... because if they were, then half the things that are making this game become horribly droll would simply not happen.

For example, Catchup. In just about every race settings thread I've seen here, everyone agrees that Catchup ruins races.

In Missions, everyone agrees to go in slow, strategize (if possible), and don't just go in all Rambo.

Survivals, the consensus is to take cover in a good squatspot and deal your damage.

We're not talking rocket science, here, right? Clean racing vs. dirty racing... renegade Mission mates... suicide survivalists... they can ruin a good match.

Just a short while ago, I lost several races specifically due to the Catchup feature. Now, it's no big deal, but with this weekends 50% RP boost, it would have been nice to have maintained the lead I had over everyone else and won. But, I could almost feel my cars slowing down while I watched the other player's blips coming up behind me.

My wish is that somehow the wisdom(?) and experience(?) shared on this forum could make it to the average player who seems to simply not have a clue about settings for jobs.

And then, of course, there's the whole Free Roam mentality, but I'm not getting into that... nope.

That's good. 98.82% of GTAO players are annoying prepubescent boys anyway. I pray every night before I go the bed that more won't discover this forum.

Yeah, it seems like most players are too stupid to change the default settings. I mean, I have been kicked from lobbies numerous times for no apparent reason. If you don't want random people joining, learn to turn matchmaking OFF!

You beat me to it. Casual racers, like myself, feel the plunger handle at the tonsil level every time someone comes back from a total wipeout when we've driven a perfect race.

Catch-up is OK on some races. I did Long Haul 2 without catch-up earlier with Muscles and no traffic, I was exactly 4 seconds ahead of the guy in second for the whole race. Pretty boring really but I got 20k for it which made it a bit better.

Catch up can be good or bad based on car class.

Supers don't need catch up on since the cars are very close to each other in performance.

On the other side of the coin, sports, coupes, and sedans can benefit from catch up, keeping some of the lower tier cars competitive, while still allowing the upper tier to preform well.

The worst is when you're politely asking the host to turn catch-up off and the rest of the lobby agrees/disagrees and the host doesn't even have a damn mic (or not using it). All races I've done that lets you pick your car class has been Super and Super only. That's all I've gotten and I'm probably the only GTA:O player that doesn't own a super car. I own a sport but no super so catch-up has aided me in getting 2nd or 3rd most of the time in a stock car (people can't drive at all). It's still annoying that everyone gets their own car and I get a stock one. At least catch-up works but if It was the other way around where I had my own car, I would want catch-up off. Stock cars catch up to you when you spent 130K on a car. It sucks.

The racing isn't the best in this game, I'll be honest.

I've done that, maybe two or three times and found the Host is either a deafmute or responds with something like, "You ain't like this race, then go quit and find another that go no <insert crude anatomical reference>!" ugh.

I understand where you're coming from but to look at this statistically. It's been a while since I've done this so someone smarter feel free to correct me or input. Using a standard bell curve the "average" racers would make up 68% off the population whilst "below average" and "above average" would both make up 16% off the total population. Therefore "average" and "below average" racers make up 84% off the population.

 

Assuming the only the above average racers prefer catchup to be turned off to make the race more difficult, challenging and competitive this is still only 16%.

 

Rockstar like most companies will target the majority so therefore the because the preference for 84% of the player base is catchup enabled they leave it enabled as a default. Although they did cater to the niche 16% as well by giving them an option to turn it off.

 

If you think of lots of software, the default options are for the majority of uses who just want things to be easy. While the hidden advanced options are for the more knowledgeable but minority of users.

 

So yes people want catchup to be off by default and a lot of you on this site are quite good at racing and therefore it's safe to assume more then 16% of this site ate "above average" racers. But speaking in terms of the whole sample population including those not on this site the majority will want it enabled as they don't understand what it does, don't want to mess with the settings or simply like it.
