Why Race is Broken

Recommended Posts

Seriously, am I the only one that am giving up with racing in GTA Online? I've been a fan of racing in GTA games for a long time, and vehicles and racing in general is something to me that is an important part of the GTA series.

Catchup

However, in GTA Online - it's just flat-out broken. Catchup entirely breaks the game. All too many times have I been first with a huge lead - only to be slowed down by this ridiculous feature and then ultimately when they catch up with me - they'll just try to knock me off the road. And just like that, I'll be close to last if not last and have close to no chance to be able to catch up in time.

Racing Without Catchup

Is a whole lot more fun, but good luck ever being able to play a race with catchup off. The moment they see either Catchup or Slipstream is toggled off - they'll leave.

Precision Driving & Lack of Ghost Mode

Precision driving is rarely rewarded. Majority of the racers will play as if it was a destruction derby. This gets really frustrating for us that want to try to achieve a clean race and let skilled driving be the winning factor - not luck in terms of PIT Manoeuvres.

This could easily be solved by adding an option for racing in Ghost Mode. I don't care how it's made, if it's for everyone or if I can toggle it only for myself but at the cost of reward penalty.

And if it were to be added, it should only be against other players - not pedestrians, of course.

Laggy Hosts

Sometimes you'll get into races that are barely playable. It's like if you're playing with someone on the other side of the world. Hell, sometimes even the pedestrians will lag. Rubberbanding back and forth, and if you're hit by another player that is rubberbanding - it seems as if the force is multiplied by quite a bit and sometimes will just send you flying.

Summary

Those are my reasons why the GTA Online Racing is just horrible. I have 44 Wins and 36 Losses(I can say with certainty that majority of them were places 2nd-4th). I don't consider myself a professional racer in GTA, but an experienced one. Might also be worth nothing that I solely do Car Land Races.

And no, don't tell me to "Play races with friends or crews". We shouldn't have to. It would be nice if developers nowadays actually focused on satisfying a bigger percentage of their players and fixing issues - rather than throw out new content like if it was wildfire spreading in a forest.

Sadly, those days are gone. Nowadays, nothing but greed is to be found at developers and publishers.

Feel free to post your opinions regarding racing in GTA Online, and whether you agree or disagree with my post. I will however not bother with attempts to start a flame war. If that's your goal, then by all means go ahead. But you will be ignored.

I agree OP. Ghost mode would be great, to avoid all these people crashing in to you on purpose.

Glad someone does. However, I can't even imagine Rockstar to even consider adding Ghost Mode. I'm fairly sure that in their eyes, lagging players crashing into each other is 'the way it's meant to be played'. :(

I can't help but say yes, I do agree, but then I kind of don't, here are my reasons:

Catchup

Where to begin.... Catchup my old friend, how many races you cost me! I do agree with you here, catchup pretty much steals your final gear and can really cause a headache for that lead driver. I could ask to have R* to speed it up a bit, but I have also won plenty of races with the catchup on as well. It comes down to how you plan a race with it honestly, esspecailly if slipstream is on. Letting second place take the lead just before you come up on the final stretch so you can utilize the draft and catchup to steal it from first is a good way to go. On the whole I agree but it wouldn't be fair to the slower drivers. As much as I might not want to say it, I feel catchup is a nescissary mechanic.

Precision Driving

Ghost mode is a pretty good idea, I haven't heard that one pitched before. As for the whole dirty driving thing, I have made a few statements before on what I think on the topic and again, I'll agree with ya there as well, it sucks but its a fact of life, every racing sim or game has a population of dirty drivers. The fact that this is GTA makes it even worse because players have a certain desire to break rules and such. A sort of biggest bully gets the prize.

Laggy Hosts

This is kind of a luck of the draw, you know? Its simply bad luck if you get a crappy host, I had on last night and it was driving me crazy. My solution is to just play with your buddies.

