Re: Milestone Topics - or, Quality Life Choices

Let's be honest here - posting on GTAForums in the year 2014 requires the mental fortitude of a box of tampons. The effort put forth in each reply is akin to the time Seth Rogen spends manscaping his Jewbush, and stands witness to the redundancy and lack of imagination in today's culture of continually recycling internet memes. Quality is at an all-time low, but old timers like myself still come for familiar names and to make fun of people. Let's not waste any time.

I've no doubt that most of you are nice lads and, more often than not, you mean well. Don't take it to heart when I say that your post count means absolutely nothing whatsoever. You did not climb Mount Everest, publish a bestselling novel, graduate Magna Cum Laude, or get elected District 37 comptroller. Neither, too, did your compatriots, associates, and constituents here contribute in any way to the sheer volume with which you hit 'Reply'. Yet here you are, showering them with praise for your menial accomplishment.

Don't get me wrong. If you reach an actual milestone like ten thousand or twenty thousand, then you might be deserving of a nod. A jovial pat on the shoulder. Perhaps a lolcat or a gif of James Van Der Beek crying. Maybe you'll be lucky and get a gif of Orson Welles emphatically clapping in Citizen Kane. Hell, I might even congratulate you myself, further bolstering my own engorged post tally.

With that said, celebrating anything short of ten thousand posts is utterly retarded. Most of you hit the four digit mark in the first 35 days of being here. Oh, the experiences you've had and the lessons learned as you marched that arduous journey toward one thousand. Your respect list is assuredly lengthy, no doubt a testament to the lasting, indelible friendships you've forged in the four most recent weeks of your life. All present know your name solely out of respect for your character and practicality, and not because you obsessively reply to every active thread on the board. Stand up, friend, and take a bow.

Raise a glass to yourself, and give a toast to...uh, yourself...for attaining such a lofty and respectable post count. Heavenly Father smiles down on you now, rubber stamping your pre-approval into the Pearly Gates. With pomp and passion, your preeminent posting prowess stands proudly- proof positive of your pragmatism, patience, and probity heretofore unseen. Praise be to you. And congratulations, because you are now top poster #1,978.

I celebrated my 10,000th post I think last month or so. Kinda an accomplishment to me, seeing as I barely do much else since I stopped swimming.

But then again, I also had milestone threads for my 5,000th, 7,000th, etc. posts

Kalvin is far from the first, and certainly will not be the last person to post a milestone thread.

Well I don't disagree with you, but this topic is a little mean.

Awesome! Another chance for me to post this:

I like milestone topics. They're irrelevant as far as their primary function goes, but they let me scare people into thinking that Tim Curry died. Or at the very least, I'm reminding people that he exists.

Somehow you became a favorite poster of mine just for this topic alone, it's why I have never made a milestone topic yet I'm always one of the few congratulating those that have done what I did months ago already.

I don't mind them anyway, but you make a good point.

+1 for Seth Rogen

How bout we jusy make that only people that have been here for 5 years or more are allowed to make milestone posts. That way we can cut down on the milestones from people who've been here for a month and already hit 5k!

And for reference, I've only made 1 milestone topic, and that was way back in 2007

I know theadmiral's been here since December 2013 afaik and she's got I think 6,000 posts or so. That's a lot.

Perhaps members that reach a certain post ammount can make milestone posts?

I recently went from a four-star poster to a three-star poster. Watch for my milestone topic when I hit one star, everyone.

We were all -insert younger age- at some point. -insert younger age- year old people do some things that people a few yours older than -insert younger age- tend to find odd, and sometimes even annoying.

Not to generalize, but kids annoy the f*ck out of me and that is almost the main reason why I don't own one.

However, this is a forum community and there is no denying that. I'm internet retarded, but there seems to be some traditions and standards within internet communities. Milestones are one of those traditions. People want to feel a part of something big. GTAF is big. They want to stand on a mountain top and say "look at me - people know my name".

I think there is a catch. Milestones should be treated like real milestones and not just a random time to create a spam topic. **I'm in no way claiming Kalvin's milestone topic a spam topic. I actually think that was some good old fashioned GTAF fun...something that has been half absent around GenChat of late.**

UniversalTwister, I love you like some son of a friend of mine and all, but you are a milestone abuser. I can't speak for anyone here but I think we need to disable your milestone privileges until at least your five year anniversary. Still love ya and all

I was gonna stop doing milestones already seeing as I already hit the big 10,000. I might come back on my 20,000th, but who knows where I'll be by then.

9 or 8 years ago, I was browsing this forum without posting, while some of the gentlement here (especially the GTAO section) were learning to wipe their asses.

I remember when a mod warned me for double posting. That was 2005.

That would deserve a milestone thread.

You guys will see a big ass milestone thread 21 jan 2015.

Virtual hookers, booze and fireworks everywhere.

I'll even bring a virtual bong for stoners.

If the mods doesn't ban me.

This gave me a good chuckle. :) Not a fan of the post-count milestones thing myself, but to each their own.

I'm a little disappointed that no one pointed out my stellar alliteration in the closing paragraph.

Also, don't get butthurt by my words. This isn't a diatribe against Kalvin. To be fair, I didn't even read his thread. Let's have some fun around here for f*ck's sake.

I like milestone topics. I've always made them even when I was a newbie simply because I liked the idea of them and it's an old forum tradition after all and a bit of harmless banter. Each to their own I guess.
