I'm sick of 'steering' my character

People complaining about player mechanics i think are very justified. Its probably the most horrible mechanics i've ever seen.

I love GTA, but why is it so clunky? From walking, to running, falling and aiming. Everything in the game world is so detailed and awesome... Yet the actual player mechanics are really bad.

Its as if they barely put any effort into it. If you look at saints row, that games player mechanics are very smooth.

I think thats R*s biggest disapointment in most of their games. They are beyond everyone when it comes to to actual open worlds, but they can't seem to get a grasp on great player mechanics. Hence their freaky obsession with auto aim.

Strange thing is.. I find aiming and shooting easier and more smooth while driving a car..lol

like I said before it's because in gta your character actually walks

it's not some floating torso you can steer in any direction while legs just wobble underneath like most other games (saint's row)

you can dislike it based on your taste (or rather lack of XD) but saying sh*t like they barely put any effort into it is just downright stupid.

euphoria is without a doubt the most advanced physics based animation thinge-me-jig in games today.

only thing I don't get is the aiming, it's like a 1 on 1 translation from the input on your anolog stick

should be some springy-ness to it or something like in max payne 3

Character movement is at its worst when on top of something high, when there is a slightly steep slope, or when using some forms of cover.

When playing SR i never feel as if im fighting the players movements. Everything from dodging, rolling, jumping, melee and shooting are fairly smooth.

To me thats how it should be.. Its not just the walking..

Infact that actual walking is not so bad in GTA. Its just everything else..

Even how players aim.

Since the game is 3rd person I prefer having my characters turn and move fluidly... I think what you're suggesting breaks that.

Speaking of the Parkour in Assassin's Creed. I have seen GTA online videos of people doing Parkour. Wtf is this sh*t? I can climb lazily over a wall? I can barely jump over a small fence, in fact I am sure I can't even clear a small fence in this game. There is no mechanism to roll as you land from a great height to prevent injury(Only a set one from a certain height). These must be the most intensely sh*t and boring videos on the internet. I'm sure Honey Boo Boo Child would be a better watch than some grand dickheads doing GTA parkour.

LOL I'm going to look up some Gta Pakour videos now. I wanna see how much they suck for myself

I feel you OP. Ever tried to position your character on a ledge or a roof and end up falling off despite just GINGERLY tapping the stick and he walks about 3 steps around because he doesn't know how to just f*cking rotate or stop walking? rofl

I also hate that godawful run button bullsh*t and how they force you to walk if you're not holding X. In the III era you could just move the stick up and you'd jog and you could simultaneously move the camera with R3 around and have some awareness. But now since you're walking by default you gotta hold X to do that and it eliminates my ability to have situational awareness while jogging. If there's an enemy shooting at me and that auto-run bullsh*t glitches out and I still walk while he's pumping lead into me I'm basically target practice and if I do decide to run to evade the bullets or find some cover I can't f*cking keep track of him because I can't simultaneously hold X while moving R3 around.. stupeed ass bosh*t

I don't think it's that bad, it's acceptable but it's far from great. Especially climbing on to things and how your character trips over everything when trying to walk up the slope of a mountain. Even when it's not really that steep, your character can't walk up it. What I do really like is the blind fire option. I only use it against NPC's but it looks so cool. I also noticed the other day that if you poke your head out from cover a couple of seconds (just looking, not exposing your whole body), a reticule will appear that shows you where your blind fire will go.

But they really need to add a mechanic where your character can stand on a ledge and look over it without falling off. Like a soft lock that prevents you from walking off and an animation where your character peeks over the edge.

Oh and they really need to improve the cover system so that your character will be more inclined to go to cover that's between you and the enemy, rather than making a seemingly random guess on what side of the object you would like to take cover behind.

lol. Ya i agree.

Another thing that bugs me is the camera always fighting against me. When i drive and i want to look to the side it keeps trying to auto center. I have to keep taping shoot, but not shooting to keep the camera where i want.

When i drive and i look backwards it seems like it takes for ever to return to forward. It should twitch camera movements on this.

Its like i have no control over where i want to look.. lol..

I'm glad that the people who agree are giving detailed evidence and those who don't are mostly just insulting or dismissing.

this does suck

if I recall correctly it was done a lot better in gta 4 where the camera would instantly snap back to normal instead of this slow ass panning motion we have now

Did you also notice there's a delay before you look back? And a full shift of camera angle (with a new center focus) every time you aim. It's almost like they want to eliminate the advantages skill can provide.

Can you elaborate?

he is saying the character movement mechanics suck. Which they do. Because R* decided to incorporate a fully movable "camera view" as the right stick control input, the motion is necessarily borked.

There are plenty of 3rd person games that do not have such terrible movement mechanics, but they do not have this feature where you can move the camera 360* in all directions around your character, usually the right stick controls rotation/turning the character, not a camera AROUND the character, along with raising/lowering the sights and the left stick controls forward/backward movement and side-stepping. this is a WAY better setup.

SOCOM series, especially SOCOM 4 had excellent movement mechanics. Close quarters movement wasnt a total disaster and the cover system wasn't so error-prone either. I would prefer to not have the camera motion and be able to move my character like in SOCOM 4....they could incorporate the camera feature some other way, but with it attached to a primary controller input (right stick by default) it screws up the movement because you are now forced to do everything with the left stick. What hey should have done is made it a feature to be enabled like cinematic camera, which is utterly useless during gameplay unless you are a passenger....but too late now, they made the game his way and they already sold a bazillion copies, so no incentive to fix a turd when millions of people buy turds.

This guy wants better walking animation.....no surprise---- some guy in another thread wants to be able to eat spaghetti....yes, he wants to pick females up and take them to dinner after a deathmatch...im dead serious.

Spaghetti...Realistic looking stuff too, none of that fake stuff he said.

Eh-- I do find the on-foot mechanics to be a bit better looking than functioning. The whole convulsing in a seizure when you fall on the ground sometimes just shows that there are some things that were missed in this. Kinda like 90% of the game...

Three cheers for the tri-athletes tripping over themselves!

Yep it sucks ass, sometimes when you want to run a different direction they keep going in the same direction.. AND is the main reason fine-tuning your character's position on building ledges has forced many to enter free aim mode to avoid "accidentally" falling off. Happened in GTAIV alot and this is no different in terms of character control.

Here's the thing:

Saint's Row - legs move independently of body. Fluid control, but unrealistic.

GTA - legs move with respect to body. Realistic, but clunky.

Your pick.

Course you had to bring up Saints Row :rol:

And I agree, OP made one critcism and all the "Stop whining" assholes came out of the closet

Of course I did. Probably the best game for me to act all Trevor-like.
