ONE of the two soldiers murdered in Northern Ireland was Birmingham Royal Engineer Mark Quinsey, it emerged today.

Sapper Quinsey, aged 23, from Yardley Wood, was shot dead by terrorists armed with a machine gun just hours before he was due to fly out to Afghanistan.

Dressed in desert fatigues, he was collecting pizzas from outside the front gates of the Massereene Barracks in Antrim, Northern Ireland, when the gunmen struck on Saturday night.

His colleagues desperately tried to save his life but despite their efforts he was later pronounced dead.

Sapper Cengiz Azimkar, 21, from Wood Green, north London was also killed and four other people, including two pizza delivery men, one of whom is Polish, were injured.

The Real IRA have since claimed responsibility for the murders.

Today, tributes poured in for Sapper Quinsey who was described by his senior officer as a “hugely popular live-wire”.

Sapper Quinsey was born in Birmingham in 1985 and joined the Army when he was 19.

Following his basic training he attended the combat engineer course at Minley before qualifying as an electrician at the Royal School of Military Engineering in Chatham.

Lieutenant Colonel Roger Lewis, Commanding Officer 38 Engineer Regiment, said: “Sapper Quinsey was an outwardly calm, resolute and motivated young soldier.

“A social live wire and hugely popular across the Regiment, he was rarely away from the centre of the action.

“We were expecting him to play a vital role maintaining the living and working conditions of British soldiers serving in Southern Afghanistan. “Tragically he has been denied this opportunity.

“This has been a traumatic time and the Regiment and I are devastated to have lost such a fine and promising soldier.”

General Sir Richard Dannatt, Chief of the General Staff, added: “I am deeply shocked and angered by the attack in County Antrim on Saturday night.

“The peaceful garrison life so enjoyed by the soldiers and families of 38 Engineer Regiment has been shattered by this most tragic event, which is especially distressing as the regiment begins its deployment to Afghanistan.

“I offer the families and friends of those affected my heartfelt condolences and support.”

A the rest of the regiment flew to Afghanistan, Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams described the murders were “an attack on the peace process”.

He said: “It was wrong. It was counter-productive.

“My thoughts are with the families of the two men who were killed and who were injured.

“And you might take some succour from the fact that whoever was involved, they have no support and no strategy and no popular will to back up their actions.”

Tributes paid by family and friends

One person calls them freedom fighters and another person will call them terrorists. The picture painted of the IRA depends on who is creating it, but for the most part I don't think any opinion of them is wrong. I do believe in a free Ireland as I believe in all nations should be free.

But I don't believe in blowing up your own people regardless of what side they choose to be on.

This crew name has negative connotations and would be offensive to many people, even if you don't mean it to be. You can operate here if you pick something different.
