I'm sure most of you remember this viral 5-minute "Official Gameplay" video that drummed up massive hype for the game.

To me, I don't think at any point, the trailer lied to me (expect maybe for the "you have multiple ways to take on the heist(s) part), but the game did turn out to be less than what I expected. Granted, I think all advertisements present the most flattering aspect of things.

The college I go to advertises it's beautiful restaurants but not the inside of their prison-like dorms for example. Similarly, GTA 5 trailer advertises specific moments. It never showed, the player driving on empty non-descript mountains for minutes at a time because that wouldn't be flattering.

The trailer didn't just show some of the cool things you could do in the game, but literally all of them. Usually, when a game is advertised it ends up as something much grander than what was originally planned on paper. But GTA V wasn't like that. It was literally everything it was planned to be on paper. And nothing more. There wasn't many surprises in the game because they essentially revealed everything there was to do in the game. While I assumed that the trailer was just the beginning of the many things you could do in that world.

It does sort of remind me like toy commercials as a kid, with legos or playdoh where advertisers would make it look insanely fun for 30 seconds, but when you actually get the product, it's not nearly as exciting.

Maybe it's because my imagination wandered more than it should've or maybe Rockstar wanted the hype. Who knows, but whether we were disappointed, satisfied, or a mix of both, they got a sale from us.

So, I'm gonna place a vote on "misleading".

What about the part where it says you can buy houses with los santos real estate. For me, Rockstar strait up fed us bullsh*t about the game, I could write a list but I don't think I have to go there.

I do agree with you about them revealing literally everything the game had to offer. I mean, we had the map before the game came out or it even leaked. They said there was a big secrete, but nothing happened. Rockstar has a talent for painting a turd to look like gold.

I think they were talking about the online with the real estate. I do wish there were safehouses, but maybe it would've conflicted in the story (aka why would Michael hide in Grapeseed when he has a safehouse near Mt. Chiliad). But yeah, basically some content from the main campaign was put into the online.

Its fair. Mostly everything said was truthful, you just have to expect it to be a dulled down version of what you actually imagine it to be.

Mostly. As for what was IMPLIED. For example, the game says you can plan out your heists. But all you do is select A or B. And select the good gunman that's expensive or the cheap gunman that's bad. In some cases, you don't have any choice at all. .

This is the first time I've seen the trailer. I stayed away from gta related stuff online a few months before the game came out I didn't want to be spoiled. The trailer is fair they only lied about us having control over heists and they made it seem like we could buy property in single player. Apart from that the trailers honest although they did show us every feature in the game to make it seem bigger than it really was.

Typical gameplay trailer if you ask me

not really a typical trailer. most trailers advertise the game like an artform or a story. this one advertises the game like its a car or an electric razor

" INTRODUCING.... THE NEW RAZOR WITH FOUR LAB-APPROVED STEEL BLADES FOR A SMOOTH SHAVE"

I've seen the trailers for IV and they focused more on showing Niko Bellic and his adventures as a character.

What do you mean they lied about controlling heists?

"The player sets things up themselves, then decides how to execute them, and with whom."

Where did they lie?

"The player sets things up themselves"

You do. You get everything necessary for the heist yourself. You know, the missions everyone complains about?

"then decides how to execute them"

You do this too. You have 2 choices for every heist.

"and with whom."

And also this. You get to pick who to bring with you on the heist.

No lying in any way.

And with the property at the end, I bet it was planned, then cut. But, that's just speculation. There'd be no reason to put it in the trailer if they had no intention of it actually being in SP. That'd be retarded, actually.

It's not what they said you can do, it's the how they said you can do. Something about the trailer just felt like the game was going to be so much more alive, so much more dynamic, so much more in depth.

The game is good no doubt, but the feelings I got watching this trailer, never rose up in me while playing the game. I felt like I was playing a movie more than taking part in a living breathing world.

very misleading.

the people who made the gta 5 trailers are geniuses for making an average game look amazing.

Pretty much, darkleader. And I think I know why.

The trailer is diluted. Basically, all of those 5 minutes you see, basically derive from probably 10 hours of gameplay. It's diluted, like a pint of milk in a gallon of water.

For me, the trailer is great, but it seems more fun than the final game for some reason, maybe it's just nostalgia.

The only thing I can complain about is that they deleted some tunes for the dynamic score and they showed the Scuba dive outfit with flippers on freeroam, also a house icon on the docks, and that badass backward dive... I still can't figure out how to do it, or if it's still possible at least on the mission the flippers appear on (Merryweather Heist A and Monkey Business). During missions is easier to dive and feels fun instead of the same animation with or without the gear.

But the major problem with the trailers is that they edited way too much, using different camera angles gave me a different feel, for example I was expecting to play as Trevor when the train falls off rail, in the trailer 2 they showed him about to jump, epic! but in the final game you play as Michael and you barely see Trevor jumping from that distance. The "So now what?" scene from this trailer it's the ending, not Blitz Play, and seeing that made me expect different things from the mission when I played it.

