That why AC is the only OWG that is not a true

"GTA Clone",the only AC game i have ever played was AC2 and that was years ago,Tbh i have to say it not an Openworld game like the Ruler of the Genre,GTA,it was so RESTRICTIVE in gameplay and freedom.and i am sure AC4 is still like that.AC could pass for a Linear Genre game like TLoU,RES and CoD.Even Farcry 3 which is a Survival FPS game is more Openworld than AC games. That why i am happy WD is just "GTA but with Hacking"

How is AC II linear? And since you were wondering, AC Black Flag is not restrictive at all.

He probably hasn't played an Assassin's Creed game yet. ;)

Lol i played the 2nd game and i know what i am saying, you are restricted in killing NPCs and there are invisible walls in many part of the world,if you try pass the Invisible barrier or kill an NPC like in

GTA you will be taking into a Infinite White screen

Lol i am sure AC4 also has that, and that why it isnt a true openworld like the Ruler of the Genre "GTA."

In all the years I have played AC games, I have never once encountered an invisible wall. Also, why the hell would Ezio kill innocent civilians? He's not a criminal. And no, Black Flag has none of that, anyway. There are places you cant go that idk have to load etc and when kill any peds/guards you immediately are taken to the Animus White screen.but alright it good see AC4 doesnt have

RESTRICTIVE gameplay and freedom.anyway do you think it worth getting for current gen or next-gen?

You can kill guards, but not civvies, for an obvious reason*.

*- The tenets.

GTA V's stealth is not as good as AC's stealth. ;)

Lol dont even start ;) but hey what civvies?

I personally think they sh*t all over the GTAO series. GTA will always be different, until watch dogs.

online has ruined the good ol gta times... and Assassins Creed is going strong with it's single player modes.

I am a huge fan of being stealth and actually having to think about the way you play a game... gta is too easy and lacks a lot of physicality that players should be able to do.

however, I loved RDR. but RDR is not GTA, and had equally as great a story line as the Assasins Creeds did. If GTA would focus on player realism, instead of environmental realism and trying to pack an entire realistic world into a half assed story, then it would be much better.

all of this is my opinion of course, and I have always enjoyed games like AC3, AC4, Hitman, & Splinter Cell much more than anything rockstar has ever done. I never played max payne either... never cared for the story. But I am a cowboy at heart, so RDR was purely for that reason.

I got it for next gen. If you already have a next gen console, go for it. Same experience, but with better graphics and different textures. Edited by PhilosophicalZebra

I never played max payne either... never cared for the story.

You really should, at least 1 & 2, f*cking amazing games and story.

The issue with GTA is it always has completely no set story theme until you discover problems. That is something that has lacked with a lot of GTA games in the past. Any other game has a clear cut goal and importance. GTA is kind of wishywashy, at least in the last few releases. There isn't much driving force behind the game other than "do this job, oh sh*t someone f*cked us over, lets kill them, we win, awesome".

Though "clones" are a good thing in my opinion. Everyone bitches about Saint's Row, and despite how over the top and dumb it has become, in the early days, when the first game came out, I don't believe there was a single true open world shooting/driving game out there. You can say it copied a LOT of stuff from GTA and San Andreas itself, but it developed further on those features. It gave you a San Andreas style experience on the next gen. It also has had great features that GTA games have struggled to keep up with and match to this very day. We have only JUST got a proper garage system, and that is only in the multiplayer. Rockstar still has a lot to learn from other open world games, even if people call them clones, they may have been the first success in the genre but they don't own it and didn't invent the idea of driving vehicles and shooting guns in a world. That is essentially where games would have gotten to with or without DMA/Rockstar doing it first.

There are some truely unique aspects to games like Just Cause 2, Sleeping Dogs, Saint's Row 2, etc that piss all over features in GTA games, Those games might not have the engine and graphical polish as much as a GTA title might, but they definitely have as good if not better gameplay experiences.

The if they intend on making a game similar or not is redundant, the point is, do they offer something unique that other game's of their genre don't, I believe most do.

I respect your opinion, but now tell me what Saints Row brought to the Genre that GTA havent done a long time before it existed?

Co-op, Multiplayer, a fully customizable character to create yourself instead of someone you don't want to play as. Customizable and recruitable teammates, a fully functioning garage system. Hilarious game modes such as insurance fraud and septic truck missions. Firing out of your vehicle in any direction. Being able to fire out of your vehicle with any weapon type as a passenger. Much more vehicle customization options than even GTAV has. Gang specific wanted levels.

The list goes on, if you liked the games or not, they offered a more than decent GTA alternative until GTAIV. And after that game failed on many promises, SR2 offered the true feel of a sandbox game with full freedom that we should have got all along.

@The links you posted, I really dislike how people claim no sandbox game would have ever happened without GTA3. They might not have gotten as popular, or maybe gaming in general. However the seamless driving, shooting and exploring of a full open world is an inevitable goal for almost any game. I actually enjoyed Driv3r as a game, it even poked fun at Vice City for not being able to swim yet, which that game had advanced forward on before GTA even included swimming functionality.

