Raavi
The outrage! He suggested health insurance might be more important than watching your weekly dosage of Keeping up with Kardashians and Honey Boo Boo. How dare he! If this doesn't prove he is a zionist nigerian who had a bastard child with osama bin laden and is here to take your guns away to put you in FEMA death camps I don't know what will!! Still, I wouldn't think health insurance SHOULD be mandatory. If I a bulldozer busts through my wall as I type this and I have health insurance, how groovy. If I don't, shame on me. I wouldn't think the government should require you to get health insurance, especially if you live a fairly inactive lifestyle. But then again, those bulldozers come out of nowhere... I sense another healthcare thread coming along. I can't be bothered to deal with this again, but I will say that firstly acting like having mandatory healthcare insurance is an infringement on civil liberties is ridiculous, a serious case of messing up priories that Obama is talking about and just generally wrong. In the UK (which has one of the largest nationalised healthcare systems in the west, not to mention one of the greatest and a tax cost per head that is something like 3/4 that of the US cost) the NHS is seen as a basic human RIGHT. Chunkyman
I find it adorable when politicians lecture others on the importance of financial responsibility. Niobium, Moth, AznDragon89 and 1 other

Everybody can get sick regardless of the lifestyle they lead. Say you don't have health insurance and one day out of nowhere you get a seizure, you get transported to the hospital, tests are run and you get diagnosed with a growing brain tumor, what now? Do you Refuse treatment or undergo treatment that can easily cost a few hundred thousand dollars? If you are insured you won't have to make that choice or risk going bankrupt and getting your house foreclosed as result of it. Because the cost of those procedures are covered by your health care provider under the premium you pay. This is common sense in most of the developed world. Because the cost of those procedures are covered by your health care provider under the premium you pay. This is common sense in most of the developed world. That makes sense, with the seizures and all, but would the government really have to step in and make us pay health insurance? I can imagine it being the case for car insurance, like if you get in a wreck, you gotta pay to fix whatever you wrecked, but that's not the case it seems with health insurance, or at least it should be. When I was growing up, I was always told "If you don't do X it's your own damn fault". Like going hungry right by an apple tree. If you go hungry then, it's your own fault. I'll very most likely get health insurance for if I get a brain tumor (they seem to run in my family, no joke), or hit by a bus, whatever the case may be. But the general idea of the government having to hold our hand for everything seems somewhat of a long stretch.
lil weasel
Giving up Cable, I thought I heard him also say Telephone in the bite? What about the Internet? Insurance is gambling. You bet it won't happen by not buying or buying that it will, and company bets it won't, and doesn't pay off if it does. This is why we need National Health Care, so important decisions like this will be made for us by the Federal Government employees. Don't the Feds supply telephones to the poor (check your Phone bills itemized taxes).

This isn't a "long stretch", it's been standard liberal values for over a hundred years! You see, people are way too stupid to be trusted with managing their own affairs, and so we're going to have enlightened progressives scientifically manage your life for you. It's a win-win situation frankly, we get to feed our inflated ego, and you get to be treated like a child!

I'm glad our opinions here are being taken into consideration and the Americans on this board aren't just ignoring the fact that the rest of the developed world has some form of socialised healthcare at lower overall cost to the taxpayer, the majority of the citizens of said countries view this as integral to their democracy. I sure am glad that said Americans aren't so myopic and blinded by American exceptionalism and their warped view of how the state can and should act that they're just throwing words around like freedom and liberty without considering the implications of such!
