Welcome to the Official NASCAR Thread. This is a place for fans and newcomers to the sport to discuss everything NASCAR.

Thread was originally a UK based member asking a general NASCAR question and it quickly evolved. The first page may refer to this question, it will stay here for future reference if need be.

Hello Folks

I noticed there's no active NASCAR thread so I'll just post this here. It's the Daytona 500 this weekend and I'll be giving it a watch out of intrigued. I'm from the UK so my knowledge of it is pretty poor.

Anything I must know going in to it?

There will be no Right turns. :^:

This is 100% fact. Other than that I have no idea what, if any tactics are used.

Lol I know that much.

There are definitely tactics used but I wouldn't know them other than the obvious ones.

Watched a bit of a race before, never a full one or in any quanity so I'm intrigued and the Dayton 500 sounds like the one to watch.

Most of the tactics of nascar involve drafting. And thats pretty much it

actually there's plenty of right turns in NASCAR.

they run a handful of road courses each year.

but other than that, NASCAR sucks a dick compared Formula 1.

I'm sure being the driver is fun and the pit crews train to perform the worlds fastest oil-changes and tire-rotations, but for everyone who's just sitting there and watching, NASCAR is painfully boring

Well, here's my opinion about nascar. I started watching it in the late 90s and followed it like a hardcore fan until the mid 00s. I have also watched dozens of older races from youtube and racing torrent sites. Overall, it has really gone downhill from what it used to be.

There's many issues but the three main big ones (imo) right now are that the current generation car really sucks, in terms of putting on good racing. There were high hopes that the gen. 6 car would drastically change the sport but nothing has happened, it is still bad like it was with the previous gen. car. The only difference is visually, the car looks a bit nicer and not like some stupid metal box with a spoiler.

Second, the points system is so f*cking retarded it's not even funny. I spent years watching this sport and can't even understand it. I can only imagine what the casual fan like yourself would think of it. I don't get what was wrong with the old system, where it was so simple, whoever gained the most points during the season won the championship. But that was changed in '04, and every few years it gets more complicated with a chase system and sh*t. Third, coverage has gotten bad. Most of the commentators are boring and don't get excited about anything. You would think they would at least try to keep the fans interested if the on track action is minimal. Camera crews miss big incidents and the broadcast wastes a lot of time doing one hour or more prerace shows that nobody cares about. There's other issues too, this is like the tip of the iceberg.

So yeah, I hate nascar and regret wasting time on this f*cking sh*t! lol. I still follow it in that I read news articles and look up the race results. But I don't tune in to the races. This is just what I think, you may find it more entertaining. I should give nascar some credit though. They have some lower class touring series, which usually have good races. Unfortunately, the broadcast of these races is condensed highlights, which are shown on weekdays and on channels most people don't even have.

I do encourage you to watch other series this year, which are doing just fine. In particular, I recommend Indycar, BTCC, FIA World Rallycross and V8 supercars. Gonna be a good season :)

I've been a hardcore fan since 2002 (when I was old enough to understand it), and I agree. After 2004, it took a serious turn downhill. They continue to f*ck up the points system, and they keep saying it is "fan motivated" or some sh*t, yet I've never heard any vocal minority or majority ask for any change in points except to go back to the old system.

They also keep trying to push this sh*tty Fox Sports 1 channel, and keep taking away all the programs that went along with the races that kept me interested. Not to mention that 95% of all media coverage relating to NASCAR centers around Danica Patrick. Nobody f*cking cares. She sucks, she had one top 10 finish all of last year, yet has a high profile car and team. The one and only reason she exists in NASCAR is because she is a she. She does have talent, I will give her that. She caught on to going from Indy to stock cars fairly quickly. However, she is nowhere near the caliber that other Sprint Cup drivers are. Richard Petty was right on the money when he said that her only chance of winning a NASCAR race was if she was the only one on the track.

