It's not a free add on, they just gave it a pretentious name when it's just plain multiplayer! So was multiplayer on GTA IV free to play as well?

What you payed for was the right to use Rockstars creation, in other words you payed for the disc and everything on that disc. GTAO is a seperate server based, not disc based service that is provided free of charge.

People wouldn't call it free to play if TT and R* didn't call it that themselves, since it operates just the same as other multiplayer modes for games.

You can't play Online without the main game, so it isn't free to play, really. It's part of the package you get with the game, whether some corporation says so or not.

They get away with it because it launched after the game came out and has microtransactions (even though most AAA games have these now.)

Also "free to play" is a buzzword. And companies in this industry love their buzzwords.

But...Of course you have to purchase the main game...Isn't that a god damn given?

Did you pay for GTAO online to be added/enabled to your copy of GTA V?

Are you currently paying to play GTA Online?

Ask yourself those questions then again, look at the definition of the actual term free to play that I posted.

dumbass

Oh really? So if its "Free to play" where is my "free online only" copy of the game that costs $0.00 ? Because I paid $60.00 for this game, its not free to play.

I paid $60.00 for a game that advertised single and multi-player in its advertisements. Unless you want to give me my "free online only copy" of the game, then dont say its "free to play" if it was then I wouldnt have to spend money on it just to get the game

This.

It's free for anyone who bought the game. Not free-to-play.

Free-to-play is that: you can play without paying a single cent (except for, obviously, Internet and the hardware you are playing on).

You have to buy GTA V in order to use it's free content. Again, not free-to-play.

So OP is pretty much saying "don't support the developer"? Is he also implying that people need to buy shark cards to get these items? Lmao, because that's definitely not the case.....

You are defending that it is "free to play", correct? And one of your points is that it requires an initial purchase. Do you see the problem here? That purchase makes it so it isn't free to play. Because it isn't optional. There is no way to play Online without spending money.

Compare GTA: O to a real free to play game like Loadout.

Online is free to play.

Free-to-play (F2P) refers to video games which gives players access to a significant portion of their content without paying.

THIS is what free to play means. Use a different term if you want to make any sense.

I was suggesting that they push you in that direction, but you could grind from missions and if you're so inclined you could also glitch... I'm sure there's still a million ways to get money illegitimately.

Seriously though, you guys really need to read the first post in this thread. In the context the people he quoted are using the term "free to play" in they are talking about it not having a subscription fee, which it doesnt.

By your definition every online component of a game is free to play... So the new Titanfall which I believe is multiplayer only... is that free to play as well?

Dude lol, in the quote that you posted they are using the term "f2p" in the context that it doesn't have a subscription fee, which it doesn't.

And just for the record Titanfall has a campaign, it's just integrated into the Multiplayer, there are more than 1 Multiplayer modes.

I over paid to play and I love this game.

Call me what you want but nothing tops this game imo.

I have Ce and 2 cash cards.

Although I didnt have to pay for the cash cards(gift cards) and still have one more that I can use I'll gladly overpay for the best game I know.

Rockstar have chosen to define gtao as a separate product, given away free with gtav. You can disagree with their definition, but its their product to define.

You're paying for GTAV, regardless if you have the intent to buy the the game just for GTAO, that's great but that doesn't change the fact that you purchased GTAV with GTAO as a free add on to the base game. A free add on, that again has no subscription fee.

AGAIN:

Free-to-play (F2P) refers to video games which gives players access to a significant portion of their content without paying.

Free to play games are free to download and play. You CANNOT play GTA Online without buying GTA5. You list the definition of it right in your post, and you're still wrong. We cannot access ANY of the online portion of GTA WITHOUT paying. Just because R* calls it GTA Online does NOT make it a separate game. It is the multiplayer portion of GTA5. It's as simple as that. If we went with your argument, then the same applies to all games. In that case, 99% of the games we all play right now are all F2P.

The GAME isnt free to play. Online is NOT FREE because ONLINE REQUIRES you to BUY the game to access it. Any game that requires you to spent money to acess it is NOT free to play.

Free to play games are games you dont have to spent a single cent to play. GTA players had to spent $60.00 to even get. Its not free to play.

I think I see your point, but I disagree. You think it's free to play because we don't pay specifically for it? It's advertised on the back of my game box as something featured in the GTA V product. A product that costs money. So I'm not playing Online for free, because of that initial purchase.

At least agree that it isn't the traditional "free to play" game model we see on mobile platforms, Steam and whatnot.

In the context the CEO was using it in the game is F2P in terms of not having a subscription fee nor requiring any additional $ to have it enabled on your pre-purchased copy of GTAV. This isn't speculation, this is common sense, unless people on here think the CEO of TT doesn't know GTAV costs $60.

There are different types of Free to Play models.
