Why not eat insects?

I've eaten a quite few of these suckers in the past... Mopane worms (the caterpillar of the emperor moth)

They were dried and crunchy and served with some spicy sauce. Mmmmm :)

How could you eat something so cute, you monster.

What kind of insects are you going to eat?

I'm not going to eat any kind of insects.

because I'm not starving and I don't live in Africa.

but if I were, I guess I'd be ok with some chocolate-covered fire ants.

Africa isn't the only country where people are starving. -___-

For the sixth time, the majority of the world eats insect and they do it as part of a balanced diet.

I was being facetious‎.

Africa isn't even the only country where insects would be considered a delicacy...

And I was being sarcastic. Anyway, she's probably disgusted and wondering why the hell she agreed to go to South Africa (because she's a Yank)

Good point, but I've seen video on Facebook with people having their guts oozing out of them.

But OT: I don't see anything wrong with eating insects and many countries have insects as there delicacy dish so yea. But then again you wouldn't know if the bug is infected or poisonous or something like that.

Just to recap AGAIN. The majority of the planet eats insect as part of a natural diet. Not every insect is a tiny fly or squishy larvae. Shrimps are insects and most people here probably have eaten shrimp at least once.

I don't think people understand that should the west adopt insect into the diet, people wouldn't just stand outside with butterfly nets, you would have massive farms like you do now with animals and crops. You wouldn't be forced to eat random insects willy nilly, there would be standards and quality control just as there is now. Besides which, if we're talking about poisonous sh*t, then look at the packaging of every freeze dried meal you've ever eaten.

insects more prone to carry bacteria and disease then animals are.

it'll just end up making the already poor people ill, and eventually death.

Yea, what this guy said. You don't know where the insect has been and you don't know what it is carrying.

f*ck me, where did you people learn to read? I'm going to put this in big caps so nobody misses it:

WERE INSECTS USED IN A WESTERN DIET THEY WOULD BE FARMED LIKE EVERY OTHER FOODSTUFF. THEY WOULD BE UNDER FDA (or your country equivalent) REGULATIONS SO THAT YOU WOULDN'T JUST BE CATCHING RANDOM INSECTS FROM OUTSIDE. 80% OF THE WORLD EATS INSECTS REGULARLY AND THEY DON'T MANAGE TO DROP DOWN DEAD.

I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THIS GUY GOT THIS MADE UP CRAP UP, INSECTS ARE LESS LIKELY TO CAUSE TOXICITY, WITH THEM LARGELY BEING HERBIVORES. THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH POISON WOULD BE FROM PESTICIDES, BUT PESTICIDES WOULDN'T BE AN ISSUE WITH FARMED INSECTS NOW WOULD THEY?

^ I'm still not bought with this whole idea of insects here in food. If you are saying it's safe to eat as 80% of the world eats them, then how come we don't eat them here ?

Social taboo. I assume it stems largely from the bible banning the eating of insects in Europe, as does certain sects of islam and the Torah. The link I posted on the previous page touches on the west being the exception rather than the rule.

what would you feed the insects? how would you harvest the insects? please explain your "insect farm" theory on a practical level instead of just there will be farms to control disease. Edited by hornedturtle

The problem that people have here is the word 'insect'.

If you understand that insects are of the same phylum as crustaceans and that this includes Shrimps, Prawns and Lobsters, suddenly the concept of eating them is not so strange.

Except for me....I'm vegetarian!

no, if you're going to say eating insects is better, and more practical than eating a cow, you better explain your theory a little better. cattle are alot easier to kill and prepare, they are more manageable to farm in large quantities etc.

Firstly, being cold blooded, insects require less input (food) than equivalent animals. What you would feed them on is the same stuff you would feed cattle on, them both being herbivores. So already you have a greater yield for less input. I'm not sure how you think insects are less manageable to farm, generally you just leave them alone. Cows require constant maintenance. They're certainly not easier to prepare either. Generally you can eat an insect as is. You need professional slaughterers and butchers to chop up and prepare a cow.

This is a terrible explanation, but I'm tired. Feel free to comment back and maybe I'll reply later.

On the insect feedlots: Meal worms and crickets are already farm raised for pet food. The Chinese domesticated silk worms. Others domesticated honey bees. Cochineal, the other insect I mentioned before for red dye in pop (or "soda" if you're from some elitist state) is also farmed. Earth worms are grown for fish bait.

Onto how we're going to raise those insects for people food. Here's a mealworm farm in Thailand:

My understanding is that the mealworms are fed such things as rice, grass and water.

Now, in America, things will be a little different because the corn and soy boards will have you believe everyone can survive on corn and soy. So of course we'd feed our insects corn and soy! Consider that livestock eat corn and soy. Now consider that some insects have more protein than beef cattle.

screen-shot-2013-05-13-at-3-43-41-pm.png

Insects are comparable, or in some cases, better than beef as far as protein, but require less water. Insects are also more digestible than cow muscle, I might add. Plus, they don't emit so much gas that their facilities explode like with swine.

Considering how long people have been eating insects and how they treat them as a "delicacy," I'm sure the chances of eating a poisonous bug in Mexico City are equal to those of eating some bad meat at the Russian Tea Room.

bugs generally aren't poisonous.

you have a higher chance of being poisoned by your own raw beef than almost any insect you picked up and swallowed.
