You gotta love Denmark

It's times like these, I am proud to be Danish.

A bid to save a young giraffe from destruction at Copenhagen Zoo has failed, and the giraffe was put down on Sunday morning.

Thousands of people had signed an online petition appealing for a change of heart over the two-year-old called Marius.

The zoo said it had no choice because of its duty to avoid in-breeding.

Marius was killed by a bolt gun, not a lethal injection, which would contaminate the meat.

A post-mortem examination was broadcast live on the internet.

A crowd of visitors, including children, watched as the carcass was skinned, cut up and fed to the lions.

Hey atleast they used the giraffe as they fed it to the lions. They probably shouldn't of done what they did in front of visitors but I have no real problem with what they did.

Would it not have been cheaper to just let the animal 'free' into the Lion cage and let nature do its job? But with unemployment high I guess it was needed?

The whole event was used as educational material on giraffe anatomy.

The fact that the man responsible for feeding the giraffe to the lions gets death threats is much more disturbing than the actual story.

PS: Horray from now on everyone in the EU can eat genetically modified corn. I hope it will be smart enough to walk into my mouth by itself.

This story disgusted me, too, but what do you mean "Denmark"?

Every Danish citizen got together and decided this? The government of Denmark ordered this? Every Dane agrees with this? I can assure you, they do not. Some of my first cousins are Danish and live in Copenhagen/Aarhus, they are also disgusted by this and do not agree with it.

It was a zoo director in Denmark. He does not represent all Danes or the Danish citizens.

Maybe I am biased because my father was Danish but Danes are some of the nicest people I have ever met. That being said, there are bad apples in every society.

Anyway, I realize you were propably just saying that but point is, it doesn't represent the whole country.

What irks me the most is, other zoos offered to take him. Their policy is to not sell their animals, as they had a few interested buyers, but why not transfer him to another zoo that offered then?

There was no need to put him down and then chop him up in front of everyone. It's a shame because he was only 18 months old and I'm sure his keepers and him were already attached.

I see you're Danish but come on, don't lump your whole country together like everyone else is. It's sad that this is all people pay attention to when it comes to countries like Denmark because they have a lot if other things to offer.

Audiophile obviously does not understand sarcasm nor irony.

In addition, I fully support the Zoo in what it did. It tried hard to find potential buyers, but none of them met their requirements. This was not something they just decided on a wimp.

Further proof Denmark lacks any clear sense of right and wrong and needs Sweden to rule them for moral guidance.

If anything Denmark does offends Sweden, I am a proud man. That is the common goal of all Danes.

Svip, I did say you're probably just saying that but I expressed my view anyways.

I can detect irony and sarcasm, I just don't give a sh*t for it.

Lombard Direct

Giraffes are pretty remarkable creatures. I find this whole thing utterly gut wrenching. So much for the Nordic socialist utopia.

Edit: They should have just auctioned thing.

They knew when it was born that it was surplus. They just fattened it to make it worth slaughtering. Cheaper than buying the meat.

They could have aborted it, plastinated the foetus and auctioned it.

This is not a statement on the morality of such an action.

The giraffe's demise wouldn't have bothered me so much had I not watched Anton Sugar's preferred technique of ridding career obstacles.

I literally don't see what the big deal is.

I guess I don't find giraffes cute enough.

this seems like a lot of phony outrage to me.

There are plenty of animals treated and killed far less humane than this giraffe, and even in the West (hell, even in Denmark). Where is the outrage there?

Much of their reasoning for rejecting so many potential buyers has a lot to do with biology and genetics. Concepts that can be hard to understand if you are not familiar with the issues surrounding the survival of giraffes.

If Denmark was socialist utopia, the Giraffe meat would have been shared between the Zoo management.

Social-Democracy is not Socialism.

I thought there was a zoo willing to take the animal. That's what I don't get.

Also, I wonder what giraffe tastes like.

This is disturbing...This is not science, putting down a healthy giraffe and cutting it up and feeding it to the lions, in front of an audience of children and adults. This is to prevent inbreeding. What are they teaching children? It's not the circle of life when a lot of people would have cared for the giraffe or let it live at their zoo instead. It was just senseless killing that was totally unnecessary.

Except, you know, it happens all the time at many zoos, everywhere. This one has only gotten public attention because the zoo decided it was worth making it educational. Giraffes in captivity (because it is illegal to capture giraffes in the wild these days) could become extinct if their genetics are impure.

There's a lot of outrage, but you people tend to denounce anyone who protests this stuff as fruits, or if they go the opposite way and commit acts of violence, as terrorists.

Anyway f*ck this fa**oty zoo director and f*ck you idiots.

Which is unfortunate and even more sad! Even if this kind of stuff happens "everywhere" it will never be okay in my books. There was something wrong with the zoo director in my opinion because he ignored everyone who tried to save the giraffe and rather it be dead instead. Why does he even work at a zoo if he doesn't even value the life of one animal?

This forum has a standard of being up it's own ass and self absorbed and usually my response is just snarky comments to amuse myself. This is different though, I don't see why anyone would not think this is unacceptable, never mind actively lauding this as if it's some great occurrence. I understand that acting like you don't give a f*ck and you're a chest beating manly man makes some people feel worthwhile, but this is inexcusable.

As for the adjective fa**oty, well it's a character insult, not a homophobic slur.

That doesn't seem like an appropriate insult, though.

Would you be okay if I called you a retarded n***er f*g? No offense to blacks, or the mentally disabled, or homosexuals.

Again, you are lacking information. The zoo did not ignore them. This was a decision that took a long time to make, because they actually did search for potential buyers. But none of their buyers lived up to the requirements they had for the giraffe's well being.

If some random person decided to pay for the giraffe, that doesn't mean they have the facility or the ability to take care of it. In addition, they also did not want the giraffe polluting other zoo's giraffe genetic pools.
