series, not related to the radio station from what I can tell