A concept evolves, and what evolves from a game like Driver, being all about 3D driving before GTA ever went 3D. The next step was being able to get out of your vehicle and swap cars, the next step, use weapons on foot to expand the gameplay.

I mean that is what the real world is, eventually as tech gets better, there are just going to be bigger and bigger games with a lot of games having free roam maps, or at least very large free roam levels. It is just a result of the advancement of technology. Despite how good GTA3 was and how important it was for people, and amazing at the time. I refuse to believe it was the only game developers dreaming of that idea. Credit is due to them for making a working version of a real life city first. However, anything else can't just be called a clone because it used a free roam world and might include vehicles.

Alright bro,but GTA is the Undisputed Ruler of the Genre and the Modern Father of it since GTA3 (circa 2001) i am not feeling good today so i wont argue with you point all what you said about SR is right even though the franchise went out of competing with GTA after the 2nd game. But yeah SR2 was innovative even though it didnt implement features GTA 4 brought to the Genre that same year (2008) like;Realistic Carjacking,Hotwiring,The ability to go out with friend to hangout instead of just having the homies with you and you cant do anything with them, the ability to take cover in an openworld game, the ability to buy things online or watch a tv show or do realistic things (IV and V) the lists goes on,even Sleeping Dogs implemented GTA 4's Realistic Carjacking and Hotwiring.

GTA3 (2001) Revolutionised the Entire Genre setting new rules and standards because it was a 3D Sequel to an already Popular Franchise,i started a thread about the 2D GTAs and Driver1/2

in GTA series so you can contribute your opinions and arguements if you want :)

Fun Fact:Driver2 was called a "GTA Clone" and that was before GTA3 was released a year later (2001).i also posted a quote of an IGN writer here i think.

Out of all the AC games II is the best one IMO. It gave me a similar feeling to when I first played VC. The first AC was ok, but it was II that got me hooked.

Brotherhood and Revelations were good. I found III disappointing and IV was a return to form, but I never finished it.

lol

Ok, just a few points, as you mentioned, I don't want to argue I don't have the time to bring the list up.

1: To me, recruiting gang members to follow you around and protect you and cause havoc is light years more fun than taking some mopey son of a bitch character to do an activity that has no bearing on the gameplay other than to piss you off constantly with nags.

2: GTAIV or even GTAV for that matter has NEVER had realistic carjacking and hotwiring, all it is, is an animation that takes longer, you don't actually do anything, sleeping dogs was actually the first to introduce a proper slimjim to unlock cars, despite it is just an unlock and not actually controled by player input. Car jacking is the same no matter what game. However Saint's Row: The Third introduced diving into the windows, which saved a lot of time and hastle, as well as games such as Just Cause 2 and Sleeping Dogs introducing action hijacking, none of which exist in GTA. GTA has never evolved past smashing a window or pulling someone out of their seat.

3: I don't actually want to do realistic things in a free roam game, I have something called "real life" so I don't need to waste time in my game watching tv, going on web pages, because guess what I can do that more realistically in real life.

Realism should only exist in games in terms of the environment and game engine physics, not actual tasks. It is not fun or in any way cool to have to email your mother in gta. It is however fun, to roundhouse kick an old lady into orbit with cheat codes in SR2.

4: Anyone calling Driver 2 a GTA clone? That is like calling GTA3 a Driver clone, just because it went 3D. That is beyond moronic, and I refuse to believe anyone thought that. Comparing is one thing but calling it a clone is something far beyond dumb.

Great Points bro,but that links i posted are great to read, every devs in that article couldnt deny GTA3 changed the gaming industry and also Revolutionising and Popularising the Genre, even SR makers (Volition) said an amazing thing in that article,he couldnt deny that GTA3 defined the Openworld/Sandbox Genre.but it your choice you could believe it or not.and yeah i will give an honest reply at your comment.

1.GTA 4 (2008) predates SR2 (also 2008) with months, and if you dont want to hangout with friends you can call Dwayne for bodyguards that you can hang around causing chaos with and it not even a Gang-Themed GTA game like SA and TLaD.

2.But yeah IV introduced that to the Genre;

you smash the windows with either your fists or weapons then you hotwire the car, even though it a long animation.Chinatown Wars took that to another level and it was so detailed;you use a screwdriver or a plier and loosen the nots.and that have been implemented by many Openworld Games including Sleeping Dogs (even though you said it was the first to have a "Slim Jim")btw Franklin can do that.and GTA doesnt need to have action hijacks like Sleeping Dogs or Just Cause 2.

3.But yeah other Openworld Games are learning from GTA's balancing of Realism and Fun,even Sleeping Dogs and Mafia 2 went that route (unlike Saints Row games) Lol in Sleeping Dogs you can take a piss even though you couldnt watch tv,use the internet or sleep like in IV and V.and i am sure WD will also go with GTA's Realism and maybe Attention to Details.

