As some said; Turtlebeach X12's. Around $60, they use an AUX IN (green jack like for speakers for your PC), also come with a pink jack for PC use, white and red audio jacks to plug behind your TV which means you can use a standard TV (if you're like me and don't have an HDTV). USB that plugs in your Xbox 360 and wire that goes from controller to Turtlebeach wire that has a small box that lets you turn up/down bass, game chat and voice chat. You hear yourself in the headset which is weird at first but you get used to it and can practice making fake voices, so that's nice.

I really recommend these if you're tight for cash and want something that lasts. I throw them around, I've taken off the ear muffs and put them in the dryer so they're all warm (I live in Canada) and it's been 2 years I have them yet they still work like new. Seriously, consider these. At least look them up. Some stores will have a few headphones plug in so you can test them out. While these don't turn up the bass (sound is weird), you should try them out as they're comfortable. I wear them all day when I have my gaming day. Whatever headphones you use, though, take a break from time to time so it doesn't hurt your ears/head too much. :)

Keep us posted on what you're looking to purchase.

*edit*

Guy above me mention cords. Turtlebeach has this long cord you can tie together with velcro (comes with it, attached to wire already). It's actually nice to have all that wire so you can listen to it in bed. It's a preference but when I can I get something with wire. Means you'll always be connected, no hassle with some sync-base, etc. Oh, and Turtlebeach are for any platform. PC, PS3, Xbox 360, probably the Wii works too. Not for Nintendo 64, though.

I'm on PS3, what's the best headset to hear people and to be heard?

I have the Sony 7.1 virtual surround wireless headphones (not headset), expensive but mother of God, its beautiful, i am very sensitive to these damn things as they hurt my ears after an hour or 2 but this one is padded nicley and my ears never hurt, they last for around 8 hours, longer than any other i know of, it drowns your tv sound which is cool unlike these other rubbish mics and best off all is you can manipulate the game sound and/or the online player chat sound which i love, some guys are extremely loud or soft online, so all u do is adjust your headphones, it has a stereo option for direct sound really and then the virtual surround setting which i permanently use.

heres a link to what it looks like.

I actually ordered a set of these last night...good to see a positive review :)

Will report back my findings when they arrive!

I use a gioteck EX03 thing, just a glorified bluetooth headset, it's adequate and very cheap! (£15)

I have an Earforce PLa for PS3 and I love it...

  • Amplified Audio - Enhances game sounds for a more immersive experience
  • Bass Boost - Built-in bass boost adds depth and realism to the game audio
  • Independent Volume Controls - Allows for personalized balancing of game and chat audio
  • Microphone Monitor - Let's you hear what you're saying while talking
  • USB Powered - No batteries required

biggest drawback is that it isn't wireless but the cord is like 20 feet long and the sound is awesome

also has off on switch for mic, and works on PC as well...

I know we don't have to listen for footsteps. Do I need a high end one or would an average one not make much difference.

If you have a PS3:

1) You could use any old bluetooth cellphone earpiece. It would have downsides, though, in that anything broadcast through your speakers will be picked up and sent over the air, causing everyone to hate you and mute you, anyways. That said, it'll work in a pinch and you can probably tweak the gain in the mic plus your volume to negate it somewhat.

2) You could also buy a 3rd party unit. YMMV on things like how easy it is to operate, plug in, durability, and the ability to move it to the PS4 should you choose to buy one.

3) What I did, about 18 months ago, was buy the "offical Sony Playstation Wireless." You plug a dongle into the USB port, and it just works. Easy. You can plug the dongle into your PC and have a wireless headset there, too. They're comfortable, have held up well to 18 months of gentle use, the battery (integral) is still in great shape, and they're fully upwards compatible with the PS4. Cost me in the neighborhood of $99 when I got them, which seemed like alot but not compared to some of the crazy prices the 3rd party units go for.

I reached the point of 3 after realizing option 1 sucked, and not being able to find option to fill 2 when I was at Sprawlmart at 2am and wanting to talk to people in BF3. I never thought I've made the wrong choice. A headset makes games infinitly better, as you can communicate with like minded people and will facilitate making like-minded friends and accomplishing goals.

You will, however, hear alot of CHUDs. Get ready to hate teenagers more than ever.

I use Turtle Beach PX21's, absolutely love them. Sound quality is awesome, and chat clarity is perfect, and they work with my PS3 and 4.

No one has suggested turtle beaches yet?

I have the trurtle beach p11. I like it very much.

The only thing that is odd with it, is even when I have my mic muted, my players mouth still moves, and it shows my mic in game, and I can even gain rp points in the shower, but I know nothing can be heard because I asked a crew member.

I might just have to check settings in my ps3.

Turtle beaches. Any will do..

I can hear sticky bombs from inside stores.. Gun shots from blocks away. I can hear a Lazer jet from across the city and pin point it just by listening.
