Ed2896
I love the map, I think everything's is laid out perfectly and looks amazing but it's always confused me as to why there's a desert in the middle of the countryside. It just seems so random, and it's not even a massive one, just a small one. Is this even realistic? theGTAking101
Francis44
I guess the ideia is that the alamo sea is so salty that no significant ground life form can really live in the areas around it.
HOW'S ANNIE?
No it's not realistic at all, yet what is in a GTA game? But I do think that the Alamo Sea should have been removed to make the desert area a bit bigger. theGTAking101
Osho
Umm... let me guess, because it's supposed to be a game. A game that has such perfect portrayal of real life city, where you can't enter restaurants, casino, malls, or play basketball but can enter banks, army base and also enjoy even f*cking yoga. Damn, the desert part isn't that unusual or unreal AT ALL.
Captain Arthur
Is this even realistic? No, it's not, because it's a GTA game. This is the type of game where we see a middle-aged retired bank robber return back to the life of crime, steal nuclear weapons for corrupt FIB agents and wear this: Rainbow Party, grumpy cat meme, Bonnano and 2 others
high91
^^^ This is a good post I think a little less ocean..combined with the enlarging of the desert area with the layout in the same position. More trees in the countryside (wont happen due to limitations) In fact GTA 5 is kind of perfect compared to other games that now just suck donkey balls. No game I have matches up to GTA 5 in every aspect, a few minor annoyances here and there but that is life Captain Arthur and ViceCityStalker
~Tiger~
The map is a microcosm, a miniature world which features many representations of the real world. City, coast, desert, forest, mountain, lake, valley and plains are all represented for the purposes of gameplay. It is neither realistic nor confusing, it's just a game. backfromthestorm and high91
Red XIII
I agree, the desert should of been put on the edge of the map, maybe the desert should of been the most northern part of the map so mt chilliad is kind of in the middle. BTW you must not think the map is layed out perfectly like you said otherwise this topic wouldn't exist
backfromthestorm
Not really sure they needed the Alamo sea... How many missions used it? I can't think.... Just the triathlons? Big waste of space really.. could of had a big enterable shopping mall complex with cinemas, swimming pools etc.. all indoors. Just one idea off the top of my head. Better than water anyway. Choco Taco
They're saving the large desert and dense forest for when they add Las Venturas and San Fierro to complete the state of San Andreas in GTA VI. I hope.

It just seems so random, and it's not even a massive one, just a small one. Is this even realistic? Realistic? Had the desert been the size of the full map it would still not be realistic. The size of the mountains are not realistic, the city is not realistic. Its only a game, with a beautiful map. San Andreas was not realistic but very few whined about it. I think the size of the desert is pretty nice, but sure, it could've been bigger. I'm personally a huge fan of the desert and Trevor's missions out the desert. I wish they would've had more of them. Ideally, my perfect desert would've looked more like this: boxmonster

Really.. you think it's the same amount of work to make malls, cinemas and all those interiors with hundreds of objects inside as it is to make a body of water? OP you need to take into account that all GTA maps are largely condensed. Real life Los Angeles is about 100 time (yes one hundred times) larger in surface than LS. They just wanted to have a diverse map with what they could make, and it's also based on real life location so it all looks very natural. The only thing that makes is unnatural is the scale, but it wouldn't be fun to have a 100 times bigger desert trust me.
McGyver55
Why do people complain about the ocean? Its a map barrier... either the game developers model a whole planet or have a force field that stops you from wandering too far... OR they create a plausible barrier that you can explore to some extent but doesn't really have too much system taxing details... perhaps a 1980s type map where land extended to its borders but characters scroll over to the other side when they go too far would be more realistic? The ocean is a good balance. Of all the stupid little quirks in the game the map is just fine as it is, I'd have liked there to be some dense forest, but there probably is some processing power issues for that no being so...we'll see if the PC version has better forests perhaps... Is the desert realistic? No... but it is realistic as we are going to see using this game engine and on these consoles and within the timeframe allotted by the developers to produce a game of this nature based on when they started the project. In one scene in the game Trevor tells Lamar that the trip they are going to take is a 4 hour drive, which in real life would not be an unrealistic timeframe to travel from LA to the Boonies... Anyone want to spend 4 real hours driving with Lamar listening to aimless pre-scripted smalltalk dialog, while Franklin snores in the backseat? Stuff has to be condensed to some point, barriers placed and travel time made less boring... you have to have a balance between real and game... and for the most part they did a pretty good job (in regards to the OP and general comments here)... yeah, there are loads of other stuff that would have been awesome to have... like the ability to pick up objects and carry them, play basketball, working dock cranes, playable arcade games, more usable vending machines... whatever, maybe we will get them in GTA 6, but probably not... Either way... its a fine line between driving an over-the-top supercar off a mountain and sitting in traffic for 5 hours, having to pee... I'll take over-the-top... please. Rainbow Party
perhaps a 1980s type map where land extended to its borders but characters scroll over to the other side when they go too far would be more realistic? Heh, that would be pretty weird but it might work. It really blew my mind in that old game 1nsane but it made perfect sense there because the game was all about driving off road and the maps were quite small. I think the sea is okay, GTA 3 was realistic with its blocked tunnels but that felt very frustrating.
Elvis_Mazur
There's a desert around Salton Sea, near Los Angeles. I guess they were trying to be as realistic as they could with the game.
iiGh0STt
The map in this game is horrible. RDR made this map look bad... how old is RDR? are there multi levels subways, skyscrapers, massive amounts of subway and tunnels intersecting with each other, etc. etc.. in rdr? Nope.... But there is a good amount of terrain detail. which is one thing that I would expect from a would be next gen era game, especially on the level GTA V is on. not only terrain detail, but more detail for roads and some type of elevation meter, maybe grid lines... this thing belongs on an old 2d Mario game. Pathetic effort on their part and sub par for this games standards. MORE WINE! my defense: if anyone has a pic of the in game map for gta please post it. so flat, so congested. yes, it can be followed and the city will always be congested and hard to follow, but it was half assed. little to no detail and whats with the clear background? that just makes it harder to see around what you have already explored until you explore every cm of it.
