Catch up only makes a difference on them type of races, if you do races with more than 2 corners and not many long straights it hardly makes a difference, if you're good you will be there or there abouts come the checkered flag.

 

Agreed catch up sucks but very rare to find a game with catch up off.

I don't think it makes someone a 'bitch' but I would leave races with catch-up on - except that there doesn't seem to be any matchmaking actually going on with Rockstar's "matchmaking" so if it's not the weekend I'd never find another populated room.

Can just imagine the OP to be one of those drivers who deliberately pits others to get ahead. Imagine then how sh*tty racing would be with catch up off. I hate being ahead of the pack then know I will be caught up, but that's just the way it is, same rules for everyone basically.

Driving a chrome Adder in a public race is like a bullseye for 'WIPE ME OUT"

Blocking players will force them to wipe you out eventually.. I do it all the time. Im not riding someones ass when i need to pass. People who zig zag back and forth trying to block racers are asking for an intentional wipe and they usually get it very easily. And then complain after, like they own the road. GTFO out of the way dooood.

 

If i come up on someone.. I expect them to MOVE over or get pushed out of the way. I move over,,, i expect the same.

^ That's how our clean racing crew does it too. You get one move to defend. After that you're driving dirty yourself, can't get too upset if a random PITs you in that situation.

edit: Also one of the main problems with moving out of the way is that if i'm getting ready to pass you, you're going to move in my way if you do that and THEN I'm going to hit you. I've had that happen to me quite a few times with one guy I race with. AT one point I told him look, stop moving out of the way you're causing accidents. It makes far more sense to keep your racing line because then you're being predictable and it's easy to pass.

That's where the skill part comes in though, for the car ahead... yeah, you COULD move over and let them pass, because sure, you are leaving yourself open for a potential spin-shunt from the chaser... But if you don't zig-zag around wildly, and just bide your time, and move ONCE, but move precisely, you don't get spun out, you get a speed BOOST courtesy of the chasing car! Choosing when to do it is key too, last thing you need is that boost on a bend... so it does require skill to stay ahead with catchup on.

 

Those battles are what makes racing in GTA fun for me - I'm not expecting a RL simulation here, there's other race games I could play to replicate the strict realism and physics of say, F1 or whatever, where, as someone here said, you only get one move to block someone (but then they don't have "catchup" on the car behind). It's a different way of implementing racing in an online game, not like others I've played, and for me the result has been a lot of fun.

@ Voodoo Ohhh I see what you're saying. Yeah that's totally fine. I just thought you expected everyone to move out of your way all the time.

Another thing people often don't realize about catchup is that if you lay off the analogue stick and put your car in a straight line as often as you get your car will usually maintain it's top speed far longer. You lose a lot of speed adjusting your cars direction as you're driving down a straight road. You can easily lose 1 to 2 seconds off your laptime if you're constantly adjusting your car.

I allow people to pass me rather than cutting them off like a sh*tface. I find that when I cut people off like a sh*tface it slows me down or destabilizes me. I find that when I don't cut them off like a sh*t face, I can take the lead back within a couple turns. When people cut me off like a sh*tface, I remember the car. If they do it twice like a super-sh*tface, I throw my race and make sure they DNF.

The only time I'll really block someone is if I'm in the lead and I can see the finish line ahead of me.

 

Alternately, I usually tend to hang back and try to make a pass at the end. I've got various tactics I use, like on commute I wait till that last center barrier is close, get slip stream beforehand and pass just as the barrier is approaching. I take take the outside road on the other side preventing them from trying to block me because they're on the other side of the barrier. It's great but a bit cheezy but hey, I won without having to wreck you.

You sum up perfectly why this can often be a good tactic - people can't handle not being able to pass someone without effort, or if they try and be overly agressive and go for spinning someone out rather than a clean pass, if it doesn't come off, if the guy in front pulls off a successful block, it rages people...

 

And people who drive angry, drive badly... people focused purely on taking someone out and not racing, wont win many races... with these balancing features like catchup and slipstreaming making the races tighter, albeit artificially, it's often the drive who keeps their head that wins, and not the guy who wiped the most folk out.

The leader owns his line, but is allowed to leave it only one time to block. He doesn't have to pull over to allow a pass.

Aye, blocking has to be done carefully and timed well, or more often than not you'll just come off worst. Most of the time letting someone pass you on a bend, and taking it wider, aiming to then out-brake them at the next turn can be safer and successful, without anyone needing to be spun off.

 

Keeping your head, choosing your moves carefully, and racing smart makes racing a lot more fun, and brings you your share of wins.
