[PS3] How to fix the missing textures/freezing issue

Well.. Thanks for all the help! I've been in touch with the Rockstar Support as well, but to no avail.

From what I gather, my troubles might be related to the blu-ray player or the drivers for the blu-ray player. But it's only GTA V that has these issues, so my theory is it might have to do with it being dual-layered.

I can't come up with any other explanation, really... Whatever I do, the same problem still occurs. Sometimes I can start up the game and walk around for a while before it freezes, but most of the time the game freezes during startup and loading.

I'll keep you posted if I should happen to stumble upon a solution...

I had these same issues man , couldn't play single player online anything . Tried all those fixes multiple times but nothing. I was very sad when I traded it in but that was the only fix in my mind lol. Was thinking on picking it up again but from what I can see it hasn't been fixed so f*ck it.

Hallelujah everyone! I think I f*cking did it.

How? By cleaning the blu ray-lens with a q tip and some acetone.

Guide on how to open up and clean:

Most people don't seem to recommend using acetone and instead use alkohol (isopropyl), which may be a better option - but since the Blu ray lens is made of glass acetone works just as fine. Just be careful not to get acetone on any plastic parts, and only use a very small amount. (soak some of the acetone of the q tip with a paper towel so that it's not drenched in the stuff, you don't want it dripping into your system)

I rubbed both lenses thoroughly back and forth for a while, then waited for it to dry/evaporate, and then repeated that with clean acetone q tips like 3 times.

Then I put the system back together. I had also uninstalled any previous save data and game data to make sure that the system would make a completely OK install this time around.

And it actually installed fine, and has worked now in both SP and Online for a couple of hours. I've also tried quitting the game, dismounting the disc and remounting it and the game starts up fine.

So before, my fail rate was probably like 99% and this far it's down to 0% which means that I'm at least on the right way. I'm still waiting for it to crash, and well, it might of course, but it seems like this did the trick.

I'm surprised R* never suggested that the error might have to do with the lens - it's also a really easy fix. As I mentioned earlier, I got the error message 80010514 which got me thinking that it was related to the Bluray drive - also it seems other games worked fine because they're not dual layered.

If you're trying this, I would suggest doing it as a final step after trying all else that R* support suggests - but if anyone can relate to the troubles I've had, I hope this strategy will help you like it helped me. Also, remember to eject any discs from the drive before you open up your system!

If I freeze again, I'll keep you posted on the circumstances...

Also, it goes without saying that this might not be recommended if you still have a warranty. It's an easy operation, but if you have a warranty you might want to consider exchanging your system for new one through Sony.

Cheers, everyone!

Yeah, it's some kind of special torque screws but you can actually unscrew them using a sharp blade or the edge of a razor. Check youtube for information on how to do it!

I know it's not optimal, but I've done this twice and as long as you're a bit careful and take your time with them they won't be damaged. They come of real easy, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Just try it, I think you'll figure it out. :) But don't stress and don't use much force!

(Or, buy one of those special torque screwdrivers... Though I'd say, using a knife is perfectly fine and won't harm the screws at all if you're careful.)

If your PS3 randomly freezes, you might not have tried this yet:

1. First, enter the recovery mode

2. Now you have 3 options you can chose out of 6 in total.

- Restore file system

- Rebuild database

- Restore PS3-System

3. If you have freezes with other games, you should try to rebuild the database and maybe then to restore the file system if the problem persists.

If it's just GTA V that's freezing randomly, then pick "restore file system". This is supposed to repair/fix corrupted files.

As far as I know, both of these options delete your messages.

4. If those do not work, you should make a backup of all your files you want to keep (which are usually the savegames and maybe some porn stuff) BEFORE you pick that option.

This option will wipe all data of your PS3, it's basically a factory restore. However, the system updates sill stay, so you "only" have to re-install all your games and copy back the savegames onto the PS3.

MAKE SURE YOU UPDATE YOUR TROPHIES BEFORE DOING THAT

Hope this helps some "noobies" out there :)

Before you do any of that... I had the typical issue of the game suddenly freezing randomly, sometimes a minute into the game, sometimes after a few minutes of play.... and the only thing I could do was restart the PS3.... so if you have that issue.... do two things. One, clean the disc, and make sure there is no smudges or dirt marks.... and two, clean the lenses of the console. It might be a pain in the ass for older ps3 consoles, but simple if you have a slim line. There is two lenses, one id DVD and one is Bluray... that's why when you pop in another game it runs fine... GTA5 is a dual layer game... you probably popped in a game that's not dual layer and it works perfectly because it's not reading from the same lens.

Thank Rosenthal I'm going to give it a try I'm guessing that is the problem. This is the only game that gave me trouble.

Nice to hear you got it finally working!

I was PRETTY sure that GTA V uses a single layer disc... Well, seems like I was just proven wrong :D

@triplem: I made this thread because there are some people who do not want to open their consoles since they might cause physical damage to it, I wanted to provide people with a software-wise solution :) I can still edit the first post, I just don't have that much time right now :( in about 1 or 2 days

Lock n' Stock

I'm so sick of this piece of sh*t game freezing up. I don't f*cking understand it at all, Most of the time it just freezes on the loading screen, and the occasion that it does get into the game, it will often work for about 20 minutes then freeze up right after displaying blurry textures or in-game music coming to a stop.

