How exactly is GTA V the most "advanced game"?

Other than the graphics and the lighting (which is cumilatively only a little better than other 2013 games), what makes this game the most advanced game ever (as many people claim)?

The way I see it is:

- The content is lacking as there's many opportunities (examples: Gang wars, Film studio, Drug running, police/ambulance/fire missions, heists, bank robberies, gambling etc) but very few are taken and the vast majority is ignored.

- Huge map but you only have 1 (or 2 for Trevor) safehouse(s) and if you have a car you really want in Paleto bay and want to keep it, you have to drive all the way back to Los Santos, over 5 miles away.

- The vehicle's handling is very arcade-like and, especially with flying vehicles, very hard to keep control of.

- The AI is very much lacking. Driving on a windy road, you tend to have oncoming NPCs driving at you or stopping hard on corners to avoid you, even though you've not left your lane and they tend to get angry with you and either run away or attack you when you decide to take in the city on foot.

- The police tend to shoot at you rather than arrest you even when you're stopped for them and they seem to develop warp speed and ram into the back of your vehicle regardless of how fast you're going (I was once in a Coquette at full speed and a cop slammed into the back of me and wrecked my car).

- Vehicular damage is poor as high-speed crashes tend to leave little damage but low speed crashes tend to leave much damage and when you armour your vehicle, lights and windows can be smashed very easily and you can still be thrown through the front window on collision. If you clip the wing in a plane, after a while, the engine will cut out and you'll be forced to bring it down.

- Many features within the game which are "advanced" are either copies of things in different games or a slightly tweaked version of features in other games. Very little seems to be "revolutionary" or "advanced".

- Lots of money at the end, not much to spend it on. Once you've brought all the businesses, you find yourself making some serious dough but have little to spend it on - a similar issue with GTA IV.

- Average storyline, OK missions but little to do once you've completed them and can't think of anything else to do. I've taken cop cars and posed as a cop (trolled by police every 10 seconds), I've been diving and exploring which is too easy and you don't see much new after the first hour or so and have run out of things to do save driving around aimlessly and killing sprees.

All of these and much more make me question why is the game considered "advanced", "revolutionary" and "a giant leap in gaming" when frankly, save the graphics and lighting (but only just), it's just not worthy of those claims.

EDIT:

Watch videos and reviews from IGN, Gamestop and Game Informer as well as a number of other places. They all say it is advanced and ambitious or words to that effect.

Furthermore. I am DEFINITELY NOT saying GTA V is a bad game. I am pointing out reasons why it isn't as good as IGN, Gamestop and the like and claiming it.

It's a great game, but "greatest"? I would have to say not. Hit? Yes. Bullseye? No.

Well, I liked it :)

However, I cannot remember reading it being described as the 'Most Advanced Game Ever'.

The graphics, lighting effects and draw distance are certainly impressive, as you mention. Considering the age of the console platforms it's currently optimised for (I suspect it will look even better on upcoming platforms...).

Being able to play as 3 different protagonists in an interconnected storyline is not something I've been able to do in any previous sandbox game. That surely counts as 'Advanced'

Plus (depending on the ending you choose) you get to free roam with all three, across a huge sandbox in all manner of vehicles, land air and sea. Tried stealing sh*t from the Zancudo base on your own? Try it with Michael, Franklin AND Trevor, and see how much more destruction is possible. (or not, if they all get hit by the same tank shell)...

The majority of your other points seem mainly concerned with your own opinions about aspects of gameplay mechanics, and how they are different from previous GTAs or other similar titles, there are plenty of other threads here dedicated to criticising those specific concerns.

If you've finished the story, then explored and haven't seen much new after after the first hour or so, you may have missed a great deal...

As current Gen (is it still current Gen, when Next Gen is out, but there aren't any good games yet?) sandbox games go, it's pretty good.

Not sure what the most suitable adjective is, maybe not 'Revolutionary' but I'll go with 'Impressive'.

We are very proud to officially announce that Grand Theft Auto V is in full development.

Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created.

A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay
an
d online multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present day Southern California.

If that doesn't read '' most advanced rockstar game ever'' than I don't know what does.......

I love V it's really grown on me these past couple of weeks but topic starter makes good points. People bash IV's A.I I personally think they've been snorting coke because in IV I can walk around the streets without cops being called on me and i'm playing as an illegal immigrant in liberty city when the terrorist attacks are fresh in peoples minds most people would look at Niko and think '' teriorst'' because of the fear in peoples minds due to the attacks. So don't give me that '' the peds are racist against franklin or trevor looks pyscho i'd call the cops on him'' If you should be scared of anyone it should be niko if you're racial profiling.

That leads into my argument that cops in IV are way better. IV cops arrest you they don't try and kill you from the start. If you have a low wanted level the cops will give you a chance to surrender. Also I can bait peds in IV into a fight with me and if the cops turn up and see the ped hitting me they arrest the ped ! Go figure ! In V it's vice city all over again ( remember vc had ps2 technology) you get the blame for everything the cops don't notice peds causing crimes at all in V...............

The car damage in IV is a lot better topic starter already explained that.

Karaoke in sleeping dogs was fun so was dancing in TBOGT can anybody on this forum honestly say they played yoga many times and did so because it was fun and played it purely for entertainment reasons ? I'd go bowling for fun iv IV so much so roman wouldn't come with me anymore because I played it that much... im serious roman got mad at me because I was bowling to much......... now I understand some people might like yoga and theirs nothing wrong with liking it.

It's just that the people I've met online like those minigames I mentioned the only yoga defenders I see point out it helps raise michaels special stat...... they didn't say they enjoyed it '' it's their its not big deal'' is usually what I hear from them.

I could go on and probably will if this thread becomes active. I LOVE V I DO..... BUT...................it's not the A++ game we all expected. That might seem unfair but sleeping dogs was a B- at worst and that game had no hype or endless millions invested in it like V

"largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has created" is not synonymous with "most advanced game ever"... though I can understand the confusion.

I would say that it is the largest and very ambitious (especially in managing to use the current gen technology to its absolute max) in a number of ways.

I had fun with it but, like with RDR, I can tell you that by the time I reach 100% I'll find little else to do. Unlike RDR, however, I'm looking forward to starting the game all over again and timing things differently (like I did with all of the other GTA games)... and I considered RDR the best Rockstar game ever as far as story and gameplay mechanics go.

Personally, I like the NY setting of GTA IV more than LA, but I love the different geographical areas/settings in GTA V. There is much more to *explore*... for a while.

GTA V is definitely in my top 10 favourite games of all time, probably in my top 5 even. It is an excellent game and, I think, lived up to the hype.

R* can call it what they want because it's their game, and I'm sure it is their biggest, most ambitious game ever. And I agree with some of the individual points in the OP, but that's not a fair assessment of the game as a whole. You have to realize the simple fact that you're talking about ONE game. Of course other games did this or that better, but that's because R*'s goals are always bigger than their capabilities. That's the difference between a truly ambitious developer like R*, and whoever you're comparing them to.

They never have enough time or technology or whatever, but it never changes their goals. They're still gonna make a huge open world and try to give us the ability to do as much stuff as possible. I don't agree with all their decisions, but it's hard to hate on their ambition. When you consider their true goals for the future of the series, it's easy to tell why they always come up short for many fans.

The good news is one day their ambition, our expectations, and their final product will match up perfectly, and it will be bliss. :santa:

Ah, Most ambitious Rockstar game. Got ya :)

To be fair, it probably is, I'm a big fan of previous RS releases, GTA III was ground breaking, Vice City was brilliant (still have it on my PC) IV and the resulting DLC were subject to heavy criticism after release too, but I got a lot of happy hours out of them.

RDR is perhaps the greatest narrative RS have produced (my opinion) in an open world game, and while I loved it (it was a solid well told tale, with plenty of darkness and mature themes ) I wouldn't call it as advanced as V in terms of ambition.

