I have to go with the classic "Golden State" plates. They look much better than the standard white plates with the red script

On a side note, I have no problem with the blue and black antique plate BUT my big pet peeve is people put them on contemporary cars, it just looks stupid.

Hey, what's wrong with having a black plate on a Tailgater? I thought it looks cool.

Personal preference, I guess. You would never see antique plates on an Audi IRL, but hey, its just a game, do what you like.

Point of reference if you are trying to match date your car.

1963 was the last year a complete new plate issuance to all vehicles occured (the plates had a black background and chrome yellow characters).

1970 is the year the basic plate was changed to a blue background with yellow characters. It was also the last year any black/yellow plates were issued.

1982 is the year when the standard plate was changed to a white background with blue characters with a sun graphic and CALIFORNIA in red block letters. It was also the last year any blue/yellow plates were issued.

1993, the word CALIFORNIA was changed to red script.

Holy sh*t, so much votes for black & yellow :/

Anyone care to elaborate why it's popular? Surely I'm missing something.... I thought blue & yellow was common.

They're based on real plates from different decades. The age of the car dictates what plate I have on it.

ditto.

@Zeus

It's like undercover cop plates or something.

I use them based on the car's production era. Only old cars deserve to use old license plates in my book. It's a respect sorta thing.

This

Seeing an Entity, Adder or any new car with a black/blue license plate makes me sick, Seems like most people don't know the different era's of those license plates. :O

New plates don't make you look like you're a police car.

Black plates on my Tailgater and Rocoto!

Yankton also works:

I Think(Not 100% sure) the color and style of the plates represent the decade of the vehicle, Not being a resident of CA i dont know for sure, but i normally leave the plate alone unless i think it hurts the looks of the car...and have a couple of hundred dollars i wanna blow on something

That's correct. Notice that the default plates of cars match very well with the year it would have been made.

Although since I can buy the black plates, you know. :)

I'll only ever choose black if they come with white letters. A 1930's plate on a chradder seems disrespectful to me somehow.

Interesting. So KITT got one of the last yellow on blue plates.

I match them with my cars if I can. If there is no matching color, usually black and yellow.

Or, most people don't give a sh*t when the real life counterpart of a car was produced, or what license plate was around in real life in that era, and just choose whatever looks good on a particular car. If that makes you sick then you have issues. Are we only supposed to paint our cars in colors that the manufacturer really used too?

Can anyone point me to a non-video description on how to get the Yankton plates?

I live in California, and in real life, I sometimes see modern cars with the blue and yellow plates (although most plates are personalized). I've also seen classic cars with the modern plates that have the cursive on top.

In the game, I see Landstalkers and Patriots with the 1980's plates that have yellow stripes at the top. The Landstalker and Patriot are based on the Ford Expedition and Hummer H2 respectively. Neither vehicle existed during the 1980's.

What if you make a car blue and yellow, and the blue and yellow plates aren't from that era? Would you rather make the plates not match the car?

Whatever matches the colour scheme of my car if in honest. Dark car - black plate. Light car - white plate.