But I have a feeling that this Daytona 500 will not be a snorefest like last year's (driving single file for 198 laps). Today's practice session alone has had more excitement than last year's entire 500:

And at the Sprint Unlimited, there was more excitement:

I've been following it on Bleacher Report and catching a few clips from previous races. I'm still intrigued enough to give it a watch. That's a lie, I'm actually pretty excited. I haven't sat down to watch a full race of anything (other than the Grand National but that was because I had some money riding on it) since I was a kid and watched F1 with my da. NASCAR's a novelty over here in general.

It's a shame its not 2004 but oh well. I saw highlights from 2007. Was pretty frantic. Though there were barely any wide shots after crashes so it was really hard to gauge the damage done across the board. Saw that practice video and they did then so hopefully that's something they do now.

Should I dip my toe in the water with the Duels tonight?

Edit: We'll probably watch a bit of the pre-race to learn a little more. I just read some of the chase rules btw, made my head spin lol.

Ex Hellraiser, you're right. I don't even get FS1 or FS2, so I automatically miss all cup practice and qualifying sessions, and truck and arca races unless if I watch an internet stream or dl them later. I know they are trying to push other sports on FS1, like college basketball and things not even related to racing. Speed was kind of crummy in it's final years but at least Speed had more racing and auto programs.

And yeah, this Speedweeks has been eventful so far in terms of the carnage. When that flip happened yesterday I saw people talking about it and thought they were joking until I looked the clip up on youtube.

Well, one upside to pre-500 Speedweeks is that NASCAR is actually offering RaceView for free for the Duels. I've never had the chance to try Raceview because it costs too f*cking much. In addition, last year, one race offered Raceview for free. However, I get an email from NASCAR.com at 2 am Monday morning that they were offering Raceview for free (12 hours after the race ended...).

At least I get some kind of way to follow the Duels.

We don't even have a single points race in yet...

ok see, there's more of my problem with NASCAR and NASCAR fans.

their idea of a highlight reel = crashing.

seems like most people only watch or get excited about the wrecks... not the actual art of the sport.

Well, that isn't me. While, of course, I am entertained by crashes (when there aren't injuries) they aren't the primary reason I watch it. But I see your point. There is a much larger percentage of people who watch NASCAR for crashes than there are for F1 or NHRA, or people who watch American football to watch people get concussions and torn ACLs :p

I too get frustrated at that part of the crowd, as they are what really gives the sport a bad light. Although, nowadays, there are a lot more reasons the sport is in a bad light than the fans (points system, overdramatizing, too much product placement, etc), that doesn't make it any better.

In reference to my comment, I didn't make it wholly on the premise of "ooohhhh lookey another crash!!" more like "wow, this season will be really unpredictable if more races end up like this"

Waiting for the 500

And frankly out of any racing series out there NASCAR by far has the most interesting unlike f1 which is a bunch of rich people who wanted cars that you need a degree in rocket science to build

Not really. F1 is full of rich drivers. But many drivers in any of the top NASCAR series are also VERY rich. It takes money to run in NASCAR. Money comes from sponsorship and how much the driver can support the team with. Don't believe it? There's a bunch of drivers who aren't that great but still have rides. For example, look at Eric McClure, he's raced for over 10 years and has sucked horribly, despite always having sponsorship. He's a pay driver. Same thing with Paul Menard. Although Menard has improved a bit. And the thing is, this is true in most motorsports now. There are no more "poor racers" left. You just can't bring your friends and a junked up car to the track like the old days. Check out your local tracks if you want to see real racing, in terms of ordinary people racing on a tight budget and low resources.

However, I do agree with you that F1 isn't that interesting. I've tried watching it and just couldn't get into it. It's like the cars are on auto pilot sometimes and I just didn't see that much racing. This was a few years ago, so it may be better now.

As for the race, I know I said I wouldn't tune in :p but I've been watching some of it since it restarted and it's been good actually. It seems like everyone is more aggressive knowing that another rain event could end the race early.

It doesn't apply on the last lap. If a caution happens on the last lap, everyone's positions are frozen, and they are scored at the moment the caution flew.

Gordon got bumped to 4th? What the hell.