I have criticisms of V, agreed the money should have been better distributed (ie: early game, Graft for those dollars, finish game - more money than you can spend). The property acquisition needs addressing too, too much attention to online over SP in this instance IMO).

GTA V was probably the most hyped game of last year (or last Gen) That's gotta be hard to live up to, everyone's gonna miss features they expected due to the hype.

Wow, this is a pretty good considered discussion for a critique thread, nobody's invoked the Nazis or called anyone a F*cking C*ckhole yet :)

Let me start by saying V is a very good game. It's beautiful and has some epic moments in. I enjoy playing it.

But it is not, by far, R*'s masterpiece - the reason i think it gets a lot of complaints is because R* marketed it (via implication and encouraged inference) as "the big one" - the game to end all games. We hyped it up far beyond what R* and current hardware can provide.

To get the big, gorgeous map they had to compromise on some things
To get the tricharacter dynamic they had to compromise on things.

They focused too much on redefining things, they forgot that they'd mastered the previous. The tricharacter thing is a great idea, but poorly implemented.
The story in V is pretty poor imho (please read that acronym, i stress that), and this is all to make room for "new" things.

V added offroading (i.e. 2 races) street races (GTA IV had more variety in races) etc etc - but to do this it removed so much - several activities, a sh*t load of missions (apparantly Rockstar are no longer aware of storyline dynamics - quite, slow sections make the faster bits more exciting by contrast).

V is great, but only because it substituted features with different ones, and made it APPEAR as though it was huge and groundbreaking.

It wasn't. IMHO IV is a much better game. Everything was focused and while it wasn't perfect, I played that for hours and hours. V i played for so long just to try to get the stocks to work so i'd have some money to enjoy in the game. So unrewarding imho.

As said, III was a pioneer - one of the most important games ever imho. VC was my favourite for so long. SA was great - preferred VC, but hey. LCS/VCs were okay. IV was a masterpiece (even with its flaws). V was an anticlimax. Like when you're having sex, you're about to blow and you slip out, and then it's all over. Damn.

VI? Well, i honestly dread to think

yea, cops in this game shoot you just for staring at them or verbally assaulting them. Even In the ancient Vice City, they chase you down using non lethal force 1st. You forgot to mention the lack of options: you can't turn off kill indicators/screen flash and you can't turn off cinematic score. You can't even pull out guns/beat people up in clothing stores or Strip Clubs.

I'm going to stop you there. That is true for absolutely any game. All games could have more content but don't. Everyone always wants more than what they get.

V is not perfect, and no game is, but V is the most entertaining game I own, and that's all I ask out of any game.

V is not perfect, and no game is, but V is the most entertaining game I own, and that's all I ask out of any game.

Considering there is tonnes of opportunities, like the ones I mentioned AND more, which they didn't take meaning only about 20-30% of the potential story and creativity wasn't included as opposed to most other game's 60-80%, I would say it did miss many opportunities.

Here's just some examples for each thing they could have done with just 10 things GTA V offered.

1: Film studio - explorable buildings and missions regarding a movie.

2: The hood - Gang wars and

3: Clucking Bell/Burger shot - delivery missions and/or interactive rivalry you could profit from.

4: Emergency services - many opportunities for missions (search and rescue, air cop, vigilante etc) and many random police chases or events (i.e: crime scene, steakout, ram raid etc)

5: Delivery missions -Like in GTA:SA, you can deliver goods in a truck from A to B and drug running.

6: Animals - You could buy a dog (not just Chop) and you could kill and skin animals for money.

7: Dock missions - Like in the mission "Scouting the Port" (mission 27).

8: More Assassination missions - speaks for itself. None of the NPCs (non-main characters) have any effect on anything if they die, so why not kill some for money?

9: Gambling - There is a Casino...

10: More interactive buildings - Like coffee shops you can hang with friends in and races you can bet on (like the in horse track) with or without friends.

There's more examples of what they could have done with what they offered.