4.Oh my bad, yeah Driver2 wasnt labelled a "GTA Clone" but yeah was compared with the 2D Era GTAs,afterall GTA (1997) make you steal cars, kill people, blow sh*t up etc even though it was a 2D-3D isometry Openworld Game unlike Driver1/2,yeah they had 3D graphics but you couldnt kill people or "pay n spray" your vehicles or wanted stars, but Driver3 and Parralel Lines were called "GTA Clones".i dont want to argue anymore on this thread and i have already link to articles to back up my proves,GTA didnt create the Genre, but it Changed it Forever.

I know how you feel. Even the BF4 thread isn't devoid of GTA lmao. I don't even know why this thread exists when Assassin's Creed is nothing like anything Rockstar has made so far.

People just like to compare for the sake of comparing. For instance, the Infamous vs Prototype debates back in 2009 were outrageous. Both games were completely different and only had 1 thing in common; free roam.

Yet IGN, Gamespot and so many users and fanboys across the internet compared them constantly. Hell, even GTA IV was being compared to Saints Row 2 back in the day, and now Watch Dogs is being compared to GTA V BEFORE the game is even out.

Comparing games aren't bad, but when you compare apples to coconuts, your argument becomes pointless.

Also I don't really mind when a game borrows an idea from another. Like Steve Jobs said, "Good artists copy, great artists steal."

How war IV compared to SAINTS ROW 2? IV came out months before that game.i think it the other way round if it comes to Openworld,"GTA Clones" and GTA.Infact SR1 was compared alot to SA during it release and reviews same was SR2.every Openworld games that have been released Post-GTA3 have been labelled "GTA Clone" or compared with GTA,so i cant see that stopping anytime soon unless they stop making GTA for a while and still it will be the undisputed Ruler of the Genre. But yeah i agree with your last line afterall GTA has borrowed and adopted some elements for different games and the same as been done with other games adopting and borrowing Gameplay features and Mechanics from GTA.

Go to Google and type Saints Row 2 vs GTA IV and you'll get your answer.

As for GTA clones, I can't really think of any game that's a carbon copy of GTA.

A lot of games borrow ideas and other things from GTA, that's a fact. But they're also unique in their own way.

Saints Row 2 borrowed a lot of ideas from San Andreas, but it wasn't an exact copy of it. It did a lot of things different from GTA at the time. Just because it's an open world with vehicles doesn't make it a GTA clone.

Where are you from? It looks like English isn't your first language.

Assassins' creed is not restrictive, especially AC4. It has a lot of freedom, just as much as GTA V does.

As for not being able to kill civvies (civilians), there is a reason you can't kill them. Maybe if you pay attention to the storyline of games other than GTA, you'll understand what I'm talking about. ;)

Well my english is great is just that some words needs meaning,if you have said Civilians then i wouldnt have asked but you said "Civvies" so i guess i had to ask Lol (for a minute i was scratching my head for the meaning)...I do play alot of games and some of them have great stories and the others dont,in the case of AC2 it had a great storyline but the gameplay wasnt so "Open" like GTA or many other "GTA Clones" (Openworld Games). But i would love to play another AC game in future :)

@Ryan

True, but SR1/2 are the only "GTA Clones" (SA rip-offs) in the Franchise and yeah SR could have given GTA a hard time if it didnt become f*cked up since 3 and 4.Well i guess if GTA didnt Popularised the use of driving and shooting in an openworld environment then every game with the same feature wouldnt be labelled "GTA Clones".

1: Dwayne's bodyguards were timed, only lasted like 3 minutes or so, and these guys also relied heavily on your relationship with Dwayne, if you couldnt be arsed to keep him happy like a damn girlfriend he would get pissed and you would lose the ability.

2: The features I mentioned were in SR1 which was 2006, also Sleeping Dogs was out before GTAV. The one franklin has is also an animation but exists nowhere else in the game and is not equippable or to be used in online or anywhere else. It really doesnt change much.

I mentioned the action hijacking because though it might not suit GTA, at least other games have innovated in those sections. I think it is pretty stupid to say GTA innovated it just because one character in one GTA game uses a slimjim instead of smashing a window. It is hardly an innovation.

3: I have no idea why you can piss and wash your hands in Sleeping dogs. However I do know that pissing restores your health and washing your hands cleans your clothes if they get bloody or filthy after use. So at least they have a purpose. Unlike the idiotic and useless features of Mafia 2, why someone would need to flush a toilet and open a window in your home is totally beyond me. There wasn't a taking a dump animation so I don't know why you would need to waft the smell out and clean up after.

I am pretty sure they are just useless features left over after development time was cut. Just like how the ATM machines in GTAIV do god damn nothing for you.

I actually don't think GTA has a "balance" of realistic and fun, I feel that a lot of the game is attempting at being realistic at the expense of the fun, but also fails at it, at the same time. I need a walking animation to go through an apartment front door. Or my personal vehicle has to be driven up to me instead of just spawned infront of my face or disappear after I call another. Instead I get a timer not letting me call more than once every 3 minutes.

None of it makes sense for realism, so why have it. I just want ease of gameplay over everything else.

Even Kojima said that yesterday when Awarding Rockstar and GTA the Bafta Fellowship.

see my last post to read the quotes of Kojima.
