Bump/Environment mapping are available in III/VC

Hey!
This post possibly brings already known things (since it was discovered first by DexX 5 years ago), but there was no much information on this subject presented.
Since III/VC/SA use vehicle reflections, RW's 'Material Effects Plugin' material extension is exist in these games.

This section holds such effects like bump-mapping, environment mapping (ZM and Kam's scripts can export this, but with limitations), dual-texturing and uv-animating (which is not available in III (and maybe in VC too)).
I've created article about this section here
And created some tool for GTA3 (which works in same way as 2dfx tool) (it possibly won't work with VC because of different RW version, but I can update it for VC too if anyone is interested).

So, do you think there's any reason for creating special tools for this thing?

Bump environment mapping, is this bump mapping applied to only the environment?

It's quite a coincidence I've came across this thread since I was looking at HLSL (The link to which I got from a post you made, DK (another coincidence)) implementation, because ultimately, I want to add a shader into Vice City, weather that be cel (or cell?) shading or bump mapping.

Is cel shading even possible, I was wondering if it could actually be done purely just to see if it is possible.

Bump and environment mapping are 2 different things...

Bump map creates an illusion of relief on surface, and environment map creates an illusion of reflection.

Adding you own shader for buildings (or other things you want to shade?) will be a bit hard if you just starting with this.

Since programmable pipeline replaces all T&L (transform&lighting) pipeline, you'll need also to care about such thing like lighting (not only sun diffuse&ambient lighting, but also night lights like lamps etc...).

Also, DX8 doesn't understand HLSL language, so you'll need to translate your shaders to ASM shading language (not a big problem at all).

They used bump in GTA3 on some object.

And R* used MatFx environment mapping in 3 and VC for vehicles. SA uses a bit advanced reflection mapping, but still it requires MatFx data.
