Investors want M$ to kill Xbox brand

Two influential Microsoft shareholders have been pushing the Redmond software giant to abandon what they view as non-essential product lines so that Microsoft can focus on its core strength: selling enterprise software to businesses

Some investors have suggested that Microsoft spin off its money-losing consumer products and focus solely on the enterprise. Even the Xbox deserves to go, Paul Ghaffari, the wealth manager for Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, said last year

Sigh* the console is a few months old and it sells well. No reason to ditch it already.

They want the whole Xbox and MS entertainment division gone - not just the Xbox One.

In a way I kind of agree with the shareholders(and this isn't a new thought from them). MS grew fast and wild, losing sight of it's core. They would probably do better if they just went back to providing the world's businesses with enterprise software.

Just like we don't have to worry about PlayStation with Sony's financial issues, I'm willing to bet we don't have to worry about the future of Xbox too...Nintendo is a whole other story. Ha

They need to get rid of the gaming division asap. It's not even a proper gaming console, they focused mostly on the entertainment given to the people in the living room and it STILL doesn't fully deliver what it's created to do. Rather let Sony and Nintendo be the big boys in the gaming industry, and considering Sony is doing amazingly well in the gaming business, it would make sense.

@FDR I would love to take a page from your book and respond by calling you retarded, an idiot, stupid, and all those other pleasant descriptors you spout.

But really...you must have at least half a brain to know that the console gaming world can not survive and treat the customers well if there isn't a fair amount of open competition.

This ^

Plus, There is no way MS is going to do this (If they're smart) and for obvious reasons,

Some of you need to learn the term "Free Market"

Shareholders are f*cking stupid.

The (probably incorrect) way I see it is

- Microsoft abandon Xbox

- Sony control gaming, with no competition, and suck as much money as they can with no consequences

- Sony get sh*tloads of money from this

- Sony expand into Microsoft's enterprise stuff, and then compete with MS there

Cycle starts all over again.

Yeah I know it can't survive, it's why I said Nintendo and Sony both would easily survive in the industry. I was just being a bit harsh with MS because their console is not on par with the PS4 in terms of games or power, something that is essential in that business. Again, MS wouldn't mind doing this because they are still rich f*cks just from their software business and whatnot. Do you not remember what happened in the announcement of the XB1? That left a bad taste in people's mouths.

That would be , if it happends , the best decision ever made by Microsoft , the video-games business is not their thing , and that Bing engine was a huge failure , they should focus on what they excel ... Sony's bankrupty and Xbox shutdown , if it happens again , gonna mark the beginning of a new Era

Competition is good for business. Anyone who says other wise is an idiot and need to take Economics 101 classes.

I don't care if you hate them or not, I don't want my favorites francises to die, and most importantly, thousands of people can lose their jobs because of that.

A wish the best for Nintendo, though. Third Party developers are really screwing over the Wii U fanbase.

Carlos Slim, the second richest person in the world, has around 70 billion dollars in part because his telecomunications company has about 90% of the market share. Competition isn't good for the business that has the strangle-hold on the market, but rather it's good for consumers. Otherwise you have a monopoly.

If MS can prove that this part of there business is profitable, or projected to be in the near future, then I wouldn't see any end in sight.

As much hate as I put on Xbox. I want it here. Nintendo isn't ever going to get away from the causal crowd. Xbox and PS make each system better.

Look at the pros and cons for PS3 and 360. Sadly Xbox One hardly has any pros compared to the PS4.

Depends who you ask. It may be shocking to you, but there's actually some people that prefer the Xbox One over the PS4.

Remember when the Xbox was meant to be the DirectX-box?

So much for that sh*t.

It essentially was meant to be like what the SteamBox/Machines are today, a PC in a box.

It was meant to be a standardization, it ended up being more proprietary than a knob into a minge.

(Those are sex words)

I bet the Sony fanboys are jacking off reading this thread without realizing what a bunch of stupid idiotic c*nts they are, if you have no competition, you become lazy, and that's what going to happen to your beloved Playstation .

No one here is saying Xbox will be killed, because its too big to be killed. However, you can't be that blind to not see what they done in the announcement and what the bad things they are still doing. M$ needs to step up their game BIG TIME, because PS4 is killing it from left, right and centre.

Nintendo should buy up Sega and they should make the Dreamcast 2.