Well this is all good and dandy but I still feel it is possible to find decent drivers and races in GTAO. I suppose I can understand with your notion of not having to join a crew to find a decent race, but honestly it really is the best way to go if you actually want to make a difference on your gameplay. I fell like Rockstar put out a pretty solid game and it seems its the players running it for the players and not the game being bullsh*t. I would submit to you that being aggressive towards dirty drivers is the way to go, but don't be overly aggressive. But I won't try to coach or anything, you do what you think is right bro.

Good luck on your future prospects bud!

Krypt0nite1989

I do like the ghost idea as well. I can't stand dirty racers but I have learned how to make them crash when they are trying to spin me out. It does not work all the time but you learn only when you lose, not when you're winning all the time.

Good idea. Kudos.

You should play with friends or join a crew tho. Im telling you this because thats just the way it is.

You are complaining about about pub races. hence the only way to deal with it is do do exactly what you don't want too. Which is join a crew.

Just sayin'...

While it's true that Catchup has helped me win a few races, after doing some mistakes. My opinions remain as such it has a way too big impact.

It would be nice if this catchup wore off as players start getting closer, so you being 1st doesn't always mean a permanent speed limitation. Because as it stands currently, and as mentioned above - staying in 2nd/3rd place only to make use of Catchup + Slipstream just before the finish line is a perfectly viable strategy. Which is, if you ask me - ridiculous.

I had some nightmare races last night but this afternoon I raced with the same 3 guys for 2 hours solid and it was excellent no cheating just clean racing. It was one of my brothers created races and catch up and slip streaming were off. I wish more people were like this as it made GTAO very enjoyable. We all made good money and RP too.

I love racing :)

Im with ya OP. Ive never been so disappointed in a race game. I remember playing NFS World when it came out and this is the same thing. They fixed it with Ghost opponents, but even then it takes away from the racing. feels like your in SP.

It really comes down to the opponents/players. Most of the players here arent into racing, the racing just happens to be in the game. I doubt many even play a real race game ie:Forza, so crashing and smashing is all they know. With this weekend being a 50% bonus weekend (for land races), it should be pretty busy in the races, but since as you say its all about smash em up what good will it do. Personally I CANT play that way. My brain and integrity will not let me play dirty, especially racing. If I win by bashing everyone, I havent really won in my book. It as if these people WANT to crash you. Its not about the race, its about the "Haha I wrecked you!".

I think its really funny that GTA mode hardly gets any play, while so many who love to ruin others runs play standard. Does anyone play Rally? Honestly I stopped racing against people I don't know, because its a waste of effort.

catchup- totally sucks because of the reasons mentioned, include slipstream, anything that gives someone behind you an advantage is stupid. What's the point in racing then?

Ghost mode- that woul dbe cool, I think it would be ideal if it would then shut off for the last checkpoint (or 3) so that if you and a similar car are side by side without any gain, you can have some competitive rubbing to try to pull ahead [sounds dirty but you know what I mean].

Laggy hosts-that's just a part of online gaming, always will be.

Summary- allow a secondary option for "realistic" racing when starting/joining a job, this would default to no slipstream or catchup and not be able to be turned off. I think this would also help the demolition derby problem as well becasue I'm sure it's those who plan on crashing who want assistance to get back in the lead if they fall behind.

Misanthrope Z

that silly point to point system also sh*t all over racing imo

it'd be MUCH better if races were handled by a set waypoint, like freeroam races. and to prevent people from taking shortcuts, their cars get respawned if they're driving away from the waypoint for too long/if they get too far away from it (like in some REAL racing games, where your car respawns on track if you're knocked off).

the whole "checkpoint" thing is nonsense because there's a lot of instances where you'll find that you jumped over a checkpoint, meaning you have to backtrack thanks to a stupidly placed ramp, or you're on a wide highway and again, you have to make a U-turn because you missed the checkpoint by like an inch. and then there's the instances where more than one car is coming up on a checkpoint. through my experience, that's when most of the ramming happens, because at some points, checkpoints FORCE you to drive on a certain part of the road, in the middle of a cluster of rammers, rather than keeping your distance and maybe slowly passing by a potential pile-up.

i'm not saying get rid of it, as i'm sure many people prefer it, but at least make a waypoint mode, checkpoints are really stupid in races half the time