Watching it again after having played the sh*t out of it made me notice how they managed to make the map seem a lot larger than it actually is. Don't get me wrong, the map is large, but the way the game was displayed in the trailer it made it seem like the map was massive. Another thing is how much they made it seem like there was a plethora of things to do when it came to side missions.

"Bounties to collect" = 4 non repeatable bounties

"Animals to hunt and be hunted by" = You can hunt a grand total of 5 animals and the only ones that attack you are cougars, dogs, and sharks. where the bears at yo

"Oceans to explore" = Not much to say here, there were a fair amount of goodies down there ranging from money to weapons n armor, but by the time you can afford the Sonar Dock you won't really need those things, plus collecting waste and submarine parts became boring after about 20 minutes. where's Cthulhu at doe

Eh, I guess it could be chalked up to marketing ploys and all that jazz, so who's fault is it really? R* for selling their product well, or the people who fell for the rhetoric?

Just becauser you're easily pleased doesn't mean we are. Just because you like licking rockstars boots doesn't mean we do you feel me ? We expected true freedom ! We were expecting it to be a lot more technical then

'' choose a expensive or cheap gunman the cheap gunman will always f*ck up/ the expensive one always succeeds

'' Park you're car in the areas we say it's ok'

You have two choices of heavily coded/programed hesits choose one''

'' Waste hours looking for vehicles that play a minor part in the heist''

Honestly I found those searching missions more boring and pointless than any mission on gta iv. f*ck they annoyed me by the end of it I was almost breaking down..... please god no I don't want to go looking for a swat van :( please just let me hit the block and sell drugs I would prefer it. Anything would be more fun then those collection missions

yes you do ^ I stayed away from the V hype machine as much as possible but from what I heard they made the heists out to be our creation they said it would be up to us to plan them. Now that's not the case now is it ?

So if you're not blindly defending them what are you doing i'm curious ? Don't you want V to be the best game It can be ? I'm not saying the game wasn't great i'm simply saying they made heists out to be a bigger deal than they were

but from what I heard

There's your problem. People speculated this game so much when things were barely shown.

All you have to do is look at some old threads.

People literally thought everything out of nothing.

And no, they didn't lie, as I stated. It doesn't matter how you, as a person, interpreted their heist explanation. What they said is what we got exactly.

You cannot deny that.

Pretty honest if you ask me. They outright tell you yoga and tennis will be a part of the game and the more arcadey driving is on full display.

The only thing I'm disappointed about is the property buying. They clearly show/say you can buy real estate in the trailer.

The driving is great. But they didn't tell you that yoga and tennis were only going to be fun for two-minutes max.

It's different for everybody.

Also, are they supposed to say: "Yeah, we have tennis, but you may find it boring after a while!"?

To me, I don't think at any point, the trailer lied to me (expect maybe for the "you have multiple ways to take on the heist(s) part)

What?

Said to be purchasable properties and there wasn't any in game.

Also Master the two choices still feel the same. There's always a guns blazing in both choices.

Another thing is both Tennis and Yoga get boring very fast.

That's true, but has nothing to do with this particular comment.

"Also Master the two choices still feel the same. There's always a guns blazing in both choices."

Although they may share a certain dynamic (Firefight), they certainly don't share a starting dynamic (Loud vs. Quiet).

"Another thing is both Tennis and Yoga get boring very fast."

And this is just subjective. I love tennis. I also suck badly at it, so there's some motivation behind it lol.

i'll say something objective:

tennis and yoga don't expand the open-world sandbox elements or your ability to cause chaos and destruction.

they simply distract you from it.

The cinematic production, camerawork and editing, and the interspersion of cutscenes with gameplay was greatly misleading relative to the tone of some parts of the game.

It's true we already have a pretty good sense of GTA gameplay, so we can't be too surprised, but my pet peeve with Rockstar is that they think (erroneously) that they are great moviemakers, and they take that mindset too deep into the game, including the great but misleading fun they have making exciting trailers.

A few years ago I did some projects for work, in Second Life. I wanted to summarize and market the work that I did, and so I was inspired to make a "trailer" of the features and the scenes, and added a beautifully integrated voiceover. Even I was surprised at how well it came out, and also how misleading it was in terms of showing people all the fun, easy parts in a seamless story, while the actual virtual environment was not quite as exciting and seamless.

So I know how easy it is, with simple desktop video tools, to create an impression of something, that greatly overreaches its true nature. Rockstar did this with their trailers, and I was prepared for that, but I was still disappointed by the short, cliched, derivative patchwork of a script, the linearity of the heists and the story, and the faceplant that is GTA Online.

The trailer made the game look amazing, thus it was a misleading trailer, despite how good it was. I would have been happy if GTAV turned out to be half of what the gameplay trailer made it look like.