So if the XB 1 isn't performing well. MS should kill the whole Xbox brand? How does that work out? The PS3 had a slow start just like the XB1 but that didn't mean it should have ended the PS brand. It eventually caught-up. Consoles always hit and miss at times. Just give them time.

I'm sure two to four years from now I'm not going to be able to purchase anything Xbox One anymore since they are going to abandon it.......................

Please, have some brains outside of the box a little bit. A next gen console is no different from recent history of console gaming. If you are a Microsoft or Sony company, when you release a new console, you invest for at least a ten year period. This is not a Dreamcast console. Now if everyone quit buying the console, yes it would die like the Dreamcast console did eventually.

Xbox One will get there. 1080p will be there. Yeah, it’s a little disappointing that they are not there yet. But it something that’s not going to make me lose sleep at night or anything. The same thing happened last gen consoles. History is so repeating itself, except the roles reversed.

Read: http://m.ign.com/articles/2014/02/10/sniper-elite-dev-explains-xbox-one-1080p-difficulties

PS3 went through the same spec. issues that Xbox One is having now. But it will pan out eventually.

I still want a PS4 though. I thought long and hard about it, I like the new sort of Netflix type of gaming they are getting. Getting to play some older games again. That will be cool. Twisted Metal anyone?

The big problem these companies face with the console market is that they start off each new generation by selling the consoles at a loss in hopes that they can build market share that will turn a profit a few years down the line. In order for that to work, they have to snag as many top selling exclusives as possible in addition to all the top selling cross platform titles, except that's not guaranteed to pan out, say like when a publisher trolls a console maker by agreeing to develop an exclusive title for a console and then never doing it.

Microsoft got into the console market back when their pockets were bottomless, the economic outlook wasn't imminently bleak and world domination seemed like a good notion to strive towards. But now days such obscene diversification doesn't make much sense when profits are few and far in between and the competition is tough as nails. And it's not just the Xbox either. They went after the ipod with the Zune and the ipad with the Surface, even throwing their flagship product, Windows, under the bus with Windows 8 in that latter attempt just to try to carve out a slice of the tablet market.

So yeah, I can totally see why investors would want them to abandon this money-losing endeavor. If it happens, I wouldn't be surprised to see some other company pick up the pieces and give it a shot. If Steve Jobs were still alive and MS was throwing in the towel, Apple would find a way to market the same basic console at a profit-turning, inflated price point that would have the masses pissing themselves uncontrollably with excitement.

I'm starting to think Steam may very well be the saving grace of this new generation.

After reading the news, it appears more about Nadella-Gates-Ballmer talks and not much about the future of the Xbox, etc, as mentioned.

It's quite expected from investors trying to put their desires forward to the newly appointed Head.

For now, it's just talks or speculative rather anything concrete to worry about.

In coming months, it'll get more clear about how Nadella approaches the game division.

And, I'm sure he'll address it, till then just Wait and watch!

Because nintendo is doing well and is a next generation console..

Like I said, one console would end console gaming. I prefer my xbox over ps4 anyday.

Ps3 started sh*tty with their price and hardware problems, xbox just had theirs. Everything will work out well for everyone.

Some people in this thread seem to be acting as if nobody would (or could) step in and replace Nintendo, Microsoft and/or Sony if they ever pulled out of the consoles market. What about the Steambox, NVIDIA Shield or Oculus Rift becoming more independent and developing their own standalone titles? Let's also not forget the slew of indie developers out there. The 'big three' may have the lion's share of the market, but there are plenty of other companies out there that have been trying to get their slice of the pie, so it's not as if some bottomless void would be created if Sony/MS/Nintendo pulled out or scaled back.

Also, smartphones/tablets are becoming much more game-oriented, especially in the eastern world. Specialized machines are becoming a thing of the past-- either adapt or be left behind.

EDIT: The Wii U may be doing poorly (by Nintendo's own admission) but the 3DS has sold over 30 million units.

Misbegotten cad

Well, the problem with XboxOne is that it's basically a gaming PC.

-and who buys those these days?

Most punters go for laptop or tablet, if they want to PC game, and a pure console, if they want console game. They will not buy something like XboxOne.

I love consoles because you can just plug in a game and start playing.

With PC this is not possible: Firstly, there is the annoying internet activation and installation procedure, that can take ages. Secondly, there are the constant updates that you MUST download and install before your PC lets you play the game.

And XboxOne, being basically a gaming PC, has these same problems. You never know if you can actually play a game when you start up your Xbox One.

So, let it fall, say I.