Not even rebuilding my database made the problem go away. Is it the console? All my other games work fine. Is it the disc? Not a scratch on it. Is it the game? This never happened before I rebooted my PS3 after my hard drive died on me. I don't even know what's causing the problem. F*ck this sh*t, all I'll say is I can barely play the game anymore. Woe is me.

Doesn't work. I have tried absolutely everything. I have reinstalled, done this, tried this and that, nothing works. I bought a gta v disc from GameStop, installed (which took longer than any game I have ever seen), then attempted to play the game. Well it froze while loading. I tried again, and it loaded, but froze later, I tried again, and it froze in the same exact place as the last, tried again, and again, while each time it froze at the same exact spot. So I tried a few things, then decided to take it back to gamestop. About a month later, I decided to try again, this time using gamefly. Well, it froze....... Same exact spot. Mind you, both discs where new. I am extremely pissed off, and totally stumped. If you need, it is freezing during the initial mission with franklin. I hop in the R8 and speed off, well once I get up the first hill and start to cross the second intersection..... It freezes. I thought maybe it was loading the city too fast for my PS3, so I tried stopping at the intersection and waiting, not caring if I won or lost, I just wanted to get past this damn part..... Well it still freezes, so it doesn't seem to be a loading or rendering problem. No other game freezes. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hello, have you tried the game disk in another console? Either a friend's or a games store will be able to help you.

I have not. Thank you for the idea. It's pretty frustrating having to go back and forth from a store, support, online forums etc.

Yeah, I can empathise with that.

We hate the thought that it might be our console that is faulty, my 360 plays any DvD except my Kill Bill DvD. The DvD plays in every other player I have so the DvD is ok, my 360 however is 5 years old and probably full of dust.

Trying your disc in another machine is the definitive test. If it works fine, your console needs a service. If the freezing fault is replicated, the disc is faulty.

Good luck!

I am very sorry for this late response. So I tried it in a different machine, and it worked perfectly. They said since it is freezing in th same spot no matter what disc, then it's my system. I was a little worried, but luckily people have been having this problem left and right, so they knew what to do. They told me to turn off my disable my internet connection to the ps3, play in story mode for a while, then turn the connection back on. So I did that, played it offline for about a day accumulated, then switched the connection back on (4 days ago), and it all works perfectly now. I have not had one freeze since I disabled the internet. Thanks again for your help!

So I'm currently having this problem, and have been having it for a couple of months now with my PS3 Slim.

My symptoms are as follows:

GTA V/GTA:O will both freeze after an unspecified amount of time, usually very short.

My radio will stop playing, or when I get into a new car, the radio plays the seeking noise but never actually starts playing music

Textures on my mini map will cease to load in more detail, thus leaving it to be very jagged (as it is simply zoomed in), however, in the game, the textures will still load.

Something that I noted was the fact that when this happens, my hard drive light stops illuminating, thus indicating that the console is no longer accessing my hard drive.

My troubleshooting steps are as follows:

I performed a Recover File System, to no avail

I performed a Rebuild System Database, to no avail

I performed a factory restore and reinstalled the updates/GTAV to my HDD, to no avail

At this point, it still froze, which prompted me to think that my hard drive was failing, thus I replaced my stock HDD with a 240 GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD, performed a system firmware install and installed GTAV. It still freezes.

At this point, I decided to crack the PS3 open, to see if it was clogged with dust. Surprisingly, there was not much dust on the interior of the console. I still cracked open the blu-ray/DVD reader and cleaned the lasers with Isopropyl Alcohol. The game still freezes.

Anyone have any other ideas? I really don't think that it's the console considering I can play GT6 nonstop for hours on end.

try to re-install the patch + check if the game still freezes a couple times, maybe this will help.

I know it sounds stupid but you don't really have much choices left :/

I have a PS3 slim aswell, just like most (not all, but most) people who have this issue.

you might ask yourself why I suggest you to re-install the patch a couple times, but here's a post of mine (#2) where I've done a similar workaround http://gtaforums.com/topic/741977-ps3-game-freezes-and-endless-loading/?do=findComment&comment=1066310981

The idea is just about a faulty download of the patch even though it appears to be fine. IDK how this should be possible but for some reason, it worked for me aswell (even with GTA V)

Had freezing issues online since around July and only freezes online. I've restord PS3 and rebuilt database ect. No other game freezes, it started when I would be driving fast or around chaos it seems to happen when it's trying to load data? It use to be the odd occasion but now happens every 10 mins and I can't even complete a job. Tried a game of survival and it sent the first wave then dint send any men in second wave until eventually freezing about 5th wave (still no men showing up just passed the round)

I'm going to try a new disk to see if that's the issue but if that fails then it might just be the end of the road for GTA for me!

If anyone else has same problem or info how to fix I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

BlaineDog
