The Reality of GTAO [A Philosophical Perspective]

Ever been driving through the streets of LS in Free Roam and someone you didn't even see attacks you and kills you?

When you respawn, you look at the map and their blip is halfway to the Eclipse apartments.

What's the feeling you get? For me, it's that another coward just squeezed one out and didn't stick around to say thank you.

Do you pursue? I do, sometimes. If they're close enough, yes.

What if they don't flee, so you go after them? I do, sometimes, if I'm not doing something else.

What about when you are driving along and see another car on the map coming toward you? Do you go out of your way to intercept it or pull aside, slowing down, in hopes the player won't engage?

I typically just keep driving, but sometimes I'll try to lock ram horns with them, head-on.

And what about when you're sniped by someone way out of reach? Especially more than once? Do you go all vengeance crazed and focus all your attention on getting even or do you just laugh it off and run away?

And Tanks. Are you a vagrant, vigilante, or victim when it comes to tanks? My only purpose for the tank is to slowly and methodically exact revenge on a player who didn't know when to call it quits.

My point is how personal some players take the actions of others in this game. I drove over a player last night who was just standing there. He respawned and I drove over him again, just because it was fun. Eventually, I got out of my car and bottled him about three or four times. On the last time, however, he "woke up" and fought back, killing me.

I was tickled like an Irish barmaid! I got him one more time and then got my car and drove off.

He wouldn't let it go, though. He kept coming after me, over and over. He breathed heavy into his mic and uttered stuff I couldn't hear, like he didn't know his mic was on. Sometimes he got me, but I mostly got him. Finally, I jumped into a race because I was bored.

But it made me wonder, how is this person in real life? If someone cuts him in line, does he speak up? If someone cut him off in traffic, would he pull over or would he try to cut them off? If someone hit his car, would he calmly work out the insurance details or go bananas yelling at the guy?

A lot of the behavior, including my own, is based on the non-reality of GTA, basically doing things we would never do in real life. However, it does make me question how some players might handle real life scenarios, especially some of the younger players, who are years away from driving a real car or able to coherently react rationally instead of react emotionally.

Just thinking and curious. Sorry if the post was TL;DR. Would enjoy reading your thoughts. Cheers!

Good post... good thinking. It depends for me, sometimes I get very vengeance-minded and when I do it's terrible destructive for me, as I can't stop the fight until I'm ahead. And often that doesn't happen, but I try to be as calm and even-minded with the game as possible, because A) I don't want to ruin someone else's fun (unless I think they are trying to ruin mine) and B) I don't want to ruin my fun with a joyless series of attacks that usually end in my death.

 

What I try and what I do are often not exactly similar, though.

to the majority of your points i dont mind being killed, if someone get the scope on me then good on them, im not much of a vengeful person... sometimes ill engage if someone seem to be repeatedly targetting me, have a bit of back and forth until i get bored and move away...

 

im far more likely to target someone who kills my crew members, those ones i know dont often shoot and are usually engaging in some passive activity (like flying a plane and some douchenozzle RPG's them then spawnkills them a few time, little did he know i had him in my scope.... 7 times....)

 

but as for the above... if someone intentionally crashes into me in a race, i ignore it and show them why its such a bad idea, by beating them as many times as they can stand... for me winning through pitting is like playing golf and breaking your opponents legs with your driver, then claiming your "victory" ... or bringing an RPG to Prison Thugz (yesyes i know you cant, its a metaphor)...

once had a guy lose 15 races in a row... everytime he tried to PIT me early on, some times he did, sometimes he didnt,,, but everytime i managed to make a clean pass and beat him.. he was tenacious though.... that dude didnt give up n eventually i got bored of driving on my own so left ofr a more challenging race...

 

For me theres far more satisfaction from beating someone by playing fair, than lowering myself to their substandard level... likewise i feel no need to hunt those who get the better of me, cos they indeed had me over a barrel... why bitch, its a game, why rage, its a game... (although sometimes i do go off radar, then stand as close to them as possible, wait for the timer to hit 0 and jsut as i pop back in radar, pop one in their skull.... although thats not exclusively vengance, just sometimes for sh*ts n giggles and mostly to the guy whos spawnkilling level 5s and calling them &*^$ @$%^$£ "*&$&)

I'm not nearly as violent in real life as I can be in GTA.

 

I had a GTA moment happen to me last week. We have these roundabouts in town here that basically replace stop signs or traffic lights to keep traffic flowing. The idea is if your road is clear you enter the traffic circle and go round until you find your exit and then you exit.

 

Well some guy blew right through his yield sign and nearly collided with me so I honked my horn at him since I had to hit the brakes hard not to be struck. I know without a doubt in my mind I was in the right here but the guy in the van stops his vehicle in the middle of the traffic circle and gets out of his car and starts walking towards me. I was parked behind him since he blocked the road. He starts shouting obscenities and looked like he wanted me to get out, he had his fists clenched which told me he was looking for a scrap.

 

Now I'm not really the fighting type, but when push comes to shove I'm also no pushover. However this time I wasn't very impressed with this aggressive fellow so I kept motioning for him to get back in his van with an arrogant smirk on my face. I knew if things got bad he was in for a rude awakening because to me it all felt like so many moments I've had in grand theft auto and I know how those scenarios usually end up. They end up with me driving over your flailing body. I won't lie, my wheels were turned directly towards him and I had every intention of running him down if he attempted anything stupid like attacking the car or myself as I sat in it.

 

Eventually after he'd yelled at me sufficiently he stomped back to his van and got in... at which point I started honking my horn at him again to piss him off further.

 

Yes, I am just as big of an asshole in real life as I am in GTA. Which is to say I'm pretty decent in both worlds, but piss me off and you're taking a chance with your life.

Funny, I was just pondering this question at the weekend.

I would say my real life and GTAO behaviour are pretty similar, but I definitely f*ck with people more on gta.

I'm pretty laid back IRL and don't really get angry if someone cuts me up in the car or similar. I live in the city and if I got mad at this I'd be mad all the time. Got a couple of friends with road rage issues ( why are they always (ex ) Audi drivers?) and it is NOT fun being driven by them...

 

In GTAO if someone kills me I'll almost always try for vengeance and will happily kill them/ be killed by them 'til I have to turn off or they go away. This isn't cause I'm mad though, just because I enjoy FR PVP especially with 1,2 or more players who like to go te distance so to speak. If someone is obviously cheating in a PVP situation or if they break out a tank I'm fine with walking away , I don't dwell on others who's behaviour I think is wrong. What I do dwell on , however, is mistakes I've made in fair fights that cost me kills, especially if I'm playing right before bed! Lol.

I feel more obliged to 'police' a free roam session taking out the trash around Eclipse Appts, collecting bounties etc, sticking up for friends, crew members and lower levels. I do go in invite only but not to runaway from the chaos, just to go on a trip without HUD and enjoy the game. When i want to get clothes or weapons or even go to the barber shop i'll pick up my akuma and just speed like a crazy guy and i never got killed on the bike unless i crash, HELL i do live in eclipse and go to los santos customs very often with my cars in f*ckin public lobbies, why the hell would i need a sniper or a machine gun in invite only? trolololol

I guess I play a more loner variety of the game, but I like to be in public lobbies. I never have crew members around, but if I did I might prefer the invite-only lobbies... it's nice to be able to do stuff without getting killed all the time, however the risk/"danger" is a bit of fun it itself.

The post you quoted had nothing to do with killing a person for three hours. There was a post in that quote tree yes, but it wasn't the post you quoted.
