This is what happens when you DON'T try to run people off the road

If catch-up hadn't been on, everyone except me would have scored DNF. That's not an exaggeration. It's times like these I wish I had a capture card. But, basically, Nine times out of ten, the dude who hangs back and lets everyone else throw each other off the cliff wins in the long run. Stop being a douche and race.

EDIT: Except in GTA Mode. In GTA Mode I will fraking cut you. With a missile.

Catch-up is really stupid in races. If I'm in the lead I shouldn't be challenged by the guy who crashed half a mile ago.

I have kind of a love-hate relationship.

Basically, when you're playing a race with your buddies and are trying to have fun, catch-up gives everyone the chance to enjoy themselves.

On the other hand, if you're trying to hold a tournament, or some kind of "Pink's" race (which should TOTALLY be possible!), catch-up is stupid and should be turned off.

The way I would have programmed it would have gone something like this:

When creating a race lobby, you can choose a few options:

  • Bets disabled. Catch-up is enabled by default, but can be disabled.
  • Bets enabled. Catch-up is disabled by default, but can be enabled.
  • Tournament mode. Bets can be placed on oneself and no one else. No catch-up.
  • "Pink's" mode. Loser loses their car. Two-player only. Betting and catch-up disabled. <Unlocked at level 50 (or something)>

I think that'd be a good system.

I got into the habit of crashing people BECAUSE other people would do it to me a lot more times than not.

Especially since I've been trying to unlock all the engine mods/paints I've yet to unlock, and a sh*tload of my losses (when i actually TRY at that) are from skilless buttf*cks clipping my car. Got tired of turning the other cheek, so I just started clipping people myself.

Not to mention, catch-up is complete garbage, if you got first place after escaping a huge pile-up consisting of every other player, or if you're neck&neck with someone and your rival smashes into a guardrail, then you should already have that race in the bag. But no, you get punished because everyone else sucks. Then the guy in second place, miles behind, uses this handicap to get upclose to you, and sure enough, he'll probably clip you, and congrats, you've just received another undeserved loss. Catch-up also defeats the purpose of modding your car, I put these engine upgrades in here to make my car FASTER, so I can do BETTER in races, not to have some tool sneak restrictors into it that trigger when i'm either doing too well, or he's doing completely horrible.

but of course, clipping is something i only do to randoms, because more than likely, they're thinking about doing it to me

it's not something i do in a lobby full of people i know

I hear ya. Serious races it's got to be turned off. private crew races are a hell of a lot of fun with catch up. Just riding each other's slipstream and chatting the whole time. Long haul 2 and "ALOT OF..." are good for chatting while cruising round the map with no traffic at all. Back in October I hadn't met many folk yet and races hard over and over again. I have never done criminal records for unlocks. It's boring and it's a cheap way to get chrome. You can tell when someone did it that way when they show up with a super modded car to Laguna Seca and do nothing but crash on all the turns.

I would like to add that it's pretty sad nobody wants to race anything but supers. My super is jacked and I like driving it, but I prefer my comet or my jester. Muscle is good too. Don't even try utility unless you just want to have a laugh. It's rather amusing; if you have patience.

Don't be a prick?

If you crash someone into a wall, he will most likely not catch up to you, even if catch up is on.

I remember when people exploited the Criminal Records race... hammered endless amounts of people out of the track or crashed them into a pole, they NEVER finished before me.

If you want to be a prick, you gotta be good at it.

Easiest way to f*ck someone over is if you're behind him. Thanks to slipstream, you can either push straight from behind so he doesn't catch the next turn or you just crash into him sideways and he's done for.

But you can also use your brakes when someone is behind you and obviously wants to crash you... that's risky though :) you can let him through and then apply the technique stated above :D

The definitions "just racing" seem to differ from player to player ;)

thats because criminal records is extremely short, and a constant right turn

on really long tracks, especially the ones that stretch all the way across the map, with lots of straightaways, catch-up can (and will) f*ck you over.

But then you doing it randoms, teaches them that "they are just going to do it to me" and that vicious circle continues. Why not teach them, that just because you can, doesn't mean you have to? I get where you are coming from, but sometimes you have to lead by example even if it costs you some pride.

Oh and as Ive said before. Catch up is the auto aim of racing. Its lame and should always be off, if you are truly racing. Playing with some friends for laughs, but never if your actually going race.

i agree with you but sadly it's not how things work in GTAO

when you're around a bunch of randoms, it just gets to the point where you have to prevent something bad from happening, even if it means doing what you were trying to prevent yourself

What happens?

You get a boring, one-sided race with little competition?

People need to stop whining about ramming in races, its GTA people are gonna do whatever's neccesary to win.

Yes, I prefer races where people don't ram, but I've accepted that it will 9 times out of 10 happen so preparing for it is better.

I would rather ramming and a really fun race with all racers in it until the end than the borefest you showed a picture of.

You're right that's not an exaggeration, it's just wrong. At least 50% of the players need to finish before the DNF timer starts.

Anyway grats on holding down the throttle the hardest.

Driving clean and with courtesy wins races.

Most morons who drive dirty end up f*cking themselves in the process. Its best avoid car contact as much as possible. Also I once accidentally pitted someone in drift king and he got piss and took me out purposely at the finish line. So yeah don't play like scrub.

Also, f*ck catch up

That's egg zackley what I try to do. I just slither around the crashfest and wind up in front.

But with that catchup. Its like the brakes are on and the next thing you know the a-holes are right there again..

I just did long haul. Was driving Adder, they all drove tourismo. I clearly had the fastest car.But yet with catch up-slipstream combo, they kept hitting me from behind, again and again, it was one of the most irritating races I've countered so far. From now on, I race my own races or from friends. The cripple /Pettiness modes are just.....awful.

Well that's bullsh*t, as the timer only starts to run down on other players when half of the racers have finished.

See there is a mode specifically created for "GTA-style racing", it's called "GTA races".

You can do plenty of things in GTA Online, experiencing 'real' proper races through standard mode races should be one of them. It IS races, not derbys (unless you make a derby track of course).
Sadly some people don't get it.

If you wanna race dirty as much as you want, turn GTA Race on, there, anything goes.

ramming is for GTA races. read the description in the loading screen. "if you want to cheat.....GTA race." Any opinion doesn't change that and if you ram in a standard race, you're a cheater. Simple.

dirty racers probably wouldn't survive a GTA race. Well the ones that won't do them at least We had dirty racers in our session one day and switched the next race to GTA race and they all left.

When I do GTA races I like to get to the front, climb out and wait with an RPG. Try it. it's hilarious. if you aren't 100 yet, try a Heavy Pistol or Assault Shotgun. No way you'll lose if you manage to get them all.
