Is it possible to finish the game playing with the top down camera?

The game included the GTA 1 and 2 top down camera as a selectable camera for cars and on foot. It's probably just there for the novelty of it but I was wondering if it would be possible for a hardcore gamer to finish the whole game like that. I remember it was really hard playing it that way.

I've done it before. The driving isn't as difficult as you'd expect because the faster you go, the less cars that spawn in front of you (same for the cinematic camera). It's the shooting of enemies that's the difficult part because you can't see them for the most part.

Shameless plug but you can see what the combat and driving is like here:

With peoples knowledge of enemy spawns etc in each mission, I would have thought somebody has done it.

If not, somebody has the right to say: challenge accepted! This would be an interesting playthrough to watch.

I tried it once. I literally couldn't do it :(

Not only that but you have a godawful sense of scale, like how far away a shooter is or even where a shooter is for that matter.

I think it is possible. I've done this game 20+ times. Maybe I'll try it someday.

Good challenge. I think it is impossible, mostly because you are not able to shoot enemies which are above or below your position (e.g. on a roof).

Classic controls + autoaim ;)

I think you can get the most fun doing side missions in topdown-view, which are mainly driving missions.
What I didn't like is that you can't run backwards anymore in Gta3 topdown (you could in gta2).

Driving missions shouldn't be that difficult? Surely missions that involve lots of shooting should be harder, I'd be afraid of doing Bomb Da Base Act II in the top-down view.

but I still think Bait is going to be a pain in the ass because of the crappy Cartel AI. Like I said in my opening post, the driving becomes a problem at low to medium speeds because traffic still spawns. I can't speed away from the Cartel in Pike Creek because they'll end up getting lost, and if I take it too slow I might end up hitting a pedestrian car and getting stuck. Then the Cartel will get out of the car and either decimate me or get run over by another pedestrian thus failing the mission.

Bomb Da Base Act II shouldn't be too hard because I won't be locking on to any pedestrians on accident. It's just a matter of dispatching them before 8 Ball runs into their crosshairs. Kingdom Come and Liberator are going to be pains in the ass for sure though.

Certainly, it's pretty difficult but if you played older GTA games then it should be slightly easier.

I wanted to give this a try, but I never got around to it in the end - I can imagine it being difficult but, nothing is impossible. In fact, I'm sure it will be a fun challenge :D

Also, nice videos Ermac. :^:

Apologies for the bump, but I really couldn't have been any more wrong. For some reason you can (and will) lock on to 8-Ball if he manages to get in the way. To add to that, the auto-aim is being even sh*ttier than usual, refusing to lock on to Cartel members standing behind waist high cover and whatnot.

I thought the sniper rifle was manual aiming no matter what...

or am I missing something?

It is, but using it would defeat the purpose of the top down playthrough because the view would go into first person.

Yeah, I know. I thought using the sniper rifle was an exception.

I recently started a new game. I might do the entire playthrough like this aswell.

Also, Payday For Ray* might be another problem: the camera doesn't let you use the top down view when you go inside the tunnel.

*Edit: I meant "Marked man".
